Great video. This lens is sometimes marginalized as a lowly "travel lens." However, I am always amazed by its IQ and versatility. Plus, it's also great to carry as a backup for myriad other lenses - especially out in the boonies. Highly recommended.

I’m looking for a couple of lenses to pair with my X-T4 for a vacation in Vietnam, including a versatile zoom. Do I go XF16-55 (hefty, WR, f/2.8, but no OIS), 18-55mm (lightweight, good OIS, but no WR and could do with the extra width of a 16mm), 16-80mm f/4 (compact, reasonable zoom range but not that bright at the wide end), or this one, the super versatile 18-135? Perhaps a 2 lens kit with the 18-135 and the 16mm f/1.4 for close up, low light and wider shots?

@@Spikesw15 Hi James! This is a great and complicated question. LOL. It's complicated as it depends so much on your personal preferences and specific needs. With the IBIS in X-T4, the lack of OIS in 16-55 becomes less of an issue, but it's still fairly expensive and heavy, and missing a bit of reach on the long end. Personally, my preference is to have as much focal length range as possible, with as few lenses as possible. So, my travel kit is the 10-24 f/4, 16-80 f/4 and 70-300 f/4-5.6. I find I'm ok with f/4 as I'm also ok with ISO 3200 or so for my use. Hope that provides so perspective and food for thought! I hope you have great time in Vietnam, and would love to see your photos. @@Spikesw15 The 18-135 plus the 16 f/1.4 would get my vote. In fact, I traveled with that exact combination on several occasions and had no regrets. I guess it all depends on how much you want to carry around. I was in driving rain on the south island in New Zealand and had my X-T2 and the 18-135 - no water issues whatsoever.

Thoroughly enjoyed your video on this lens !.I also subscribed as I' have watched several reviews on the 18-135 & your review was the best , excellent description & explanation & no opening circus tricks .Going on an international trip in 3 weeks & decided that my 16-55 & 70-300 will not be a good long day walk around lens for my X-T4 & my back.Looked at a few used lens, most gut feelings said no. Have my little used X-E4 for sale this weekend, hopefully to help financing this retiree's new lens. One order coming up.

Thanks so much, David! Regarding autofocus - my experience is it better when it’s on the newer bodies. Having said that, none of Fuji’s autofocus systems are great fast-moving sports or other objects. I have X-T3, and for 95% of what I do I have zero complaints with autofocus. It worked superbly for me on my London trip. Best of luck on your sports photos and have an awesome trip!

This is one of my favorite FUGI lenses. The other is the 18-55 which is outstanding for video. I don't know why don't receive more recognition. My only complaint on the 18-135 is focus breathing in video as I do a lot of horse training vids. For action stills of horses it is my go to lens.

Hello! Many thanks for watching and sharing your comment. I have not used the 18-135 at all for video, but do know that it's a very much a photo first lens. A lens to consider for your video needs might be the XF 18-120mm, which is designed much more with video in mind. Have fun!

If I'd just known this lens when a I got my fuji man, I lost in life. Made rookie mistakes. Hope one day I can save up for this lens ! Thanks for taking the time and showing this, excellent review !

I still have a Canon EOS Rebel S with the infamous 18-135 kit zoom, which is why I was skeptical of an expensive 18-135 superzoom for my Fuji cameras. I was so wrong. This lens is a must-have. Even as someone who prefers to shoot with primes, having this zoom as a back-up allows me to go out with confidence, despite a minimalist kit in my bag. Optically, it is stellar. The one annoying characteristic is the zoom ring being unevenly tight across the zoom range.

Hi! I agree about most other super zooms - they’re not nearly as good as the Fujinon 18-135. I have not noticed the variable zoom ring tightness on my lens - sorry it’s that way for you. Thanks fir sharing!

Hey man, many, many thanks for this review. I'm going on a vacation soon and I wondered what I could pick to upgrade my15-45 kitlens. As a beginner, many things are lost on me and spending a month salary on something overpowered that I won't get the most out of would've feel like a waste. Hi! That's one thing I have NOT used the 18-135mm for - video. Not sure why that is... I see no reason it wouldn't perform well as a video lens. May have to give it a try to see how it does... Great question!

Thanks for your kind words! The 18-135mm is just one of those non-sexy, non-cool lenses that go about their life quietly helping me be flexible in my photography. Kind of like my Subaru Crosstrek - it's not going to win any races, but man, it does lots of things really well and conveniently. Let me know when you get the lens again ;)

It’s going to be a bit larger and heavier than the 18-55, so just be aware of that. Also, the 16-80 would work well with that camera, so you have a couple of really good choices! Cheers!

When I was working for a newspaper, I used a Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 with a Nikon d2H when I traveled. Like you, I found the lens to be a great value for my type of shooting which is mainly documentary/street. I now am shooting the Fuji X-Pro2 with the XF 335mm f2 WR for a weather resistant package. But I am considering this lens because I miss my Nikkor superzoom that, like this lens, for its versatility. Thanks for the review. One question: you say there is an aperture ring on this lens. Where is it? All of the images I see do NOT show an aperture ring (which is the one issue I have with the lens).

Hi Richard! Thanks for sharing a bit of your history. It’s pretty amazing the image quality of modern zoom lenses, and I’m so grateful for the 18-135 and it’s versatility. Regarding aperture ring - it’s there(!) near the rear of the lens, it’s just not labeled with any aperture markings, so easy to visually miss. Best wishes on your photography adventures!

Hi! It is a difficult choice! Here’s what I try to remember: 1) All Fuji zoom lenses are good. 2) No lenses are perfect 3) You can always change your mind. Think of the physical characteristics that are important (size, weight), features (image stabilization, weather sealing) and price. Hope that helps. Cheers on your choice!

This was one of my first Fuji lenses. Well my second to be exact, after the 35mm f2, which I bought with my xt1, both of which I still have. I sold this lens, somewhat spontaneously, because I wanted to buy a bunch of vintage primes with distance markings on them. I kinda regret selling it - I think I would appreciate it's versatility so much more now. Perhaps I'll sell some of those vintage primes and buy it again :).

I bought this lens to replace my 18-55 kit. Really, anyone new to Fuji should get this over the kit lens, which I found myself to outgrow very quickly. It now stays on the cam by default, unless when I am in low light or tight settings, which I switch to the 16mm 1.4

Hi Michael, I am planning on buying a used X-T2 and building a kit around it, hopefully 2 zooms and one prime. My style of shooting is more urban and street and some landscapes while hiking. I love long range zooms and hence always carry a sony rx100 (1" sensor) with a 24-200 equivalent. For the x-T2, I was first planning on getting the 16-80 and the 70-300 (along with a 1.4x TC). But after watching this review, I'm considering the 18-135 (which is equal in zoom range to my small rx100) because like you, I don't like changing lenses. So my question is, what should my 2nd telephoto zoom be, if I go with 18-135 as main lens? 70-300 overlaps by 65mm! The 100-400 is an obvious choice but it can be pretty heavy while hiking. Any ideas? Thank you!

Hi! Welcome to the Fujifilm family!!! Lately, I’ve been using the 16-80 and 70-300 when using 2 lenses. I haven’t retired the 18-135, but if I think I’ll need that extra zoom reach, I’ll use the 16-80 to be just a little wider and have 1 stop faster aperture as well. If you do shoot a lot with just one lens, the 18-135 would be the way to go to add with 70-300. Even though it has some overlap with 70-300, I’m usually at at least 200mm when using the 70-300… Nice to have all these great options!

@@MSladekPhoto Thanks for the reply; I agree with your suggestion. Since I tend to reach 200 mm on my rx100 quite often, getting the one all-in-one lens like a 18-135mm feels prudent. I cannot afford both the 16-80 and 18-135. And 70-300 with TC...also prudent! I've a few questions though: 1) Does the 18-135 lens creep when not in use, hanging by your side lens facing down? Asking because I intend to use the peak design capture clip. 2) Can you do a comparison of 1.4x TC vs 2.0x TC; if you have both of them. The fine balance between image sharpness and the trade off for extra reach debate. 3) SD card: Have heard the angry photographer and several others strongly suggest not to use Lexar. I tend to shoot continuous but only 3 to 4 frames at a time, so as to not miss the moment. No sports or wildlife etc. Would a SanDisk Extreme Pro suffice for my needs? Also, the fuji lens roadmap shows a 18-120 (no aperture mentioned) coming in 2022...it looks quite big though. And hope you can get your hands on the new tamron 18-300 for x mount. The sony version has got some great reviews.

Hi. I'm new on your channel but I glad to find you. You have both lenses that are in my interest: 16-80 and 18-135. I would like to buy 18-135 but I have three questions regarding this lens: (1) does it creeps down? I'm using a peak-design clip on my backpack so the lens would be mostly down-forward (2) does this lens has some toughness between 110-135 reach a different force needs to be use to change the focus rang in that limit? (3) does focus ring goes 360 degree or it has limit from wide to telephoto reach but just do not have aperture markings? Thank you in advance for your answers

Hello and welcome! Answers: 1) my copy did not have lens creep. If you buy used, it might. 2) my version was smooth throughout the zoom range 3) focus ring is 360 degree. I never use manual focus on Fujifilm lenses, though 😉 Hope that helps!

Its a really great travel lens. Especially city break etc. So versitile and decent enough quality. If you want better then take 3-4 lenses with and faff around with rain, dust and the risk of dropping them!

I was undecided between this lens and the 16-80. I ultimately went with the 16-80 and paired it with the 70-300 and the 23 f2 for travel. I would still like to have this lens. But, I think it’s a little over priced.

Hello! I do not have the X-T5, so I have no experience with how the 18-135 performs on Fuji’s new 40MP sensor. Also, I’m not sure if anyone has posted thoughts on this lens with that sensor yet. I’ve printed images from this lens at around 36”x24” and they looked great coming from the 24mp X-T2. Hope that helps!

Hi. Thanks for a great review, it' really boosts my confidence for considering this lens. Still, I notice in the description that you also own the 16-80mm f/4. I'm a Fujiilm beginner and I'm looking for an all-in-one lens for travelling, I do a lot of trekking/hiking when travelling and I'm a small guy so bringing multiple lens is not an option (I learned it from experience with a Nikon with just only 2 lenses). My question is, after reading countless reviews, many people prefer the 16-80mm f/4 over this 18-135mm lens and I wonder why. Could you share some insights from your experience with these two? I have used the Nikon 18-70mm and I know 70mm or 80mm would probably not enough for me but all the love for the Fujifilm 16-80mm f/4 gets me a bit confused. Thanks and best regards.

Hi! Thanks for your comments and questions. The short answer is that while I do have the 16-80mm, I haven't used it very much as it was on my wife's camera. Until she dropped the lens and now it awaits repair or replacement. If I only had one lens, I would still go with the 18-135. I like the extra reach on the telephoto end - but that's my "style." The 16-80 gets you one stop more light at constant f/4, so that's nice. The 16-80 weighs 440g, while the 18-135 weighs 490g - not a huge weight difference, but noticeable. I think any visual quality difference between the 16-80 and 18-135 is also pretty small, and probably not noticeable for most people. I always remind myself when faced with these difficult choices - "There are no perfect lenses. There are no terrible lenses. Choose one, and go create photos!" And then, I usually watch another 10 review videos - haha. Good luck with this tough decisions and happy hiking and photo making!

@@MSladekPhoto Thank you for your super prompt response. Your answer sounds very reasonable. I guess I'll buy the 18-135mm anyway for that 55mm extra zoom. Btw, do you have any comments on the low light performance out in the nature of this lens, let's say bonfire atmosphere and such context?

Hi again! In my experience, the 18-135 focuses well in low light when paired with the X-T3 or cameras with same processor that perform better in low light. The image stabilization works very well in my experience, and I can get away with 1/60 most of the time, and I don't mind using higher ISO's (3200-6400) on the X-T3. Hope that helps!

I bought this lens as a kit lens along with XT1 in 1915 when I switched from Nikon to Fuji and never looked back. Lately, we have been trying to take a minimalist attitude while we travel. While traveling, I carry two lenses - this one and 16mm f/1.4. From XT1, I moved on to XT2, XT3, and now XT4 but this lens stays on the camera all the time. I think this lens never got the proper recognition and thank you so much for featuring this one.

Premium is about the quality of the lens body, performance, feel, etc. Prime lenses are lenses that are fixed focal length that don't zoom in or out.

Hi Michael, why did you trade off it for 16-80 then? I think that as only lens this is more useful (80 is short in my opinion as travel lens). IQ is similar, I prefer the (old style rendering) of 18-135

Hi! Great question 😎 I went with the 16-80mm because I got the 70-30mm. So, now I have lots more reach than 18-135 with these two lenses. The 16-80 is on my camera most of the time, with the 70-300 for those hard to reach places. Next week’s video is a long-term review of 70-300, and I used the 16-80 for thumbnail photos. They look great! Really happy with this combination. Cheers!

Hello! Welcome to your new camera. I hope you have lots of fun creating photos. Yes, I think the 18-135mm is still a very good lens option and will work nicely with the X-S20. Another option, and the one I’m using the most, is the XF 16-80mm f4. Hope that helps!

Hello Michael, I have a pretty specific question and I hope you can help. I noticed that the 18-135 performs very well up to distances of 200/300 meters. But when I take pictures of subjects like buildings or landscapes which are farther away like a kilometer or a mile the 18-135 delivers pretty mushy results (compared) compared to my Olympus 12-100 Pro. I just bought the 18-135 because I want to sell my Olympus gear (I shoot Fuji professionally and I can't afford two systems anymore) and went for a couple of hikes to get some test shots. And I was surprised how sharp the 18-135 is at relatively close distances but as soon as I go long distance the picture gets mushy and the famous Fuji watercolor effect gets very pronounced (both using lightroom and Fuji's own raw converter). Have you made similar experiences or do you have any advice? Thanks in advance! Keep up the great work!

Hi Andreas! This is a very interesting question. I have no specific instances where I have noticed subjects is far distance that appear mushy, as you suggest. Having said that, let me take a look through my photos again of long distance subjects with 18-135 with a more critical eye. I have read several stories online of folks whose 18-135 has various quality issues. Could be a bad sample or maybe I’m just not as critical of sharpness, etc… as some are. Stay tuned for an update. It probably won't affect my decision but know I want to have a side by side comparison with the same subjects and the same amount of atmosphere between me and whatever I'm going to photograph...

@@MSladekPhoto I wish I hadn't done that. Even in the center (I chose the subjects in away that I was able to focus in the center) the 12-100 on the 20MP M43 sensor is noticeably sharper than the 18-135. The closer you get to the corners the bigger the difference becomes. I did the comparison with four subjects. I took three shots (refocused every time) wide open and three shoots stopped down one stop. I only compared the sharpest of the three images. The 12-100 wins every time. When you compare the wide open shot of the 12-100 with the stopped down shot of the 18-135 it's a draw in the center but move away from the center only a little and the 12-100 is clearly in the lead again...

18mm -135 f 3.5 is my firat love lens, then 35mm f1.4 then I got 10 -24 , then now i got 50mm f1.0 so beautiful but soooooooo heavy, i need more muscle

I've got a question, is it only my lens issue or maybe it's common to 18-135: front element "drops out" (like if you do zoom-in to 135) while I'm walking with lens attached to camera on my neck and I have to zoom out it back.. Have you also faced it?

Hi Artur! Thanks for watching and this is a great question. My copy of the 18-135 does not have the “lens creep” you mention. I think that is something that could happen as the lens gets older or it might carry from lens to lens. Having said that, I have not seen anyone else mention that as an issue with this lens… Hope that helps a little!

@@jakoberiksen2944 Hi again! Getting blurry backgrounds is... complicated. Obviously, the easiest way is with a fast lens (aperture 2.8 or wider), however you can also get blurry backgrounds with "slower" lenses such as 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6. Here's how - remember that depth of field is affected by not only aperture, but focal length (more telephoto = LESS depth of field), subject distance to lens (closer to lens = less depth of field) and subject distance to background (more distance from background = less depth of field.) So, with the 18-135 if I want blurry background, I zoom to about 135mm, use f/5.6, get relatively close to my subject, and keep my subject some distance (at least a few meters) from the background. Hope that helps!

@@DragonEye1911 Wow! Small world. I hated the lock because it would forget it was on and then had to take off to zoom. Sometimes missed the shot. I like what Fuji does with the 70-300 - when locked, you can unlock with a little extra twist pressure to zoom. Works really well. Cheers!

LOL, man, you mustn't do a street photography with such a long focal distance (13:42)! BTW - photograhing people looking at their phones is a very bad, boring way to do a street photo.
