LONG RANGE or BULLSH*T?! 270 Winchester Federal Terminal Ascent 136gr Ammo Test

Ойын-сауық

270 Winchester Federal Premium Terminal Ascent 136 grain ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight with 22 inch barrel.
Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

@@masonleathermy factory 270's have 24 inch barrels. While many are offered with 22 inch barrels, there are also many models that come with 24 inch barrels. Check the specs when buying to see which have the longer barrels if that is what you want. There are also models that offer 270 barrels of 28 inch length. Only two of the 270's I have owned have had 22 inch barrels. The rest have had 24 and one a 28 inch. I prefer at least a 24 inch barrel for the 270 so I pick the models that have that length. You have the model 70 featherweight, if you had picked the sporter or supergrade, it would have the 24 inch barrel. If you picked the winchester XPR it would have a 24 inch barrel and if you picked the winchester 1885 in 270, it would have a 28 inch barrel. Other brands have similar options. My NULA 24B in 270 has a 24 inch, and the weatherby vanguard I had, had a 24 inch. The first TC encore I had in 270, had a 28 inch barrel and the one I have now, I purposely got with a 24 inch barrel for its more compact size of just shy of 40 inches, 2+ inches shorter than the featherweight. A ruger number 1B usually comes with a 26 in barrel in 270, as does the browning B78. The ruger number 1A comes with a 22 and the international comes with a 20. Remington 700's are available with 24 inch 270 barrels and also browning X bolts I believe. Interarms mark X's come with 24 inch 270 barrels. There are many 270 rifles available with 24 inch barrels, you just have to pick a model so equipped. Just the same as if you want the more compact size of a 22 inch, those models are available too.

Glad to hear you be doing longer range testing. We'll a find out how these bullets perform. Unlike monolithic bullets, the Terminal Ascent may actually perform better at lower impact velocities and still expand adequately. But we all know that accuracy is the deciding factor at long range. Most bullets designed to expand properly at those ranges usually end up being mediocre at short ranges. They often expand too much and often suffer core separation. This may actually be the best of both worlds. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • @RedvsBluechurch1

So the topic of core separation has always confused me, why does it matter?

  • @denisleblanc4506

    @denisleblanc4506

    7 ай бұрын

Because if you have core separation the remaining portion of the lead core is exposed and will not penetrate as deep as if it was still in the jacket. More retained weight is more penetration. It would also give you a better chance of a pass through and better blood trail. Core separation doesn't mean it isn't a killing shot but in makes recovery of the animal more difficult.@@RedvsBluechurch1

I believe the Terminal Assent bullet design is probably the #1 hunting bonded projectile made. Next would be Norma BondStrike and then Nosler's ABLR. For an all range hunting bullet under 500 yards, it's the one to beat.

I have perhaps a different thought about the long range performance potential of the bullet. While it expanded to a value of 2.2x the original size it mushroomed and rolled back a lot of material. I suspect that at lower velocity values the expansion would still be sufficient but you would see less of the bullet expanded back over itself. I also suspect that you would see significantly less penetration at extended ranges which may also be a cause for concern. All in theory, of course, as I have no first hand experience with this particular bullet.

Again a nicely done video. I have a 270 also and have been waffling about trying the Terminal Ascent. Up here in Canada these range in price at some shops at $69 (w/ tax) to Cabela’s stupidly high price of $104 a box. So I like the results but if they don’t group I hate spending that amount of $. I recently had a Bergara Hunter in 06 and I tried the 175gr Terminal Ascent but in that rifle I could only get 1.75” groups with this ammo. However that gun shot 11 brands of ammo with various weights at 1.75”-3.5+” groups and would not feed any of the rounds. I took it back and fortunately the gun store took it back and I got a Tikka instead. But…this 270 136gr TA has a good sectional density of .253 and the construction should make it good for elk out to 400yds if it expands properly. Thanks for bringing that up. 👍🏾

@@masonleather nice to hear. That 270 is a Tikka also and shoots 3 different brands of ammo 140 and 150 gr bullets into less than one inch. I also just recently got it after an issue with a 30-06 Sako 85 that would eject. Got rid of that too. This new Tikka is a 7 Rem Mag. Took it out today first time and it shot 175gr Rem Core-lokt at .85”, Sellier&Bellot 173gr at 1.2” and Norma Whitetail 150gr at 1.1”. So I’m very happy with that (7 Rem ammo is hard to find up here) and now a Tikka fan.

Better weight retention generally also means that the round is harder and denser, which also means more limited expansion. There's also the catch 22 of engineering a bullet that has good expansion without compromising the BC or strength of the bullet too much in the process. In my opinion, this is a bullet/cartridge load better suited for tougher game. The performance leads me to believe you could make an ethical kill on an Elk at 600 yards, but even that would be a tad iffy to me.

  • @denisleblanc4506

What you say may very well be true for a typical cup and core bullet. This bullet has a rear portion that is like a monolithic bullet and the small lead core at the front is bonded to the jacket. So the front of the bullet will mushroom faster and more easily than a copper bullet and it won't shed lead fragments as much because the core is bonded to the jacket. It is a tough bullet because it holds together and penetrates deeply. Not because it harder to deform or mushroom.

Given the shorter penetration depth of all the other loads, the really good final 2.2x expansion and the 28’ avg penetration of this load, I am a bit worried about a slow expansion. Not sure how the deep penetration would go together with the 2.2x diameter otherwise. And then again what does this look like at 2300 ft/s

I could see this ammo being the opposite of long range ammo. It would make a good eastern woods load for the 270. A bullet that won't blow apart at those close ranges, and still be tough enough for bear, boar and even elk or moose. . I've seen other 0.277 bullets explode on deer inside 100 yards and wouldn't ever use them on larger game.

You get far better expansion on game than on gel blocks once it hits the harder hide, sinew, muscle, bone. Also, the fluid dynamics inside animals, on impact, plays a part in bullet expansion as well.

My opinion on everyone's concerns about expansion and penetration is that it is massively over hyped. I mean if guys killed things 80 or 100 years ago with fmj rounds or solid lead slugs then any modern round will do the trick. My bigger worry is the accuracy of my ammo of choice and that it won't explode going through the game. Even expansion is nice, but not king. I just was zeroing my gun and found it was liking the winchester deer season xp more than the Norma whitetail. And I'm curious about seeing how it would like some of the heavier rounds like 145 or 150 grain. Point is I think accuracy and consistency is better than expansions and bc and velocity and fps.

It’s not a high bar, I’m basing that on dozens of other loads I’ve already tested across multiple calibers and >2x is achieved most of the time (at 100 yards). Federal Fusion routinely expands to >2.5x while retaining 95%+ weight. My numbers are based on actual measured evidence. I never said I expect 2x expansion at 500 yards, that might be ridiculous (I don’t know as I’ve not tested that), only that 2.2x is a bit low at 100 for a bullet that’s supposed to perform at extended ranges also. Based on other results, I’d prefer to see 2.5x or even more at 100 to infer that at 500, 600, etc it’s still going to expand to whatever it’s potential is supposed to be.

@@masonleather The construction of the bullet has to be considered. The bullet is only going to expand down to that solid copper shank, there is a much smaller lead core in the terminal ascent than there is in the fusion, so it's only going to expand so far. From the other videos I've watched there doesn't seem to much difference in the expansion from 100 to 500 yards, the expansion looks very consistent across all ranges.

I used to concentrate on calculated impact energy. 1000 ft-bs for whitetail. 1500 ft-bs for mule deer and elk. But lately, I have found that it is important to consider the velocity required for the round to open up. And that, on average, is 2,000 fps. Granted, a heavier bullet my only need may 1850. And considering the difference between the published MV on the box and what you are actually getting out of that barrel, it might be wise to take the printed MV and subtract 200. Then, calculate the distance where it is still 2,000 fps or slightly above. And that is your effective range. And bigger can be better. .300 PRC at 800 yards will do more damage than the .270 W light grain.

Why would you need more ft lbs for mulie over whitetail? Where I live, they are within 20 lbs of each other and wt seem to be tougher. As for velocity, it was probably factory tested with a 26 inch barrel, while this guy used a 22 inch barrel.

@@nathanadrian7797 Sorry, I generalized. In Colorado, they suggest 1500 for elk. And mule deer are bigger than whitetail but not as big as elk. The general advice I have found on whitetail is 1,000 ft-lbs. However, to me, the energy is ancilliary to the impact velocity and the performance of the specific bullet design. The manufacturer can recommend a minimum impact velocity for that particular bullet model to fully open and do the intended job.

Is there a chance that the closer range and higher velocity “peeled back” the bullet so violently that it actually rolled back into the remaining body of the bullet to give you 2.2x expansion, and that MAYBE if it were going slower at longer distances it wouldn’t expand as violently and would not be peeled back as much, making it be at least the 2x you like to see? I guess the only way would be to test at 400 yards or so to find out. (I’m sure penetration would probably be half a good less at that distance too……)

Hi Mason. I liked your video on the 270. I've been reloading, Load Developing and Long Range shooting for over 50+ years. I've done a substantial amount of developing loads for the 270. All of my loads were with several different weights and brands of bullets. Recently I shot my Weatherby 270 with the 24 inch Barrel and the Hornady 145 grain ELDX Bullets at 3177fps with a .315 sub MOA accuracy. That was 2 grains under max load too. If there is one thing I've learned over these many years is that the 270 needs a longer Barrel. My Browning A-Bolt 2 Medallion with the 26 inch barrel pushed the Nosler 130grn BTs at 3300fps. I shot a nice 4 point at 510 yards with that load. Normally I would never shoot anything past 300 yards. But there were some mitigating circumstances on this hunt so I took the shot. Personally anyone shooting past 300 yards especially with factory ammo at larger animals is a fool. We've got far too many youngsters who think they're Chris Kyle or Carlos Hathcock and presume to thing they're the greatest long range expert out there. I can and have beat the 6.5 Creedmore with my 270 many times. Frankly i'm getting really annoyed at all these new fangled Cartridges coming out that really don't do much better than the old War Horses like the 30-06 and the 270. It's frustrating to see the Factory fudge on their ammo loads like these you tested. i'm seeing a lot of that lately. At any point if you want to know some good loads for your 270 ask me. I know you'll be impressed. Especially at longer ranges.
