London Underground: Northern line trains at Chalk Farm

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a short film about some Northern line trains at Chalk Farm station in the London borough of Camden.
Chalk Farm is just one station north of Camden Town, which is a major Northern line hub with northbound branches to Edgware and High Barnet as well as southbound branches via Bank and Charing Cross. Chalk Farm station was opened in 1907 and is situated on the Edgware branch of the line. When the station opened, all trains ran to Charing Cross, but today southbound services also run via Bank.
The station does not have escalators. There are either lifts or a staircase to reach the platforms. Another unique feature of the station is the long wedge-shaped station building at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Haverstock Hill and Chalk Farm Road.
All trains on the northern line are operated by the lovely 1995 Tube Stock.
Enjoy!

Do people just guess when the doors are gonna close? Many of America's train doors also seem to chime at the exact same time the doors are closing rather than just before which eliminates the purpose of the chime which is to warn people to get out of the way

I confess I have no engineering expertise concerning the design of metro/subway rolling stock. However I note this London type (and correct me if wrong, other London type rolling stock as well) have doors moving outside the structural frame of the car using a roof slit mechanism. My impression is that almost all other systems worldwide, for safety require doors to be in frames integral to the side structure of the car, and inside the plane of that side structure. sorry if those are not precise terms used by designers or engineering students.

In case you were wondering, those are called "plug doors." Their main advantage is taking up less room compared to normal sliding doors, which is particularly important with how small the London Underground rolling stock is. I'm personally not a fan of using them on rapid transit; like you mentioned, the outward sliding doors can be dangerous for those waiting on crowded platforms. They're also slower to open and close, and they are more susceptible to damage from the elements and from people pushing on them.

John Morrison IIRC it actually increased the strength of the structure by going to external doors as previously the doors were in pockets in the body shell. Now the doors and their mechanism is completely outside the structure. Also the Electric doors are much faster then the older air powered design

Air power? No one has used that since the 70's. Or at least where I am from. In Sydney the last trains to use it are almost phased out. I have not seen a train design since the 80's that uses it.

These are not plug doors. There are 3 types used on trains these days, plug, interior sliding and exterior sliding. These are exterior sliding, for them to be plug doors they must move on more than one axis. In my opinion exterior sliding gives you the disadvantages of both plug and interior sliding, while giving you only one of the advantages, speed.

they can only use stations with step free access. this station doesn't have step free access to street so they don't need to bother making the platform level with the train. there are about 70 stations with step free access and the numbers slowly growing.
