The way I figure it, in the movie version of LOGAN'S RUN the lifeclocks change colors every 7 & 1/2 years, being CLEAR from birth through the 7 & 1/2th year, YELLOW from then until the end of the 15th year, then GREEN until the end of the 22 & 1/2th year, and finally RED until Lastday, whereupon it blinks RED-BLACK-RED-BLACK (etc.) for 24 hours until it goes totally BLACK, and one then is officially a Runner. But for Sandmen it's different. Sandmen don't wear clothing which matches their Age bracket. They are 'born' as Sandmen, being the offspring of Sandmen -- as Logan 5 says to Francis 7, pointing at his own Next-in-Line, whom he refers to as Logan 6. "It's not every day that they authorize a new Sandman," he says. Logan was "Red-Six" when the Computer 'Retrograms' him, forcing his lifeclock to begin blinking 4 years too soon. That means that Logan -- and undoubtedly every Sandman -- is a Sandman, on Red, for his 3rd decade, from 21 through 30. Before that, he would have to go through the CLEAR then YELLOW then GREEN phases for a total of 20 years, spending 6 years and 8 months on average at each Color-phase. If this is so, then they spend less time in the Nursery than an average Citizen, and go YELLOW at the age of 13 years + 4 months (13 + 1/3rd years). Remember, each 'Year of the City' has 12 months, named after the Signs of the Zodiac -- "Capricorn 15, Year of the City Twenty-Two Seventy Four" etc. An "authorized" Sandman is indoctrinated and trained to be a wholly-devoted servant of the City, becoming trained in all sorts of ways to prepare for his 10-year career actually hunting down and terminating Runners. In a LOGAN'S RUN fan-fic project I've been plotting out, the calendar is instituted by the Computer when it imposes its 'logical' solutions to the problems faced by the City regarding Overpopulation, Pollution, and so on. The City, built to safeguard the lives of its privileged people in the build-up to a Catastrophe that ravages the entire world in the year 2072, exists under human control until 2116 -- i.e. for 44 years -- and the day we call Saturday, 29 February 2116 is followed by the day the Computer calls 1 Aries YC 2116 (where 'YC' = "Year of the City"), and each of the 12 'months' are made to be 30 days each, each year being exactly 360 days long. The climate control under the domes makes the 'seasons' springlike year-round. So, each lifetime ends up being 10,800 days, the 10,800th being Lastday. One side-note: When Logan's about to be assassinated by Jessica's 'friends' at Arcade -- near the 'Hand' -- he's being monitored secretly by the Computer that had sent him on this Top Secret mission to find and destroy Sanctuary. The Computer had discovered that the 'Sanctuary Line' group had found a way to teleport Runners to various locations throughout the City -- including into Cathedral, making use of the teleporter where Food is sent in, to feed the Cubs. The Computer finds a way to Retrogram an unwitting woman who actually IS a 'Green' -- forcing her lifeclock to begin blinking, and forcing her clothing to change color from Green to Red (that's one futuristic element to their clothing, they automatically change color to match their new lifeclock color). She insists, "I'm nowhere near thirty -- I should be Green -- Green!" The Computer sent her there and then activated Logan's gizmo to send HIM to Cathedral -- partly to get him away from the assassins closing in on his position at Arcade . . .

A decade earlier, Jessica's outfit (or lack of) in the movie would never have made it past Standards & Practices. However, the 70s began paving the way for a more relaxed standard regarding characters' wardrobe, conduct and language. The swear word in "Jaws" stood out to audiences, but of course would be standard today.

The costumes and special effects are great and even interesting as to how the carousel in the TV show was just with the bodies changing colors while in the Movie the bodies blew up after turning to fire too.Yes both budget wise as well as otherwise was why they had to change the Carousel scheme from The Movie to look different as on The TV Show.

I’ve seen this series and I wondered about the lack of hand crystals. I figured it was due to budget, but it didn’t seem like it would be that costly. In the episode with Nicholas Hammond, a Sandman is shown putting his tracking device next to the hand of a terminated runner to identify him, implying there was some kind of life clock/ID there. Yes I am a Logan’s Run nerd 😁Thank you for making these videos!

Thanks for making this video. The Sandman costumes are different in the film and the TV series. In the movie they wear a two-piece top; a turtleneck with a kind of vest overlying it. In the television show the movie sandman outfits proved unworkable and were unbearably hot. You can see them sweltering in the movie Sandman costumes a few times. They ultimately changed the top into just a tunic. Also, I believe Logan's boots in the show were adapted from scuba diving boots. Almost all of the women's costumes from the film were destroyed as they were so fine/sheer, and many simply fell apart as they were held together with pins. Most did not survive the production. Most Sandman costumes that come up for auction are from the TV show, and not the film. Only a handful of sandman costumes from the film survive. One was auctioned this year.

Okay. Well? Since you asked, how about..."Wonder Woman" starring Lynda Carter. Her costumes could have some interesting details. Like the harness she had to wear under the costume, for jumping between buildings and over fountains. I understand she did 90% of her own stunts.

Very well presented. I was going to mention the lack of underwear, but since you already went into that, I'll skip it. However I do wonder if that original costume test you mentioned still exists. The TV series, which I saw when it was new and have since watched many times on DVD, was excellent. The costumes were all good, especially the one Heather Menzies wore. REM was one of my favourite characters, so I have always loved his outfit. Overall the costumes were good, and fitted a Science Fiction show of this sort.

I think that the costume choices seen in "Logan's Run" were similar to those seen in Gerry Anderson's "U.F.O." and "Buck Rogers." That being that the '70s lifestyle would continue into the far future. This lead me to assume that the costumes were items acquired from commercial sources, with few alterations. The one problem I saw was that they were too colorful. While this was not that much of a problem in "Buck Rogers," in "U.F.O." and "Logan's Run" the stories had darker subject matters. These shows should have had more diffused lighting, with more lived in costumes. Especially in "Logan's Run," though the characters would have started out in bright clothing, by at least half way through the series, the characters should have started to wear clothing that was more akin to want would be worn in cross country road trips.

Hi Rodney, thanks for commenting. I'm pretty certain that like the sandman and the city of domes citizens, aside from the ones that were repurposed from the movie were not off the rack but custom made for the show.

I have the impression that the Sandman costumes in the series were simplified, with the gray collar and chest band sewn to the tunic. There are some shots in your screen grabs where it does look like the two- piece top ala the movie so I wonder if that might be tied to… wear and tear on the movie costume? I could see them deciding that a one piece top might have a better ‘look’ in action shots. I dunno. Am I seeing it wrong? Some of those shots, that top is pretty tight and just not looking layered.

The show looked good on DVD and the movie looks even better on Blu-ray, but maybe Warner will issue the show own Blu-ray and movie in 4K. Gerry Anderson's U.F.O. and the Gil Gerard BUCK ROGERS look great on Blu-ray and ROGERS still shocks me in how good that looks in HD. Still need to catch up with the original BATTLESTAR: GALACTICA on Blu-ray, with other sci-fi shows I think have great, distinct costumes include STAR MAIDENS, BLAKE 7, the Tom Baker DR. WHO, Canadian series THE STARLOST, SPACE: 1999, SAPPHIRE AND STEEL, MOONBASE 3, ARK II, SPACE ACADEMY, JASON OF STAR COMMAND, PHOENIX FIVE and a little of the 1975 show SKY. Most of these shows are underrated and too many unknown or forgotten too much. thanks for the solid video!

If you like unusual sci-fi costumes, take a look at Teenagers from Outer Space (1959). The movie is easy to find online. Low budget so they relied heavily on duct tape for the space teenagers costumes.
