Exactly. New and better equipment does not make old equipment any worse. Yes, some advancements can make older equipment obsolete because it’s not used. However, I still hunt with a Flintlock. Carbon composite stocks are more weather resistant than Woodstocks. I would much rather have a Woodstock on my hunting rifle. Better does not mean necessary.

40 years I’ve had a couple a bsa monarch and a tikka I’ve had so many different cal rifles over the years .but I only confidently deer hunt with my 270.it allways puts dinner on the table .never found any think can do anything better. .

Love my 270. Taken mule deer, antelope, elk and moose. Never taken more than 2 shots, and never lost an animal. All under 400 yards. Thanks for sharing.

@@Bushman_sam My Browning x-bolt loves the 140 gr Nosler ballistic tip. I am able to get 3/4" groups all day. It is heavier than the 130 and still shoots pretty flat. My plan is to start reloading and try either a Nosler 165 grain Accubond long range or the Nosler 150 grain Accubond. We will have to see which one my gun likes.

My late wife had a 270 Winchester. I reloaded for it, and it was the absolute most accurate rifle I ever shot. I haven't hunted since she died.

I have ALWAYS said & ALWAYS will say that the 270 is the middle of the ROAD (Caliber) that will work for ANY & EVERYTHING

That .270 they show is actually beautiful. The front yellowish part of the stock actually complements the entire wooden stock. Beautiful work.

The 270 has been and will be an awesome open country cartridge. EDIT: I really liked the story about inheriting a rifle that has a sentimental story.

Jack O'Connor, who said that the 30-06 was the cartridge against which all other cartridges were judged, because it was the standard spent years extolling the virtues of the .270.

I would say that the 30-06 is even better than it was int he past. First we have traditional bonded bullets, partitions, A-Frames and the like. On top of that solid coper bullets have gotten so good that you realisticly shoot 130gr. to 168gr. and use the added velocity to your advantage. Generaly traditionaly for the last 30 years I have been very much against 150gr. bullets in 30-06 and 300WM but with the advant of such fantastic solid copper bullets the case can be made especially int he 30-06 for the use of lighter bullets with out giving up anything! The 30-06 can sling a 130gr. solid copper bullet well over 3000fps.

Jack OConnor, never reported how many animals he lost shooting an under powered 270, …when I was guiding Deer and Elk, clients were not allowed to shoot beyond 150yds if they carried a 270 win and if they went against me and wounded an animal they were done hunting and returned to base camp or hauled out of the woods

Pre64 Mod 70 was, is, and will always be the greatest hunting rifle ever made. You have a fine specimen there. The 270 will still be here after all the newness and "can't find ammo for it" wears off and people come back to their senses. And it will happen.

I've had my model 70 for over 45 yrs. She's a tack driver. You'll be prying it out of my cold dead hands.

Some food for thought: I have a friend who has a Remington 700 chambered in .270 Winchester with a custom 1:7.5 twist barrel that he shoots 156 grain Hammer Hunter copper bullets out of, and here's what he gets out of it... - 156 grain Hammer Hunter copper bullet (G7 BC of .292) - Muzzle velocity: an average of 3,007 fps (Hammer bullets reduce pressure, allowing higher velocity) - Energy at 100yds.: 2,806 ft-lbs. - 400yd. wind drift (10 mph): 8.7 inches - 400yd. drop (200yd. zero): 17.8 inches - Energy at 400yds.: 1,981 ft-lbs. - Maintains 1,500 ft-lbs. out to 620yds. at 2,084 fps - Max range (2,000 fps): 680yds. - Max range (1,800 fps minimum expansion rating for Hammer bullets): 840yds. - Has a +/- 3" MPBR of 305yds. The issue isn't the cartridge, it's the twist rates in factory rifles. All that needs to be done is for manufacturers to build the "old" stuff (.243, .25-06, .270, .308, .30-06, etc.) with modern, faster twist rates to allow them to shoot higher BC bullets to show their true potential. To anyone reading this: don't let anyone tell you otherwise, the old stuff is just as capable and relevant as ever. They just need faster twist rates to bring them into the modern age to show what they're truly capable of. Additionally, for anyone looking for a factory rifle with a fast twist rate, Christensen Arms announced the $899 Evoke bolt-action rifle at this year's SHOT Show that is chambered in .270 Win with a 1:7.5 twist rate barrel from the factory. Given the performance my friend is getting with his .270 with 1:7.5 twist, I'm strongly considering getting one myself. The rest of the industry just needs to get 'er done. Additionally, don't tell any Canadian that .270 "isn't enough gun" for moose. Tons of people take moose up here with .270 every year, and have done so without issue for decades. With the proper bullet, like a Partition, a bonded bullet, or a copper like the Hammer Hunter bullet mentioned above, it'll drop ANY size of moose that walks in the wilderness. I know the .270 debate will go on forever, but it seems to me the only people who doubt .270 for moose (or elk for that matter) are people who either don't own a .270, or who have never shot one with .270 to know. It's much more capable than the naysayers will ever give it credit for.

I am using hammer 117 gr 57.5 gr 4831sc getting about 3200 ft sec. Its a Tikka t3. That 22 inch barrel really limits 270, 2506, and even 280 ai I'd love to see a faster twist 26 in barrel. On those 3 cartridges

As mentioned, my friend is averaging 3,007 fps with that loading, and all calculations were done with the shooterscalculator ballistics calculator, which is the same one Ron uses for all his calculations. So anyone can cross check those numbers. Additionally, the calculations were compiled at a standard of zero elevation at sea level, and at 59F degrees for the sake of fairness. However, if someone hunts at 4,000, 6,000 or 8,000 feet in elevation, the numbers will be even better. Any given reader's numbers may vary, but that zero elevation (with the exception of the higher 59F temperature calculation) is actually more challenging, so in most cases for most people, the numbers I listed should actually be even better after they do calculations for their own area and hunting conditions. Anyway, since you appreciated the numbers, for the sake of transparency, I thought that was worth mentioning. Cheers.

@@travissmith-wz5nc Yes, my friend's rifle has a 24-inch barrel, which helps the velocities a bit more. Perhaps 40-50 fps more over a 22-inch barrel. It's too bad Tikka doesn't make a longer barrel for you. It's also too bad that they make .30-06 and .308 with inexplicably low 1:11 twist barrels. I'm a .30-06 guy and I'd probably have a Tikka if it weren't for the slow twist rate. I sometimes shoot 220 grain round nose, so a 1:11 twist barrel is no bueno. However, if you're ever initiated enough you could have a custom barrel made for your Tikka. Tikkas have great actions and getting a fast twist rate barrel made for it would be cheaper than getting a new rifle. I think the Tikka action is worth it. You could chase after a lot of other guns and do worse. Food for thought anyway. Cheers.

On mule deer I've never had a buck move from being shot with a 130gr partition. Heart shot,lung shot,high shoulder shot,neck shot. I list all of those because I take the shot the animal and train gives and I've taken all of them with it. Farthest shot probably right around 250-275 yards and it was a lung shot. Loaded 150gr partitions for elk and I never got a shot at one with that load. A friend took two moose with it and it did it's job just as well.

I live in sweden after listening to Ron and given the opportunity I bought a remington 700 lefty in 270win and I love it much better then my old 308w 😂

Yeah 270 win really out does 308 once you get past 250 yards with flatter shooting to boot.

I seen a goat killed at 660 yards with a 140 grain Hornady sst 270win.savage rifle. Pretty good for outdated caliber.

Outdated cartridge, not caliber. New cartridges are still coming out in n the caliber so the caliber being outdated wasn’t even the question.

I never shot a 270 but one day I got a bargain new rifle in 270. I could not resist. Bought it then took it hunting for Red deer and I totally fell in love with the 270 even though I dream of a 7mm rifle. However I have a personal dislike of short neck cartridges that most new 7mm come in. So for now I’ll keep going with my love for my 270.

A .270 Win is still a superb round, and so many of the rifles chambered in that historic round are still around and shoot great.

I started hunting in Montana, and I opted for a 270 over the 30-06 because it shot a little flatter. I used that rifle for a long time until I switched to the 7mm-08 for the ability to shoot slightly larger diameter projectiles out of a short action rifle.

Thanks for the video! I have gotten my 1in10 twist 270 to shoot the 165 ABLR extremely well. I've taken it out to 800 yards with a lot of success. My friend has loaded the 170 gr Berger EOL in his 270 with a 1in10 twist. He gets great accuracy and has taken it to 1000 yards.. He gets 2840 FPS with it as well. The reason it works is because we are at higher elevation. Other KZreadrs have tried it at around 1400 feet with their 270WSM and get great results with the 165 ABLR.

Did you lengthen the throat for the longer bullets? I have an 8 twist 270 that’s throated for the heaviest. I’m getting 2940 fps with the 170 nosler ballistic tip. It averages half minute groups at 100 yards. I haven’t had the chance to stretch it out yet to see what it really does yet.

@@ReloadingWeatherbymy barrel is only 23 inches. The longer throat gives quite a bit more usable space for powder. Also, I’ll add that I used reloader 26 to get my results.

Love my 270 Weatherby!

IMO 270 is a PERFECT 'all around use' cartridge. Even the 130grs are within 200-300 ftlbs of a 180gr 30-06 at any distance so a deer or antelope will never notice and that 150gr accubond or 145gr eldx from a 270 is basically the same or MORE energy than the 180gr '06 so you are good to go for elk BUT you get a flatter trajectory than the '06.

Pre-64 model 70 featherweight, my favorite. Has a redfield 6x scope. Has never failed me. I have a partial labrum tear so don’t get to shoot it much.

I bought my first rifle when I was about 12 years old. It was a 270 Remington model 700. My dad’s buddy sold it to me so he could buy a 7mm-08 for disabled kids to shoot for Catch a Dream. I’ll never let that one go. It’s one of my 3 primary whitetail rifles.

I have 2 rifles in the 270 win with 2 other 270 win in the shop being built from old mauser actions. I collect rifles and the 270 is one of my favorite as it was Jack O’Conner favorite too but my favorite is the 30-06 followed by the 300 wsm. 60+ years of collecting reloading and hunting and a man can never have to many rifles, those 8 rifles in the shop being built and having about every cartridge in my collection at one time or another! What made the 270 is when the scopes came out and made the 270’s extra reach available and that’s when Jack really started liking it because the 270 came out in 1925 and didn’t even make much of a splash until the Redfield snd Leupold scopes came on the scene!

I am a bit on the old side now and I struggle with the "modern" cartridges. I moved from UT to TX and then to AK and the 270 continues to perform flawlessly. There are some other ancient cartridges i enjoy as well such as the 300 Weatherby, the 308, the 7mm Remington, and the 45-70 but the 270 is an all around great choice for many game animals

I’ve thought that maybe I should have a 270, as a SHTF backup. Ammo is everywhere.

All the points for and against were all valid. But I'll still stick with the 270 for staying power; it's cheaper, more plentiful, and if things become scarce, I can always make brass from 30-06 or other 30-06 family of cartridges.

I shall always own a .270Win. My first was a Tikka LSA65, and shot from 130gr to 165gr really well. My second (current) is a Howa 1500, and it shoots 140gr to 165gr very well. It is finicky with 130gr loads. I am on my last box of old 165gr Sako Hammerheads, and have developed a new “permanent” load with the 140gr Viper mono-metal bullet, called the Plains Supreme. I’ve shot from as small as Rock Hyrax to as large as Giraffe with .270Win. These days I am feeling more dated than the .270Winchester.

I love all of the 06 case cartridges, so versatile and effective!

My brother in law walked into a Sears in the early 70’s said he needed a rifle. Salesman handed him a 270 in a Ted Williams (mod. 70). Never failed to bring home deer and elk for 30 plus years. With open sights. In his 50’s he switched to a 06 with a scope.

I have one of Bob Shapel's last firearms he built before his unfortunate passing, a Military Mauser 98 action with a Traister MK II safety in an incredible Bishop stock, chambered in .270 Win. My bang around .270 is a 1952 M70 standard grade and my Wifes' Elk rifle is a 1949 M70 WCF in a Reinhart Fagen Sportsman stock. They all shoot 3/4 to1 MOA when we do our part.

I’m young but an old soul or so iv been told. That being said I own many rifles but my 3 main cover all the bases rifles for North America are .243win, 270win, 300win mag. I reload for them all and have 100% confidence in all 3 calibers to do anything I need from varmint to all medium and big game on our continent (not that iv hunted grizz/brown bear) but we all know a 300win has done it. Now my age (37 years young) but my passion for “classic” calibers keeps me content with the tried and true offerings. Also with that age comes my insight into new and “improved” offerings. If I was to revamp my 3 main rifles I would honestly say the 6mm creedmore in place of 243win, 6.5prc in place of 270win, and 300prc in place of 300win mag. I’m set in my original choices but those 3 new cartridge designs would be my modern choices for all. All imho of course. Cheers from a Canadian hunter and shooter 🍻🇨🇦👍🏻

I think everyone misses the point of the 270 Win. you can carry an ultra-light rifle with a 22 inch barrel, get 3268 Fps. out of a 130 grain bullet, have the recoil, just at or just under the 30-06, and can kill anything on earth minus dangerous game. if you get a custom break down rifle, with two barrels, you get 2930 Fps. out of the Berger 170 grain bullet. Which is right at the 6.8 Western performance so why would I get anything else??? Now I am older now, and with the under performing ammo out there I would stop at Elk, and below for the 270 Win. Great Show.

What powder, brass, and bullet are you using to get 3200+ out of shorter barrels? R-26 is by far the fastest powder I've found for the heavier bullets, and R-16 does seem to get near 3200, but in my experience, using the highest-capacity brass, trying to get to 3200 with a few different bullets got me ejector marks in a couple different guns.

I have been enjoying your channel for a couple years now, but this is the first one I felt inclined to comment on. At the age of 12, I purchased my first rifle, a Rem 700 in 243 Win., a great cartridge for California. That would have been 1970. Right after my 18th birthday, my grandfather gave me his shotgun and rifle, a browning A5, and a browning semi auto in 270 win. It had a carbine length barrel and the serial number said it was made in 1959. I hunted many years with it,a great rifle for everything that California could throw at it. I shot it at the range out to 500, but my longest hunting shot was a little over 200. Performed perfectly. Your channel always seems to bring back memories. Thank you for all the great info.

I just picked up an XPR Hunter (True Timber Strata) in 6.8 Western topped w/ a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x44 scope. I absolutely love it. Ammo isn't cheap, but I'm thrilled we are still able to find it. It seems the 7 PRC hasn't served the 6.8 the death sentence just yet that people had predicted! I hope we can keep it alive, i really do love the cartridge. Along w/ the original 270 Winchester. Both great cartridges.

I just restored a 1960’s Sako Finnbear in 270. Bought it at a pawn shops for $600. My first 4 loads were all sub-moa. It’s now officially a keeper. Nosler 150 gr Ballistic Tips all the way. Great video Ron!

I never owned a 270 , my first rifle was a 30-06 for a long time, but for some years now it's been 300 WSM, 7MM Rem Mag, and now 7 PRC

I've honestly never hunted or even shot with a .270. Growing up in Oregon the first gun that I hunted with after I passed my hunter safety course when I was twelve was my grandfather's old .300 Win Mag and my first rifle that I owned was a 7mm Rem Mag. Now I live in Florida and have a .243 which I figure is more than enough gun for the game that I'll be hunting here.

I've never heard anyone complain after being shot with a .270. That should put this inane discussion to rest.

It shocks me how many folks fall for marketing. The 6.5 creed is a perfect example. Nice round? Sure. But same thing as 6.5 swede....260 rem....and a few others. Same with a bunch of new rounds out, but 270 win is still hard to beat

There is no other rifle that makes that sound like the action on a pre64 model 70 action. Music to my ears. Strong and solid.

Terminal accent are the best game bullet made. I've never seen a bullet hit that hard n give a pass through also. TA brings the best of all worlds into one bullet.

now that is a riflemans rifle! bravo! well done and beautiful. I purchase the Wichester Supergrade in 270win because i wanted to have that classic rifle. with todays modern ammo its plenty capable out to 500 yards on elk.

It's still relevant. Granted, most of my long-range success has been with antelope. I have taken antelope at 659 yds, 526, 450, 437, 359, all with a 130 gr hornady interbond hand loads. I've taken deer at those yardages, too. Took an elk, too, but that was only 45 yards. It's accurate and deadly.

270 is still a great round.

Love you two guys! Always the best information, stories, program for hunters and shooters when you both are together. Always so glad when you have Joseph on. My father gave me his Remington 721 in .270 to me before he passed away. Of all my different rifles, that .270 is special to me. It was dads, and it’s my go to rifle. I’ve found that a 6cm elevation at 100m allows shots up to 300m with no correction. Complete peace of mind in terms of ballistics and ethics.

In 2018 I shot a Yukon ram measuring 41 1/2* with my Model 70 .270 Winchester. I used a fixed 4X Leupold scope and 130 gr Sierra handloads. I'm a Jack O'Connor fan. It still works.

I’ll have to try some if I can ever find any. I know IMR 7828 SSC really woke up both of my 270s and they both shoot the exact same load to exact same velocity with 3 shot groups well under 1/2 inch. I don’t think I’ll ever sell either one unless it’s stupid kind of money!

I inherited a 1980s model remington 700 BDL in 270 a few years ago. Beautiful gun, looks to be almost unused, and i immediately threw a sig scope on it, and bought the cheapest Herters 270 ammo i could find. Haven't taken any game with it, but that gun is very accurate, and doesn't kick bad for not having a recoil pad. I plan to use it almost exclusively the next few deer seasons. And probably black bear seasons as well.

I just took my largest whitetail buck (a nice wide 8-point, you don't see many big bucks in my part of West Virginia) this past season with my 270 Winchester (Remington 700 ADL with laminate stock).

My last rifle purchase was a Benelli Lupo .270. Living on the East Coast I have not had an opportunity to take a shot beyond 200 yards and would not even attempt a shot beyond 300 yards or so. I know my limits.

As a kid who grew up with rifles and shotguns in my hands for age 8 on and hunted anything that moved from quail to ducks to squirrels to deer to wild hogs, to turkeys with just home grown ballistic knowledge and then went on to shoot a one point shy of a perfect score in qualification in Marine Boot camp so was allowed to request Scout Sniper School, but have never hunted since, it is very enjoyable to listen to two gentlemen talk ballistics and rounds on the venerable .270 Winchester.

I have a 270 Winchester that my Uncle Bob gave me , I am 74 years old. Back in the day I reloaded this with the Barns MRX which was the finest bullet ever produced. I purchased all the MRX I could find when they discontinued them. And still have 150 bullets in the 250 gr which I have loaded my 338 WINCHESTER Ruger bolt action stainless and a used 340 Weatherby I bought and put a Carlson stock with a Vortex scope. My Son who lives in Alaska shot an 800 lb Alaska Brown Bear with a Remington in the 300WSM firing the 180 gr MRX , all the times the MRX was a one shot kill.

I have a Tikka T3X 270 (1:10 twist) mounted with a fixed power 6 x 42 Schmidt Bender. The reticle is rock solid. I shoot exclusively Hornady Superformance SST 140 gr. and zero'd at 200 yds (6" drop at 300yds). I use a range finder and know my ammo ballistics, so can shoot with confidence out to 400 yards. Most game I shoot is within 300 yards. I prefer a neck or head shot as the game drips like a rock without taking a step.

I had a Winchester Model 670 in 270 Winchester that shot 10 shot 1 hole groups at 100 yards. It was the plainest looking rifle that I ever owned but what a shooter it was. I had a Bushnell ScopeChief 2 1/2- 8 power scope with Command Post on it with Weaver mounts and rings.

I have applied many times for an out of state tag for moose in Maine. I was lucky enough to draw it twice. I loved hearing Mainers talk about hunting in the big woods for these incredible creatures when I hunted in Maine. The old timers hang in there with the classic cartridges - mostly 30-06. There were two old timers that spoke about the virtues of the 160 grain Nosler Partition in their 270’s. They have both taken moose as hunters and helped other hunters anchor their moose when they were guides. Know your firearm, practice, and match your projectile with the game - the 270 Winchester will not disappoint. One of the greatest American classics…. If you fancy the newest & greatest, that’s one thing - if you love the history & heritage of hunting, there is no better. Thank’s Jack.

My dad took a lot of elk in Colorado in the 60s with a Winchester 98 with a Mauser action in 270. Still have the rifle. RIP old man.

I've had a lot of success with the 270 win using monolythic bullets in far northern Alberta. The longest shot I've taken was 264 yards. There really aren't any close shots here. I have yet to find fault with it. You may know that our animals are on the very large size. It's never failed to seal the deal quick and ethically.

.270 hard to beat

Lots of people lying to themselves in these comments.... It may be the best thing in your grandpa's cabinet with lots of anecdotal evidence to prove it, but it's NOT the best thing ever made. It's a perfectly fine round, just like pretty much every other round out there. There is nothing special or inadequate about it.

Thanks, as always, for your content, Ron! I’m a hunter in Switzerland and just got a .270 for hunting ibex and chamois in the Alps … as well as red deer, roe and wild boar! The issue here is that hunters must use a minimum caliber of 7mm. Hence a 6.5 is off the table. Nevertheless, your videos convinced me the 6.5 doesn’t have significant advantages over the .270. Moreover, hunters here are also required to take their shots within 250 meters.

Factory ammo is cheaper, simple answer is that i can practice more, making the round more effective

Good presentation guys! If/when I am heading out with .270 WIN here in Alaska... my factory loading all-rounder selection is running Barnes Vor-TX 130 gr. TTSX. I have to think about bigger critters deer hunting the coastal mountains on the way back down - lol. The .270 WIN in particular I have held onto is BSA Majestic Featherweight. Barrel is short and compact to begin with, and before I obtained it somebody cut the BESA recoil reducer off. Barrel is stamped specifically 130 grain bullets to be used, and that in fact is what it likes. Fun little ol' classic claw extractor control round feed light rifle (like maybe 6ish lbs. at most)... and many folks have asked to take her off my hands over the years. Not sure what it would be worth nowadays???

When I bought my first hi-powered rifle, I looked long and hard at the 270. But, I saw the light and up ended the 270 caliber, and went with the 280 Remington in a Rem 700 BDL. Also from the 30-06 case

270 is still very capable in the majority of most hunters real abilities. For deer sized animals my 270 really likes the Barnes LRX 129 grains

If you're talking about the 129 grain LRX I have used superformance with good results and reloader 17 which is my go-to but is hard to find but anything in the 4350 burn rate should work Barnes has quite a bit of data for that bullet

It's an outstanding legend.

It is still very popular in the Scottish Highlands for stalking red stags on open moorland or the mountain slopes. It certainly works well in my experience.
