Over the weekend I took the plunge! I upgraded from a Logitech BRIO webcam to a Sony a5100.

    I have an a5100 on order, unfortunately so does the site I ordered them from lol. Hopefully they get more in soon. I'm anxious to get it! I have the same current set up, Brio at 1080p 60.

    Definitely upgrade your key lighting (the main lighting that goes on your face). Once you do that you'll get a better depth of field effect and more of a difference between you and the background. I'd look into the Elgato Key Light. Expensive for sure, but worth it.

    Already have 2 set up; they are what you see in this video. I upgraded to a Sigma 16mm 1.4 to achieve a greater depth of field and am really happy with the results.

    Apparently, those cameras have skin smoothing which can be disabled with a small digital zoom hack.

    The brio is running on some default automatic mode i guess? It’s white balance seems way off.

    to get more depth of field use a telescopic lens. It will give you that blur effect that you really want.

    NAWAF thank you!! Means a lot :) I did! I ended up getting a new lens - a Sigma 16 mm. It’s awesome. I’ll be making a new video soon to show the difference between the kit lens and an upgrade.

    Hey Driggsy, are you still using the a5100? I have one and plan on streaming soon, but I've heard that the camera will shut off after 30 mins, or whatever you have the "Pwr Save Start Time" set to. Have you noticed anything like this?

    Hi Habit! If you have a power adapter, you should be all set. While it is plugged into a power outlet, the camera will not shut off.

    Dang that difference... Only thing I'm not sure about the sony a5100 can it stay plugged in and record with obs or like a dslr do I have to buy a separate battery then keep it plugged in so it won't run of juice

    Thanks! Theoretically you could get multiple batteries and swap them out as you need to, but that would be cumbersome haha I would definitely recommend buying the official Sony power supply to keep it powered during use

    Hey Driggsy, I recently picked up the same camera. Im in the works of getting more and more equipment for it. My question is, is there a way to preview the 50fps that the camera supports? In recordings, I see that it works perfectly. But the preview when the camera is idling after a power-on is a low framerate. Is there a workaround? All help is appreciated! :)

    Hi Zey! Are you using a Camlink or Elgato HD60S? I would recommend deactivating the source, and reactivating it. I noticed sometimes my preview is a little funky, but the stream is okay.

    driggsy I actually managed to figure out the problem. I haven’t used a capture source yet, but I used a tv to simulate it. For the A5100, set the camera to NTSC, then select Movie mode, then manual exposure. Make sure you have your color settings set to your preference and make sure the frame rate is 60fps. I didn’t know it had to be in movie mode to output the 60fps. So I hope that helped anyone reading this

    I heard the Clear Zoom setting, whatever that is, solves the issue.

    The brio in your setup looked better then the sony. Sony is super fuzzy

    Hey driggsy, quick question here: How do you keep your Sony cam always on? Do you change batteries, or is there a way to power it via cable?

    Hi SHIBBY4K! It is connected via the Sony AC Power Adapter. Basically it’s a mock battery that slides right into the battery slot, and has an AC cable providing the power.

    ​@@SHIBBY4K​Here's the power adapter that I bought www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OBUJD0/ It looks like it's not available any more on Amazon, but searching for the product number might help you pull it up on another site. I would definitely recommend buying the official one. Some might say otherwise, but personally I would rather spend a few extra dollars buying one made by the company that makes the camera, than risk your investment to potential power issues down the road.     idk why, but for some reason I prefer the look the brio gives out. feels more natural... good video though, pretty much what I have been looking for.. how has the overheating been with the 5100?

    A question please, I have an ac adapter for the cam, what else do i have to do in the menu or whatever to keep it running, cause after 30 minutes the camera switches off......

    Michael Schibitschek in the menu there should be a setting to change auto-shutdown. Make sure that’s set to off!

    choks m this is the kit lens. I upgraded to the Sigma 16 mm shortly after I made this video. I’ll be putting out an update video soon!

    The A5100 have a micro HDMI port on it right. So, how are you connecting from the A5100 to the computer? What will happen if we only connect Micro HDMI from A5100 to the computer? I plan to live stream from my A5100 at my computer but I haven't really find the guideline to do that

    Mohd Qazi you will need a capture card, Elgato Cam Link is probably the safe option.

    You don't record on the sony. When its recording it over heats over a short time. You use an elgato or similar to capture the clean hdmi source. So the sony isnt recording so it won't over heat :D

    @@ZyphiriaIRL Not sure if you mean the software or the cam link. The cam link will work. If its the elgato screen capture software I don't think It will work. You still need something to take in the Clean HDMI source from the camera into the pc. I could be wrong but i am pretty certain the only way to get the video in is through HDMI with this camera. I hope that answers your question.

    I also own the sony a5100 with a camlink. Do you now also suffer from the Soft Skin effect? I don't get it deleted in the HDMI output. if I just record then I will. I have already switched off face detection, but the problem remains. maybe you have some advice greetings Mike

    How do connected to the computer? Just Micro HDMI was enough? I have issues getting my computer recognizing and streaming. I'm trying to use it for my online classes. Thanks!

    Dee you need a elgato capture card or similar. Elgato HD60 or cam link. They are so overpriced right now you should wait on the purchase.

    Mitty - Fotografie, kurzy a cestování I’ve heard it will overheat if you record directly to the SD card for a long period of time. When capturing just the output via HDMI, you should have no issue

    You do need some sort of way to capture the outcoming video feed. I'm using a HD60s because I had an extra one laying around, but a Cam Link is the typical solution.

    Johnny9 the a5100 certainly has issues with overheating when recording directly to the camera. Luckily, using the camera to stream doesn’t require you to record - you simply record the output of the video. I’ve only had 2 occasions where it has overheated on me. Both were on very hot summer days. Other than that, it has been great!

    Depth of field is all about the lens, be prepared to spend as much as the camera for the lens. You don’t need to but you will find that they don’t come cheap. You want that good glass! 16mm f/1.4 is what to all for

    Sony has more of a warmer saturation as opposed to the cooler on the Brio

    True!! One of the things I really like about going with this route is that all of my camera settings will save directly onto the camera, instead of relying on software or filters in OBS like they would with a typical webcam.

    @@driggsy idk about the Bose mixer but I'm sure Shure SM7B should do better. You are pretty quite and sound like you taking in a can. Need a bit more warmth to your voice setting too

    Weird, are you listening with headphones? I'm personally happy with how it sounds. I also asked my community tonight if they thought my mic sounded good, and they all agreed that it did. Thanks for the feedback though!

    @@driggsy u need to add some bass even a simple 3db increase on the low end would do so much you sound kinda thin aka lack of any bass

    So far I've only had it overheat 2 times since I made the switch in April. These 2 times happened in the middle of the summer, when my room was really hot. I haven't had any issues since then. Next summer, I plan on snagging a small clamp fan to attach to my monitor arm and direct the airflow at my camera to prevent this from happening.

    White balance probably needs to be set, that's all. Usually, cameras ask you to hold a white piece of paper or cardboard in front of the camera while you set the manual white balance. Even better, a large white piece of poster board in your chair and zoom in to that. This will take into account the lighting at the place where you sit.
