Lookout Mountain 50 | 50 MILES WITH ZERO TRAINING

Спорт

It's late Friday afternoon and Anya and I are headed 2 hours northeast to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the Lookout Mountain 18 and 50 Mile race packet pickup at the local Fleet Feet Store. Afterwards, we are headed to the Cloudland Canyon State Park campground, which is a short 20 minute drive from the start/finish staging area of the Lookout Mountain races at Covenant College atop Lookout Mountain in Georgia.
The race is put on by Randy and Kris Whorton with Wild Trails. It takes both 18 and 50 mile runners on a beautiful loop along an amazing bluff line overlooking Chattanooga and the surrounding area before dropping runners down to the river just before a final 3+ mile climb back to the finish area where the 18 milers get to call it a day while the 50 milers continue on for another 50K in the other direction to explore more trails that include the Lula Lake Land Trust among other highlights. In total, 50 milers climb about 9000 feet, but the terrain generally results in finishing times slower than expected for a race of that distance and elevation gain.
This is a definite southeastern gem put on by some amazing people. It is a must do race for the true ultra runner.

So i believe you mentioned you ran a 100 miler 5-6 prior to this race. I would like to think you were more fatigued than under trained for this race. I can’t imagine you losing that much endurance in that short time.

I actually tested positive for COVID 2 days later, so that is the reason. I run back to back ultras quite frequently and adjust my target times accordingly. This was definitely a case of being sick and not knowing and looking for a reason during the race of why I felt so bad.

@@ultrakraut well that’s both good and bad. But I’m looking forward to checking out your channel.

Started following after your Bob Graham Round video. Don't think I'll ever be fit enough for a Bob. Maybe a Joss Naylor Challenge when I'm 65 (if I'm still running). Well done on the Bob, and this!! Will you be heading back next year to collect your certificate?

I doubt I will be able to time a visit to the UK just for the certificate as much as I'd love to, BUT I will be headed over to run the 268 Mile Spine Race in June:-)

You're trying the friendly version 😂. Friend of mine (in his 60s) finished the Winter Spine in Jan 22. It affected his race performance for well over 6 months

@@marksammon yup, not really interested in winter ultras, yet:-) I do have a friend tackling it again in 2023.

I ran this race in December 2023. We had quite a few runners lost in the woods in the first 18 miles due to the fact that its direction was poorly marked. Some runners ran off course for over 4 miles. My group ran 7 miles off course. Some people got lucky and made it to an aid station before their cutoff time; some didn't make it and got disqualified. Between mile 18 and mile 50, once again, we had people get lost. A few runners and I were doing a 'group voting' to decide which direction we thought the marks were telling us to go. I even met a lady who ran this race last year and got lost this year. It was really that bad. I personally don't recommend anyone do this race. It was the worst marking I have ever experienced in my entire life.

I am sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. The course was well marked the two times I've run it previously.

Just load the GPX track on your watch next time. I had the same marking issues but just looked at my watch and had no issues.

Run this a couple years in a row. It’s always tough and idk why. It just gets daunting.
