Very good reasoning! This should be known by everybody for keeping healthy feet. I myself had to undergo surgery for my left foot and might also need to go for the right one after the first one has healed completely. The issues causing my foot issues: too short shoes and too narrow - with high heals on top. Wow, what a foot destruction I was causing by not knowing the truth and following foolish advice from my silly mother who did not know any better but introducing my feet to higher heals at my age only 14 years old. These days with the majority of shoe producers delivering damage causing products to humans foot health. If I had known much earlier in life what I do learn now, I could have prevented much pain and restrain from doing sports involving running and jumping plus I would not have needed surgery!

I came up with a very simple solution to my toe problem, which had developed over 30 years of walking and running in ordinary running shoes. I cut the top of the toe box out of my running shoes so that the toes had room to rove, and that ended the pain. Looks pretty funny but with color coordinated socks it’s not that noticeable. Thanks for confirming that my result was more than a placebo effect.

I wish the natural toe box movement would catch on with some sports other than running. I play racquetball and haven't been able to find "correct" shoes that also are designed for bursty, high impact, lateral court movements and with rubber soles for traction on wood. So I stick with my squash Salmings, the minor bunions, and big toe calluses. Very sad.

Which running shoes do You recommend ? I've been using ASICs shoes- only one model that really fitted me, and now I started to have problems up to the point that I can barely walk. I didn't even think about my shoes being the cause of my pain until I've watched this video!

Wonderful. I have learned a lot. I do wonder if you can cause heal pain by having Plantar Fasciitis and walking different. I now have heal pain with the Fasciitis. I don't want surgery. I just went through trigger thumb release surgery. I tried to correct that with cortisone but didn't work. I would like to succeed in correcting this without surgery.

I'm 21½ years old. I started having pain and discomfort, caused by my athletic shoes. My parents aren't believing me, that I have bunions. I made an appointment with a podiatrist, and she told me to go to make me custom orthotics "arch support" insoles. But I don't personally think I need them necessarily, because I don't have a flat feet. So why sould I spent my money for something that could not work for me? I also have two calluses on the left foot. One on the right side of the forefoot, and one on the big toe. And for over a year (in every month) I'm doing a cryo-therapy with liquid nitrogen sprayer. But still the problem doesn't solved away. However I started walking on a sandy beach and with small rocks to see if it works as a natural scrub for my feet. Kinda works a little. Most shoe sellers on the market, are claiming that "The shoes will breaking in". But I realized, it's the exact opposite. My toes toke shape of the shoe, instead of being natural for over a decade or more. Which means, the shoes didn't break at all!

Callusing is almost always due to friction, rubbing. Not all callusing is bad, it is your body's response to protect certain areas. If it is uncomfortable or painful use a lava rock after the shower. It can take time for your body to know that it doesn't need to make those calluses. I would recommend checking your shoe size with the shoe liner test, the callusing may be a result of too narrow/small shoes. If you don't remove the narrow shoe the callusing will continue to form.

My dad was an old school podiatrist, helped failed foot surgery patients conservatively. He designed a variety of orthotics for my severe pes planus since age 7. Then in the 1970s, the Langer rear post orthotic made the most difference. Now at 77, I just use PowerStep Pinnacle Maxx (With rear post) keeping a pair in each set of shoes I rotate through with good results. These wide toed shoes seem to have no support; what is suggested to get a wide toes shoe with support or orthotic capability?

Hi there, A common solution our customers/patients have found is combing a wide toe box shoe with some variation of an orthotic. It is always best to visit with your provider, please use caution with any transition to your body!

I'm in my 60s. Shoes have changed a lot over time. Not that they were great, but except for boots, soles were thin. There were plenty of flats. Now, soles are thick, "flats" have 1" or more heels, and toe spring? I was disabled for years and when I started walking and shoe shopping again, I bought a pair with toe spring, I thought it would kill me. I'm now wearing minimalist shoes, and save for the toe box (which I had before with Earth Shoes), the soles are the same or more than what I wore in the 70s and into the 90s.

They are! The only reason we do not fully endorse them is that they are a little too stiff and often feature more arch support/heel cushioning than we would generally recommend. They're a great transitional option nonetheless!
