Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons: The Film that went too far!

Фильм және анимация

Original series director Kenji Misumi returns for one final film in Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973).
This fifth instalment once again portrays an episodic series of events in which Itto Ogami played by legend (Tomisaburo Wakayama) and his infant son are hired from their life on the road to commit an assassination, all the while being pursued by the evil Yagyu clan.. the same one that schemed to have Ogami cut loose as a ronin way back in Sword of Vengeance.

This was one of my favorites in the series. Very dark. The air of desperation, violence and madness are tangible. This is the road to hell. Cool series of commentaries. Great films that deserve to be watched and remembered. 🍻

Just finished this one this morning. I feel Ogami Carrie’s all of these deaths with him and is just hiding the depression within. He’s definitely used to it but there’s no way it doesn’t bother him somehow he just doesn’t show it. I think the father son relationship is very subtle. The diagoro sub plot is a great showing of how their relationship is and you can see throughout the series he cares for daigoro.

He's an assassin, in the comic a priest, the one he must kill but he is in doubt, taught him on how to be a real assassin, that is "meet your parent, kill your parent, meet Buddha, kill Buddha". The priest told him to come back after he understand the meaning of it then he can carry on his mission. So Ogami meditate for some while in front of Buddha statue, then slash the statue. The priest is HAPPY the moment Ogami slash his head and say "perfect..." 😁 That's why he just kill the ones he's hired to kill, that's The Way of Assassin. He's not a Hollywood assassin 😆

Feudal Japan was not for the faint of heart, nor the less than open minded or, no disrespect, soft western ways of thinking. Ogami Itto was the ideal father for the child of a samurai, especially one born into a world where tragedy was not only often experienced, but glorified into a beautiful form of plays in the Kabuki theatre. I’m Native American and could see a very similar story like this happening in colonial America. Some may see Ogami’s not helping Daigoro when he was being whipped as barbaric or cruel, but Daigoro was raised to be prepared to die whether it be alongside his father or alone. He was hardened to survive, and not show fear as he traveled with Ogami to avenge his mother’s death and their betrayal by the Yagyu clan. Daigoro believed it was right to keep silent, and would die for that belief. And Ogami was in a sense there silently as a reminder and, believe it or not, support for his son. As for the killing of the woman and kid, And forgive me if I’m wrong as it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movies, but it was due to the the contract as well as killing all three would deal a huge blow to the Yagyu clan, which is no different from the Yagyu taking his wife from him in an attempt to break him, making him unable to fight. Ogami would do anything to hurt The Yagyu clan’s leader, all beginning with killing all of his sons. It’s one of my favorite movies series and I love coming back to them. If I’m wrong about any of my info, please let me know as I always want to have my facts straight.

"Me and my son walk the demon way in hell." I saw Shogun Assassin years ago and stumbled upon this series on streaming. It's definitely ten times better and this is not like western Cinema with your "good vs evil" Ogami is a killer and is not a "good guy" he's an assassin and in many story lines (like killing the mother and daughter and father of the clan which was hiding the prince) he was righting a wrong according to fedual Japan (he saved that clan from destruction) I think the violence is of course absurd and over the top (par for the course of these movies) but it's Feudal Japan and feudalism is a brutal system. I actually love that about it.

Many of the action scenes are realistic as to what happens when a sword cut, and where on the body it cuts. All slices are not equal. One of the 3 Amigos had a handset like Wolverine and when he stabbed them the blood came out quite organized to the blow. I was never afraid of Frankenstein as even as a kid I did not believe you could put pieces of a human together and reanimate the pieces back to life. I didn't find out until I was a full adult that Frankenstein killed the little girl, they censored that when I was a kid. I never knew why the villagers were so angry.

This is where I felt the franchise ran out of steam. The plot and resolution where really go but the pacing wasn't executed (no pun intended) well. The best parts for me was the ending and Daigoro's side plot which just solidified what a bad ass he is. He was the MVP of this and the pervious movie, but more so in this one.

Great review. I liked this film, quite a lot. I didn't understand the 2nd mission until the end. Then it made complete sense. The film kinda needed it. The problem I had with the film is three fold. First, the idea that 5 vessels would give a part of the mission brief. Suppose the first one had his head chopped off? The mission would have been over. Second, the first attempt to kill the prest. Why didn't he just do it? I'm trying hard to come up with a reason that actually works. Third, the way the 2nd mission is given. No proper secrets given. I love the pick pocket bit, had a tear during the flogging bit. It's a father/son thing. Thank you for uploading.

I like your stuff, but this film is by far my favorite in a series that I love more than any other. I think a lack of familiarity with Japanese history, and maybe that plot confusion you mention, reduced the enjoyment you might have otherwise gotten from the film. For me, the piecemeal revelation of the plot, the badass Daigoro moment, the way that Ogami slowly and relentlessly circles behind the feckless, doomed daimyo, assuming his executioner’s stance with terrible inevitability, and the masterful battle with the Kuroda masked men made this film amazing from beginning to end. If it helps you at all, just consider that Ogami didn’t kill the daimyo, his mistress, and their daughter, so much as the weak-willed daimyo himself did, the moment he chose to lock up his son and lie to the Shogunate. That’s why the Kuroda men were so desperate to hire Ogami-when the Shogunate inevitably found out, every member of the clan would have been dishonored, executed along with their families, and the clan itself liquidated, its finances claimed by the bakufu. Only by having Ogami do what was needed could the true heir be saved, the retainers and their families saved from death, and the clan itself survive, instead of becoming another notch on the Yagyuu scabbard. There was never a scenario in which the daimyo, his mistress, and their daughter could survive for more than a year (when the daimyo and heir would need to make the pilgrimage to Edo), only one terrible one in which they didn’t drag everyone else in the Clan to dishonor and the grave along with them.

The battle between Ogami and the Kuroda Clan at the end is the best sword fight in any samurai movie. Don't let this review put you off. I watched all of the series in 1995 about 30 times each. It was difficult to tire of them. Most Don't know that there was another final episode called Habdful Of Sand. I bought a low resolution Bootleg copy. I lost it, but I plan to one day find and buy an authorized copy. So should you.

Kill a child (The Daimyo's Daughter, dressed as their dead son) or let the entire fiefdom and the secondary family in Kyoto be killed, man, woman, child and the samurai serving that lord? It's not very hard to choose. For Ogami, five brave generals set up that assassination begging Ogami to make that choice. This film trumps the others on obligation and Buddhist ethos.
