Longsword Semi-final with Ville Välimäki

Спорт

I once again barely made it to the semifinals of Sofia CrossSwords. This time I fenced the other fencer that joined us from Finland - Ville Välimäki (EHMS).
While I am not especially happy with my performance, I am glad I had the opportunity to play with him and hope to be able to do it better in the future.
Ville is currently placed 16th in HEMA Ratings for Steel Longsword.

Thank you. Yes, he is very good and super technical and very experienced in competitions. At the exchange at 3:26, during the close in part my glove stuck at his sword and the glove opened up. It was fixable but I didn't want to bother with them so I just changed to another pair instead of that. I was pretty sure it wouldn't make that much of a difference that I would be able to win my match.

Just wondering, what length do you use for your lichty/concept in this tournament?

I am using the “standard” 135 cm Concept for this tournament and all others I was in 2023. It is however too long for me. It helps in some plays but I consider moving back to the shorty length (which I use for everyday practice).

After watching at 0.25 speed, it looks to me at 1:22 you actually blocked the thrust to your neck, but your opponents blade is sufficiently flexible that it bend over your quillions and the point touches, then sticks because of Ville's forward momentum. Very interesting!

Hm, don’t know. Haven’t analysed it in such detail as it looked pretty obvious. Will check it out, thanks

Well fought, your opponent was a very hard profile to approach it seems

Thanks. I was honestly at a loss of how to approach it. Neither the tactical nor technical choices and changes I used made much of a difference. I can now see openings and opportunities I could have used, but getting them is another thing. He is just significantly better than me (for now ;)
