Yeah, NYC taxis are dying. You have to have a taxi medallion to operate one and ride sharing services have devalued the medallions so much, they are practically worthless.

Nope, nyc taxis 1000 times better. In London for a 3km ride the guy wanted to charge me £85. In nyc for a 3km ride the guy wanted to charge me $24. Clear win for New York.

You're right - lots of features in the London Taxis and wheelchair accessibility is one of the best things. The newer ones are Geely/Volvo hybrids too and drive beautifully and are cleaner. I usually have a heart attack when I get in them and watch the ticker tick up. At approx £7 a mile (tfl.gov.uk/modes/taxis-and-minicabs/taxi-fares?intcmp=4223) probably one of the most expensive ways to travel. A flight from London to Singapore which is 6000 miles would only cost 15p per mile if the ticket cost £1000. So it would cost you around 40-50 times more expensive than flying there vs taking a taxi. No wonder they now feature in adult films "sorry luv, but if you can't pay..."

You’ve got to be kidding me? I’m from NYC and even I know London wins this one. NYC taxis are a death trap.

One reason I will always love the london black cab is because every black cab is wheelchair accessible. They all have a ramp that pulls out under the door so I know I can get in any black cab without issue. Now I’m in an active chair (was in a power chair for a while due to shoulder injury) so I can get in a standard car and take my wheelchair apart, but wheeling up and down a ramp is a lot easier and quicker and power chair users can’t do that. Wish all taxis were like this!

As a parent, the black cabs have that backwards seat you can put a smaller kid in safely without a booster. You can also fit 6 people in the standard black cab. Absolute win for London here.

Black cabs cost a bit more because they and their drivers are worth it. The design means they can also do a full 360° turn in their own length, and now they take card too. You also don’t need a cab for a lot of London journeys you can do by bus or by tube, so getting one can be a fun novelty for us other folk. Honestly, no cab in the world beats London cabs

I agree with you. We can take Ubers, but I’d take a black cab every time someone is visiting because it is such a special experience.

London cabs are far better. You got this one wrong. There’s a lot more to the journey than just the price of the fare. London cabs are iconic, spacious, polite, drivers, wheelchair, accessible, and just very cool to ride in.

Well, every street in a 6 mile radius of charring cross. still a bloody huge area but I live in outer london 10 miles from Charring Cross and thus a black cab driver would not necessarily know the route to my house all too well besides getting to Chiswick bridge, from which I'd be able to guide them if necessary.

This is novelty in 2023.

In london there is so much competition now with private hire so black cabs are a small part of the argument, but when you get in a black cab, the design is great, acsessible, spacious and provides anazing veiws of the city, and the drivers know where they are going and you know that you'll be going the quickest way possible, also the metre on london black cabs is way more strictly regulated than on nyc taxis, its impossible for a cabie to cheat it

Just because London Cabs are expensive doesn't make NYC ones better, London Cab drivers are very talented and smart on where you ask them to go, they have to know everywhere within the 6 mile radius from Charing Cross!

The reason the London Taxi fare is so high is because the quality of service is far higher. the Hackney Carriages are accessible, capable of negotiating the tight and twisty streets of central london and most importantly can do it all faster than an Uber driver with a GPS. The accessibility of the Black Cab is honestly unparalleled in any taxi I've seen outside of the UK, pretty sure you can't get a wheelchair on a Crown Vic.

London taxi costs a fortune cos the driver knows EVERY street and building by heart and is basically a tour guide as well so you're getting 2 for the price of one, they spent a minimum of 4 years just learning it all and the history of everything etc it's basically a whole doctorate but on streets rather than anatomy

Slept many a night sleeping in a London taxi, landlady wouldn't let us in after 10PM, her husband had an old Austin London taxi, locks easy to pick so I slept in his a lot as a teenagers, even gave him the rent money instead of giving it to her as I had slept more in the taxi one week I did that in front of her and she went nuts lol)

Definitely London. The quality of the drive you get is better. Does it take a NY taxi driver 4 years to even qualify for the job? Does a NY taxi drive know 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks in NY? Do NY taxi drivers give free taxi rides for children going to and from children hospitals? London may cost more, but you're paying for time, and expertise. The fact people waste their money by not not asking or talking to the London taxi driver is their own fault.
