London's City Wall and Barbican - Rather Splendid Walk

A tremendous walk around London's rather splendid ancient city wall built by the Romans alongside the modern Barbecan centre.
We pass the panyer boy who marks the highest point in the city of London (or does he?).
Christchurch Greyfriars which was never rebuilt after the war. Watts memorial to self sacrifice, livery companies, a buried head of a king and Shakespere's house.
As usual there is a lot more with many interesting facts about London as we take a delightful walking tour around this area packed with London history.

Just add me diamond, I recognise many of your sights when I moved from up North ie Hartlepool to London for work I lived in the streets of London for 3 months including thru the kings x fire 🔥 and the Great storm, I passed thru Kings x 5 mins before the fire in 87, and passed back thru the area on the underground when I returned ( I rode the underground rails ) you could then for hours for 50p, and watch the mail train , I remember the great storm within a month in 87, the police ushered everyone of the Waterloo concorse as the glass in the roof was collapsing onto the concourse, the police said stay near the station, I however , went for a walk around London as I thought it was a unique opportunity to see The greatest capital in the world, 300 hundred year old trees fallen across the Mall, Now back up North but probably end back up on streets ( maybe in London). Your films are superb and unique 😊 Cheers Joolz 🥂 Alan

18:45 interesting it's named after a fort, the Barbican does remind me of a big sea fort outer walls always stained with dripping water. Walking around there even during a lunch time down the narrow corridors, there's just no one about even though as you state in the video, practically all homes are occupied. The outer courtyard is always empty. You can regard it as a semi failed project that just keeps chugging away through the ages.

Thomas btw was Christian's brother so he would be a ?x-gr uncle. But his father & uncle were Lord Mayor (obviously at different times - I believe John was even High Sherrif at one point) during the time of Henry the VIII & it is said that they had a huge home down on the Old Roman Road - even though I really enjoyed your vid you did on the Gresham, the Grasshoppers & The Exchange, I found it sad to see that huge modern bank built over the top of where it once stood.

Loved learning about the Barbican, I found that building to be wistful and melancholy, beautiful in a concrete and sorrowful way --- loved loved loved it. Merci

I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2009. Seeing you walking around the Barbican complex bought back some really nice memories that I'd not thought about for a little while. So thank you! Loving this channel and your style; you got yourself a new subscriber.

The content of you videos never disappoints! Before I watched your channel I had no idea that London had so much to offer. I can't wait for lockdown to end, so that I can go on an adventure to London for the day!

Thanks for another awesome vid! I pretty much copy all your walks for my outings around London and have always been meaning to go to The Barbican so now I am going to trace the entire wall from Blackfriars to The Tower on my next walk. Thanks! I can't even imagine the amount of research that must go into each of your videos!

Brilliant Joolz! One of the best walks around London I've followed you on. Not only do you reveal so many historical details which the average passer by fails to see, but you always have an amusing tale to tell. I love the City & never fail to walk round it when in the UK. Your KZread walks are definately the best as the majority are totally boring with inexperienced guides. Keep up the good work. Pity you didn't find a pub! 👏🍾👍

What a good episode! "She Who Must Be Obeyed" and I are in California, but we have managed to save up enough to visit London about every other year. 2020 was an exception for obvious reasons, so your video visits now especially make us "homesick". We are so glad that you love London as much as we. Thank you.

What a really great video today, the London's wall was very interesting to learn about thank you. It was a little strange to see part of the London wall in the parking structure but it's nice to see they were trying to preserve it. Wish her in America we would try and save more of your history and really learn about it more.

I live near Fulton, MO and as so excited to hear about the move of the church from London. Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech was given there. I love how you inform me on London history and now my local history too.

I love the Barbican Center. A few years back a museum in it had an exhibit that I want to see. Had the hardest time trying to get in and and even more trouble exiting. Some how I ended up in a subterranean parking garage and had to follow the traffic out. I guess that the only way an American knows how to exit.

Jools. How about doing a vid in the 'footsteps of Samuel Pepys' ? From (Birth) Salisbury Court - St Olaves (Seething Lane) Lots of interesting narration to use there from the diary.

It would be so worth it, though. Pepys is just such an excellent source of relatively normal life in Restoration London, such a journey would be fitting! Just have to find a sack posset for the ending, and a proper "and so to bed".

Love it! have binged the whole channel throughout our various lockdowns, have really missed walking around London. That being said, keeping my eyes out for interesting street furniture in the local neighbourhood more now. There's a stink pipe sewage lamppost thing just outside my work! It's sad but this made me excited when i finally realised what the thing actually was😆 anyway thanks for another great walk Jools 👍

A delightful walk, brilliant as always! How surprising, however, for a talented thespian and singer to explore the Barbican without even a passing mention of music! The Barbican is, after all, the home of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama!
