I allways likes your explanations......and finally the truth answer is: "It's depends". I always try to find the "total" overview of what i "want to achieve" in combination of what i can and whant to invest. I love bigger prints, A1, A0......but for random, its not for an amateur. So than i go to a professional printing company.....total cost price is cheaper than.

Yes, big printing is not a cheap hobby, but I come across quite a few people with a different view of 'expensive' to myself. One reason I do the bespoke one to one training ;-)

Yes, i completely agree. Your a real craftsman and it's makes me glad you're willing to help people and teaching them. In my past, I went to a school for advertising and presentation techniques. Most of the teachers came from business and could teach from their own experiences. Its all about experiences, sharing the trails and errors.

As a new Canon Pro-2600 user, I think you nailed things pretty well. The Pro-2600, for a 24" printer, is a pretty good value - if you're just talking about the printer itself. I added the RU-23 multifunction 2nd roller - and that added almost $1,000 US, and to upgrade my ImagePrint RIP to the new version (that added support for this printer) and to the 24" version, added another $700 or so... so I'm not feeling the bargain at the moment. Having said that, I'm very happy with the Pro-2600. Their new ink set is advertised as having deeper blacks, and I see that in darker areas and in the overall contrast and "richness" (a subjective term, but I can't think of another) of the images. The paper handling is nicely automated, especially with the 2nd roller attached. And there is a light that comes on inside the printer when it's printing so you can see how it's going. The lights that help you monitor the ink levels from across the room are helpful. Interestingly, when comparing prints from my 15 yr old Epson 4880, I think the prints from the older machine actually hold up well, but the depth of the blacks, the overall contrast and richness of the prints on the new one is significantly better (assuming the files are processed well and the appropriate profiles are used for papers - my RIP handles that, but others would want to be careful about using profiles). Thanks again for your wisdom in all of this - can't wait for you to get a Pro-2600 in to test it!

Hi - one of the reasons I bought into the Canon system is that they don’t seem to have the same level of problems with this as my old Epson did. Canon also made some changes to the ink system to further prevent clogs. I haven’t had any issues thus far on the Canon Pro-2600.

I have come around to the pleasures of small prints. Just for the aesthetics, in my work, a personal thing.

Fair enough - they are certainly easier to handle, and suit some subjects

Though it technically doesn’t qualify as such, I feel as if my new Epson P900 is a “pro level” printer…at least to me, ha. Early test print results have been particulalrly satisfying. Also, it certainly didn’t hurt that I got a manufacturer’s rebate (from Epson Canada) equal to about 15% of purchase. Thanks for your always sound analysis.

i love your videos Keith thank you so much for sharing all this. i been wanting to make my own prints and i do like the size of 24". There will be times i will be printing a lot but there are times that i don't think i will have much to print. in that case do you do think getting the 2600 is a bad idea? i am based in US so can get the rebate.

An excellent printer, I've not had the chance to test it yet. Just make sure you print something on it [a nozzle check on plain paper] every week or two

Hi Keith - really enjoying your wee informative dissertations. Do you think we have reached PEAK PRINT? surely if a company released a new model and said it was better than the last, would our feeble eyeballs really see any improvement?

Thanks - In some respects we passed that a few years ago. In others, there are plenty of usability and reliability issues I could raise. If I don't write on the back/front of test prints, I often could not tell you which printer I'd used

I'm having a heck of a time selecting a pro-level printer; please advise. I have had a lot of interest from food followers in buying prints, and that's a good thing. I have tried local and the typical big business printers and have not been satisfied. I will print landscapes, so I need a roll printer that's capable of fine canvas. But I spend time out and about doing the job of Photography...sometimes, not often, maybe once or twice a year for extended periods of 4-6 weeks. I don't understand why printer manufacturers can't design a printer that could be cleaned, flushed, and prepared for those extended times away (too much-wasted ink, I suppose). So it appears an Epson 5370 would be my best solution...Your thoughts.

Yes, it's better suited for such intermittent use. Most large printers are designed for production use, i.e. prints on most days or at least weekly - adding in 'low-use' features would complicate things, but I'd like to see timers built into printers so that I could tell the printer to print a nozzle check every week or so. The back up to that [what I use] is to leave the printer asleep, but not off, and remotely access our network, so I can run a remote print job [a nozzle check on plain paper is fine]. This could also be run from a script on a local server for example.

Do you think firmware is the better path Regarding the Canon PRO-1000s’ age. I’m guessing there is little reason to release an upgraded model. Do you think the future upgrades will be ink formulations?

There are some sound mechanical reasons for a new PRO-1000 [repairability for one]. Until we got the revised inks for the pro-2/4600, I thought they'd stick with the 1000, now, given the other new printers, I think there is enough of a change to see it as a new printer. So, the new inks will likely be the driver for change - as to whether we see roll support? Well many would appreciate it, but Canon has proved to be extremely conservative in many aspects of new printer design ;-)
