London Overground’s NEW NAMES!

TfL and the London Mayor have decided to split the London Overground into six new lines on the iconic tube map. The TfL Three explore the Overground network, and explain the meanings of the names, and their thoughts on them, as they go.
Obviously it goes without saying, but given the references to women, ethnic minorities, and LGBT people that this discussion does inevitably bring up, prejudice of any sort is NOT welcome on this channel. Any comments we deem offensive will be deleted.

I live in Walthamstow and have honestly never referred to my local London Overground line as the Lea Valley line.

Love Hatch End Station, really quite nice, I'm not a fan of some of the names chosen, Windrush send Weaver do sound okay being honest but it always the North London Line, Watford DC and GOBLIN... also for out of context I can say I going to ride the Lionesses 😂

The Mildmay Mission Hospital has somewhat changed (in physical appearance) I cannot recall if it was named after the area (Mildmay Road) but the Mildmay Mission was one of many Christian non-estabilshed churches in the victorian era , and particulary went to cover the medical needs at an affordable cost of a poor part of east london, being pre - NHS. I recall people associated with it speaking at the Mission Hall I attended in the late 1960s in SW London when we had exchanges of speakers etc amongst a number of the evangelical allianced (TES) mission halls, mainly around London.

I think the Romford-Upmister line should be called the Havering line. If the point was to celebrate the development and community of Havering why not name the line after the borough? Especially since the line is completely in Havering.

No, they are stupid names. North London Line would be confusing for tourists and non-English speakers and Goblin is ridiculous and only excites transport nerds.

The Windrush docked at Tilbury, outside of London , and of course on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway

The Weaver Line should be at least two separate lines - Chingford should be a separate line, and you can argue either way about whether Enfield Town should be a separate line or a branch of the line that goes to Chushunt.

On the subject of re-naming, Hatch End Station was originally built (1842) as Pinner Station, but became Hatch End in 1997 after the Metropolitan Railway built it's own station in the middle of Pinner village. The name Hatch End refers to it being an entrance to the "Pinner Park" estate (farm). Perversely, the original Hatch End is actually adjacent to the next station, Headstone Lane.

I think Windrush, Mildmay and Weaver sound like proper line names and are quite good to be honest. Liberty sounds too American, Lioness is too much of a tongue twister and Suffragette just doesn't sound right, and there is some dodgy history behind the movement. People who get genuinley upset about something as silly as this are frankly pathetic

I don’t think there is any need to name the lines on the overground as the thinking in the minds of TFL has now gone bonkers and I think they need some mental health treatment.

The lefts solution to 'owning' the right, is to basically copy them when it comes to naming railway lines (pointless naming). You know what would have actually owned the right? Making it so commuters actually knew where they were going. Because people would like that and vote for more things like that.

Mate, all of the lines besides the Central and Victoria lines don't have names that tell you where they go, stop politicising the issue. The new names are alright and it seems to only be people in their 40's and 50's who get upset that TfL has acknowledged that black people and women exist.
