Looking At Water From Inside of Two Geodes Under a Microscope: Secrets of the Forbidden Gushers
Ғылым және технология
I know that the quality of this isn't where I want it at all but I also know that you all just REALLY WANT TO KNOW. So here we go. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment. As to how long the water was trapped inside I don't have that specific information however these geodes are estimated to have begun forming 330 million years ago as the result of a Mississippian aged extinction event. The water's PH level was between 7 and 8. Thank you to everybody who watches and a special thanks for Professor Locmelis and Ms. Clark. Another special thanks to Gary Ewings who provided the most recent two geodes.

A friends dad was a geologist and had a small lapidary workshop in their basement. He would tumble some rocks for weeks to polish them. Also had a large diamond blade wet saw which could cut up to 5" thickness. One geode's edge was sliced off just shy of the cavity and the fluid inside could be seen through the remaining thin crystalline wall .. very rare to make such a close cut and not leak.

Thank you so much for doing this! While living organisms might have been cool I'm honestly much more interested and fascinated in those magnified slides and how the microscope was able to pick out different minerals via refraction of light. I was riveted to the screen through this whole thing lol. The little globules and pieces left over from the formation of the crystals were cool to see, like you were looking back in time to the birth of this geode and the cleavage marks on the fragments being so easy to see when you know just how tiny these granules of crystal really are is so neat. The professor and phd student were really interesting to listen to, as well! 💗
Biologist here. Your channel is quite interesting, and your videos are fascinating. Talking about microorganisms, I didn't see any field of view lower than 250nm. There are viruses smaller than 10nm, so viral presence might be possible. Of course, that raises other questions, including if there's any chance a microorganism would be able to survive in those conditions (temperature, pressure, etc.). I found a very interesting article titled "Survival of viruses in water", by A. Pinon, which I really enjoyed. But there's no conclusive answer to those questions, specially since you were not able to find signs of microbial activity. Some other articles that are very interesting are: -Endolithic microbes of rocks, their community, function and survival strategies, by Sajjad, et al., 2022. -Microbiology Resource of the Month: Rock-Inhabiting Microbes, by A. Hagen, 2021.
Some of those slides would make amazing art pieces. They are stunning! Especially ones where the light is manipulated. Seriously, blow it up on a canvas or even just a decent sized print, I would buy one. I actually took screenshots of a couple to use a the pic on my lock screen. Just a thought because I haven't seen anything like it before. This isn't a demand, but a suggestion. I don't know if you'll read this, probably too long but I don't know how to be more concise, sorry. Aside from the entertaining educational aspects of this video, I read through a bunch of the comments and I wish I could just give you a hug. Platonic, not trying to step on your lady friend's toes ..or my man's lol. It's obvious hiw much you care about the content you create, those of us watching, and your passion for this field. When you care that much, it's impossible not to take the negative stuff to heart. That's not a choice, it's how most of us are wired. It takes 3 positive comments to counter-not overtake, but equal to-one negative. And you add pressure by wanting to do a good job. Like so many others have said, you've got this. Of course you're going to make mistakes. Of course you'll never please everyone. But most of the people watching and subscribing are because we want to. A video or short got our attention and we liked what we saw. That proves you're on the right track. Your editing and stuff will improve over time. You know all this, just trust it. Could you explain how confined water inside of a geoed don't have any bacteria? Hi, could you also analyse this water chemically? I thought that's what the video would be about mostly. I think it would be interesting to compare its pH and the trace mineral(?)/ion composition to normal water (e.g. typical groundwater, river water, tap water etc.). It would also answer your question about whether microorganisms can or do live there. Microorganisms obviously need a source of energy, so unless there isn't some compound for them to break down, finding living ones will be difficult. Apart from that, all living beings contain some of the same elements. Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and very importantly nitrogen, which is in the bases of DNA and RNA. I'm sure that microorganisms would leave a detectable signature of these elements in the water. Personally, I'm quite certain that there aren't any living microorganisms in geodes, unless the water is in contact with the outside world, but I suppose there could be bacterial endospores in there (=a dormant state of certain bacterial genera), depending on the circumstances of how the water got into the geode. Scientists found endospores that were I think 250 million years old in salt crystals, and they managed to bring them back to life! [Edit: I looked it up, and yes, it was indeed 250 million years. The paper was published in Nature in October 2000.] Endospores are potentially immortal when they're in the right conditions. So this is the only option in my opinion/according to my knowledge, which mostly comes from my biology bachelor's degree. Edit: This was simply a suggestion. I'm not a native, so I don't know whether the way I phrased it was rude or too demanding. In any way, I didn't mean it like that.

Just consider it when you're actually in a good place mentally. If you haven't already, try to get professional help or at least someone to talk to in the beginning. I wish you a thorough recovery and a lot of relaxation!

@@solar0wind I'm just exhausted and had to curb my initial reaction. Because it would be interesting and it's something I wanted to do...it just didn't happen. I'll be fine. It's just been a whole month plus of being on "high alert". Thank you for the kind words and I'll see if I can annoy a chemist into doing an analysis without destroying my wallet 😅.
That was so cool! I have a mini pocket microscope and a uv light that I go rock hounding with.. have quite a bit of specimens too.. tumbled my first batch of rocks last summer and that was a looooong process.. im actually really impressed with how in depth this video is. Well done!

Thank you
Thank you for all your time, expense & effort into bringing this information to us. For some reason, I thought you were going to show the analysis of the geode's fluid inside .. I thought that's why the scientist captured the liquid. Ps. Please take Skylar Gardener's advice .. better to say, 'Thanks for bearing with me .. now let's move forward' .. since your so not owe us anything. 😉 Keep up the great work, my friend!

I appreciate that - though when I go through all of these comments it's hard not to feel the pressure of people's expectations. And a great many people seem to think I do owe them something. As for chemical composition I still have the water and maybe some day I'll gather the cash to pay somebody to do that but for now it's just not feasible for me. Thank you though for your time, and have a lovely day.

Thanks...I was admittedly super stressed when making that and that was part of why I was saying all of that. At the time I had tens of thousands of comments and people every day asking about the water and it was a level of pressure I was not familiar with or had experienced. So thank you for watching and the kind words.

At least when it started forming. The water could have become trapped any time between then and now :)
Omg the music at the end with slides... wow! Really feeling it then commercials just happened 😕. 😆

Knew this was Missouri based. Grew up finding these all over the state
Find someone who talks to you like this man talks to geodes
You seem really anxious. I can tell from your comments. Reminds me of how I’d react if I had KZread videos lol. The videos are great though, super glad I found them! Very interesting:)
I wonder what would/could happen if you drank it?

Just out of curiosity where are you located just wondering can these be found anywhere or is it only in certain climates? Like where I live in Newhampshire everything is mostly granite

I'm in Missouri. They form in a lot of different localities but not everywhere. If you're curious I definitely recommend finding the nearest gem and mineral club. They'll have a better bead on the localities in your area.
So if I, knowing absolutely nothing and owning zero equipment, wanted to take my kids to go look for geodes and crack them open, where would I start? How do you even know a rock is a geode?

You're very welcome - and...yeah if I have learned anything it's that no matter what I do there will always be somebody upset. I immediately started getting "What is the chemical composition of the water", "take it to a bio lab", "etc etc etc". It is what it is and people absolutely expected life in there. Or a cancer cure. Or magic. People expected and still expect a lot!
I've seen a few Sci-Fi movies that start with cracking weird rocks open
