Almost 5 year old tech and you finally give credit where credit is due. I have this on my 2017 f150 and it's great. For all you "I know how to tow" guys, I tow for a living worth a super duty. But, my F150 has a canopy on it. When backing up a long 100 yard boat ramp with a bass boat trailer, you can't see it. I watch guys try for ten minutes to get down the ramp. It's super easy with this system.

I just test drove one, real world... You have to really be heavy handed to get that piece to flex like that. Knowing how excited Andre gets I am certain there was definitely an unnecessary amount of force applied. You literally just have to lightly touch the button for a split second and the thing does the rest. Could the interior use a little love? Yes, but the GMC/Chevy trucks are the same... The Ram isn’t really any better, it just seems to hide its flaws a little better that Ford and GM, that way you as a consumer “feel” like you are getting upscale, when really you’re getting a facade. I imagine with the amount of money Ford, GM, and Fiat spend on developing these trucks to handle the workload they do doesn’t leave much margin for real life ritzy interiors. If any of these trucks had fancier interiors with fancier materials you’d pay $120k for a Big Horn, King Ranch or Denali.

@Ptguy0618 you couldn't find a panel that flexes on a Bentley, Rolls ... maybe an Aston ... you could find a piece that falls of a McLaren or a Land Rover ... : ) But crap quality does justify crap quality ... and I'm no shill for Fiat, but check the cabin of the 2019 new RAM, it wouldn't be silly to compare it to a luxury car in terms of design and quality. I had to rent one recently and aside from crap mpg, it really had me looking at my old Ford and thinking about what I get next being a year old 2020 RAM 1500 diesel ... then again all the carmakers are offering huge discounting on new models because they're all bleeding money.

It’s more of a problem with the RV industry as the baby boomers age and aren’t the largest buying segment anymore. I’ve notice a lot more lightweight travel trailers on the lots lately with low prices and advertised with “can tow with SUV”

@@anthonyarcher7268 I have first generation of the system in a 2016 model year. That system relies on a sticker that you would attach to an a-frame of the trailer. If the computer can't recognize it for some reason (during rain, bad light reflection, etc) you will have to back it up manually. From my personal experience the tech is good, bu you better be ready when it fails. It looks like Ford has improved the system and it has a dedicated 12-pin connector, but still what if that cable goes bad? When it comes to cameras I think that having one on the back of the trailer is most useful.

Another GREAT video! The Ford rep. stated that the lower first gear helps to get heavier loads moving. He missed what's even more important. The 10 speed's first gear offers 16% more torque (4.61 vs. 3.97). That's fine. HOWEVER, the 10 speed's reverse offers a whopping 50% more torque. (4.69 vs. 3.128). If you're backing even a relatively light (~4,000 lbs) load uphill, trust me, you will appreciate a lower reverse. With my 6 speed, I find it unpleasant that such a powerful engine has to keep the RPM up in order to sufficiently engage the torque converter just because reverse gear ratio is so tall as to be half way between the 6 speed's 1st and 2nd gear. What were they thinking? Was anyone really planning to go 40mph - BACKWARDS?

@@brightymcbrightface Your reply is a bit confusing: 1) The Ford has a 4x4 low range. (Still, reverse should have a lower gear ratio) 2) The Ford offers a locking rear differential in their FX4 package. The front wheels also have a hub lock knob. However, unlike the Ram 'PowerWagon', Ford does not offer a locking front differential (Ford should) 3) Both the horsepower and torque a VASTLY improved over the last 15 years - PERIOD. 4) My 2017 F-350, 6.7 Diesel, 4x4, crew cab, long bed achieved 21.0 MPG on a 250+ mile loop, which included a mountainous 7000 foot ascent/descent. It also achieved 20.0 MPG on a 900 mile trip That is pretty frickin' awesome. Note1: Both were with the truck unladen and averaging ~60MPH Note2: At a sustained 85mph cruise in Utah (partially laden), mileage dropped into the low 14's - proof that driving a huge brick at speed hurts. 5) I've yet to experience service costs, but I bought an extended warranty should I need it. It also covers a dozen routine service (oil change, etc.) over a 6 year period. 6) I've owned 3/4 ton Chevy pickups since ~1972. In relative terms, this truck is very comfortable and quiet, and I only have the XLT trim with no options. As I can attest from a '69 C20, while coil springs would be more comfortable, they don't handle loads as well. I'll gladly stick with leafs. 7) Steering - you got me there. The biggest fault with it is the turn radius inherent in a 176" wheelbase, compounded by the wheels not being able to turn at as sharp an angle as Chevys. Consequently, it turns like a school bus, and I have to drive it that way

@@gregparrott for some reason your reply is truncated in youtube, but showed up as a notification ... technology ... anywho ... I don't disagree with your points although I would clarify that I'm not knocking the Ford or advocating GM or RAM (they each have their strengths and weaknesses ... I sort of wish I could put a good old Cummins in a new RAM for the cabin and air bag suspension if I just really had to spend $60-80K on a tow vehicle ... : ) Gregory Parrott 11 minutes ago @Brighty McBrightface Your reply is a bit confusing: 1) The Ford has a 4x4 low range. (Still, reverse should have a lower gear ratio) right, but the electronics insist upon locking the center diff which causes axle binding when you want full steering lock back-n-fill (all of my points boil down to "tow vehicles are half baked today because they don't have simple design/function/utility that we've known about since last century.) 2) The Ford offers a locking rear differential in their FX4 package. The front wheels also have a hub lock knob. However, unlike the Ram 'PowerWagon', Ford does not offer a locking front differential (Ford should) The Power Wagon is awesome but showing its age ... also significantly less haul and tow capability (for no apparent reason, since the Ford Tremor is set up for off-road but still has F350 specs. 3) Both the horsepower and torque a VASTLY improved over the last 15 years - PERIOD. True, but to what advantage? Higher operating and service costs, weaknesses in the emissions gear and maybe 10 seconds quicker accelerating up an on-ramp 4) My 2017 F-350, 6.7 Diesel, 4x4, crew cab, long bed achieved 21.0 MPG on a 250+ mile loop, which included a mountainous 7000 foot ascent/descent. It also achieved 20.0 MPG on a 900 mile trip That is pretty frickin' awesome. Note1: Both were with the truck unladen and averaging ~60MPH Note2: At a sustained 85mph cruise in Utah (partially laden), mileage dropped into the low 14's - proof that driving a huge brick at speed hurts. ... my old 400hp diesel gets 15 mpg towing (never seen 20 mpg except downhill ... : ) with a 44 gallon tank, I've got a full day of driving and very tired ... seat ... by the time I refuel ... and the spare $50K in my pocket negates any mpg operating cost advantage. 5) I've yet to experience service costs, but I bought an extended warranty should I need it. It also covers a dozen routine service (oil change, etc.) over a 6 year period. Just wait till the EGR fails or the turbo starts to coke up and whine and lag or the high pressure fuel pump quits, etc. Diesel maintenance is key to durability and reliability, but the known defects in modern (DEF) diesels brings known problems (just google "bullet proof" diesel ... : ) 6) I've owned 3/4 ton Chevy pickups since ~1972. In relative terms, this truck is very comfortable and quiet, and I only have the XLT trim with no options. As I can attest from a '69 C20, while coil springs would be more comfortable, they don't handle loads as well. I'll gladly stick with leafs. Coils and airbags with decent suspension links will haul and tow like wagon springs and ride comfortably without carrying 5 bags of cement in the bed just so the rear doesn't dance around under brakes or a little standing water. 7) Steering - you got me there. The biggest fault with it is the turn radius inherent in a 176" wheelbase, compounded by the wheels not being able to turn at as sharp an angle as Chevys. Consequently, it turns like a school bus, and I have to drive it that way When I winch someone back on the trail, it's usually a turning radius problem that leads them to put a tire where they wouldn't if they could have made a sharper turn or better three-point turn. Again, Ford can do this "right" but for some reason they choose not to (for example the E350 has great axle articulation and steering angle, but the F350 doesn't ... I guess it's a matter of parts and costs and load ratings etc. but it can be done, they just choose to do a half assed job.) I can't quite believe that 10 years ago GM had four wheel steering and hybrid full size vehicles and now they're just getting around to a diesel in a suburban ... if that burb had 4WS and hybrid, I'd be willing to pay $80K and drive the thing 200K miles and keep it ten years. But these 2020 models from Ford and GM aren't much improved over your 2017 ... at least RAM has a cabin that looks and feels like a luxury $50K vehicle ... but still not good mpg, not a plug-in hybrid, not the best diesels (anymore) and the GM "small" diesel is 1mpg better and accelerates a lot quicker in the TFL comparison ... all three are doing a half-assed job but asking top dollar. No wonder RAM is selling better than GM, but equally well no wonder they're all losing sales in everything except pickups and struggling for business.

@@brightymcbrightface I recently clicked on KZread's notification stating that it is transitioning to a newer format. I 'OK'd the transition to occur. I've since seen a few bugs. I guess what you encountered is another one. The locking center diff. is an interesting issue. I have an AWD car with an open center diff. (i.e. transfer case) and open front & rear differentials - It absolutely sucks. I've determined that its 'AWD' designation actually stands for 'Any Wheel Drive', because if ANY wheel loses traction, you're not going anywhere. Given that experience, having a locked center diff is superior. Ideally, one might offer selectable 'Open/Locked', and/or as with some aftermarket transfer cases, allow you to also select RWD, FWD, 4Wd. I've seen a lot of comments about DEF problems. Admittedly though, I know nothing about the specific issues. Is DEF fluid injected PRIOR to the air entering the turbo? Or, is it injected downstream of the turbo, in which case it should not contribute to coking. TFL has a video in which they state that the Tremor actually has somewhat lower specs than the F-350 The E350 is 2wd, while the F350 is 4wd. While I agree the F350 should cut better steering angles, I believe that CV joint wear and loading at high steering angles was a factor in them choosing to limit steering angles. You mention 15mpg towing. I ask - with how much weight? I can get that if I keep the trailer weight down to ~5k pounds and it is not a tall, enclosed cargo container. With the exception of Ram, I believe airbags are only offered as an aftermarket installation (a pity, as it should be a factory installed option) I've ordered Airlift's 5000 lb kit. GM's 4 wheel steering (called 'Quadrasteer') was really trick. I have to assume that problems and/or poor customer demand caused it to have a short life (2002 through 2005) Ford's new 7.3 Gas engine may wind up being the pragmatic alternative to Diesels - lower cost premium, lower maintenance costs, and weight savings that result in improved payload capacities. Yes, these trucks are monstrously expensive. But all vehicle costs have skyrocketed. A '67 SS Camaro originally cost about $3000. A performance model Camaro today costs well over 10X that. If you elect to buy the high end model, it costs more than 20X. The moral is to save $$$$, keep what you have as long as possible.

I can't believe so many people rag on this technology and the people that use it. I have been backing up trailers for 50 years starting with the farm tractor (Ford 8N) and hay trailers at age 8. I know how it is done, but I use the trailer assist in my 2020 F250 with the 7.3 gasser about half the time. It adds some convenience particularly once you have the trailer pointed in the direction you want, just let go of the knob and the truck follows the trailer. I have the Ultimate camera package and I think it is great too. As far as cost, you can get a decently equipped F250 for a lot less than the trucks being demonstrated. It got mine for $44k. I don't need leather, power seats(mine gets set once and never moves), and all the other high end stuff. If you don't feel like you want it then don't get a package that has it. The choice is yours.

I live about 6 miles from the dealership, before towing that huge trailer the longest trailer I towed was a 16 ft so I had no experience towing something that long, but I got it home in one piece, and I backed it up into my trailer parking spot on the first try. the next time I took it out, I backed the truck and hooked it up by myself, I had no issues, and I did not used the back up assist, maybe I'll try it next time. it is scary the first time you tow something that large, but once you drive with it for a little bit you get more and more comfortable.

Also I am looking at the same length and weight of trailer in the video (Reflection) weighing 12k unlaiden. Having a good camera on the rear is 90 percent of safe backing. Personally I am experienced at backing and don't want an expensive option to do do it for me. Now, if that thing can back it at night, I would gladly take it. But from what I saw, you still need camera video to use it, and that's not going to be much good at night. The diesels are already over-tec'd with all the DEF junk. I am still liking my older diesel with no cats, dpf, def, etc. It's easy enuf to update older trucks with NAV, CAMERAS, BT, now so a lot of those are not needed OE.

  • @daltonbrink9924

    @daltonbrink9924

No. Not even close. An exhaust brake is nothing more than a butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe. A true engine brake lifts the exhaust valves at the top of the compression stroke to release the air in the cylinder. This makes the piston pull a vacuum during the power stroke, slowing the engine down, and there by slowing the truck down.

A great video that explains a lot and has a ton of info. The payload capacity that you quoted for this truck was 4,189 lbs. However I just got my new 2021 F-350 diesel crew cab 4x4 with 6ft 9inch bed. I have an 11,500 lbs. GVWR. My weight sticker for cargo carrying capacity and tire info says I only have 3,481 lbs. payload capacity. I contacted the dealer where I ordered it (for my 40 ft fifth wheel RV) and they said it was absolutely wrong and we both contacted Ford and the truck specialist agreed and said the GVWR sticker is correct at 11,500 lbs, but they made a mistake on the payload capacity sticker! It should be 4260 lbs payload capacity! They admitted it but after over a week of back and forth with Ford, the result was they won't correct it and send me a new correct sticker! If there is anyone that you can put me in touch with to help, please respond asap. I can't pull my fifth wheel with this sticker. I know this is usual but I am at the end of my rope. I just ordered an F-350 6.7 CCLB SRW Lariat pretty much loaded after extensive research regarding payload capacity. It eventually became very clear to me how to order to truck for maximum payload in a loaded super duty. You MUST order a long bed (not what I wanted) and do not select one of the GVWR package options available, i.e. 10,000 lb, 11,500 lb, etc. because those are often derated options. An F-350 Short bed SRW will have a maximum GVWR of 11,500 lbs regardless, but the long bed will come with a GVWR of 12,400 lbs. unless you order the 10,000 or 11,500 lb GVWR derated package option. Ford will not send different payload door stickers once a derated package has been assigned to the VIN. Honestly, Ford could do customers a huge service by tabulating expected payload rating as you chose options while building and order. They could also do a better job of eliminating all the confusion around payload questions. No reason someone should not know what the payload sticker will say (or close to it) when a custom order is placed. At this point, it is a near mystery. All I know is that my 12,400 GVWR F-350 SRW truck order should have a payload somewhere between 3,800 and 4,100 lbs as configured. An XL version of the same truck would be around 4,600 lbs without a 5th wheel prep on it from factory.

Hill hold could get you in trouble once you become complacent with it. It gets turned off or you get in a truck without it and you roll back into someone.

The tech is a good thing in most cases, but it's also got to be the highest margin item on the truck. Ford just loves to bend you over for every little upgrade. If you can avoid ticking every box you can get a decent truck at a good price. $10,000 for the diesel really seems like Ford just taking the piss, though.

GM and Ram both charge almost $10,000 for their diesel engine as well. That's just where the market is.

@@supadoopa926 I suppose that's an opportunity for some additional competitors in the market then. The big three seem to be operating like an oligopoly, at least in the light truck market. They're clearly happy with that because trucks are highly profitable so they don't compete on price. Toyota and Nissan haven't really pushed them. Maybe the Koreans could.

interesting point. I'd forgotten GM has that "see through" trailer mode which is pretty cool (for blind spots) but still has all the same problems with this Ford -- doesn't work in darkness or rain, should be wireless cameras, etc.
