    Great video Dream. For me the big deciding factor is string alignment. I’ve ruined plenty of recurves by trying them on staves with too much twist

    What i love about the longbow design is that it‘s amazingly simple and very old. It‘s been used since the stone age. Also you don‘t waste as much bow wood (there can be made two narrow longbows from a wide Møllegabet stave).

    In my experience revcurved bows seem to offer a much higer draw length compared to long bows. Most trad long bows seem to be around the 29" draw which makes no sense to me, because most of the asiatic recurves i have are below 53" in lenght and they all offer a 33" draw length. Go figure....

    Longbows are easier to make than recurves but I think every bow has a purpose. Why else would the ancients make them the way they did? Man it would be cool to talk to some of them and actually see how they did all this!

    Yeah. Long/flatbows are generally the bang for the buck bows of the family. They may not be very powerful, they may not be very fast but they are very cost effective and easy to make. It is quite literally a stick and string and although it's only half as efficient as a Manchurian bow you still do not want to get hit by one of those. Half a nuclear bomb is still half a nuclear bomb hehe. Recurved bows, although better in every other sense, are extremely expensive and time consuming to make. Composite bows require a master bowyer and they can take up to two years just to dry and be ready to shoot. (Also I'd like to give a shout out to reflex bows! Although they too are composite bows and weaker than recurves, they are much easier to maintain. Recurve bows need twist correction from time to time, more or less depending on how aggressive the design is. Reflex bows are self correcting and require very little maintenance which makes them perfect for long expeditions such as the expansive campaigns done by the Mongolians. That's right! Mongols used reflex bows not recurves. Most Mongolian style bows today are actually late Mongolian bows, they adapted the Manchurian design in the very recent years. But their early bows used during Ghengis Khan's reign were reflex bows, the Chinese actually borrowed their design because they were unable to keep up with the fast moving troops of the Mongolians)

    Hey man, love the video. You should try more the long bow style! I'm currently working on a 'less long bow' 😂, an elm stave full of knots and with a natural reflex of almost 5 inches! But It's a pain in the neck to hold it steady on the tillering board, because it slips off every time I try to heave it back, how do you usually keep your bows still? As a faithful viewer i would like to challenge you by making a long bow with recurved tips, I don't think it is storically accurate, but still worth the experiment! Atb

    Thanks bro! Yes I make those too rare... Sounds like an exciting project! Above my tillering tree I put (with clamp or screws) a piece of wood to keep a bow away from slipping. You can note it watching my bows being tillerred. Well thank you, I haven't made such a bow yet!

    I’m in favor of letting the bow wobble, you lose a lot of information by clamping it. Which way it leans tells you about which side is stiff and the dynamics of the bow. Many english bowyers use a round bow pivot specifically because it allows the bow to rock (see Del Cat’s channel, or my strap setup)

  • @Calios902

    @Calios902

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DanSantanaBows Hey there, thank you for the suggestion, your strap setup is spot on! I would like to make something similar, how did you build it? How can you hang the bow when previously strung? Anyway the biggest issue is trying to heave back a bow that is not perfectly straight, as an elb should ideally be, so it's relatively difficult to see where it could be stiff or not, just because the 'slipping off' the tiller could be determined by the asymmetry itself. I think I am going to make a post on PA sooner or later. Atb

In Sable palm n live oak forests either a " short bow "and 28" arrows, or a "stick bow" with 32" cedar ,four flight ,arrows! Just MHO..But, these are my tools for hunting n bowfishing! I don’t like English longbows at all. They are extremely inefficient which is why they needed such a high draw weight. The huge length meant the wood wasn’t under as much stress. I guess the rounded narrow limbs and high draw weights were both to help with that.

    English longbow is a very specific type of bow. Referring to it as just a Longbow is entirely correct terminology, even though it’s preferred to say English longbow. For referring to other long bows, one would generally say “recurve longbow” or “compound longbow” though those aren’t technically correct terminologies. Among anyone who knows bows, layman terms are entirely correct unless your doing historical analysis.

    longbows are made from yew and the brits claim they are the best best truth be told, yew is pretty bad wood for bows. Oak and Maple wood are far superior. They tougher, last longer and can withstand stronger pulls. Only advantage of longbow is that it was cheap and was everywhere. Its like your typical dager. Very bad weapon compared to sword but much cheaper then the expensive sword.
