Google decided I needed to watch this and I'm glad I did. I worked for the BNSF for 43 years as a switchman/brakeman/conductor and pulled the pin in Nov. 2009. Stayed a little longer cause my wife was 2 years and 4 months younger. Congrats on your retirement and I hope it's going good. Like an old conductor I used to brake for said after he retired..............It's the best job I ever had.

@@kansasstatealerting2874 I should have said I retired from BNSF with 43 years of service. I hired out on the Santa Fe on July 7, 1966. The Santa Fe merged with BN in 1995. When I retired I still considered myself Santa Fe, we had the Transcon and 70 MPH intermodal trains while the BN had 55 MPH coal loads and emptys. Probably wrong to feel this way, but I always felt Santa Fe was the elite railroad, high speed, low drag. 😎😁😁😁

Congratulations on your well earnt retirement Mike. Left the train driving caper after 20 years a bit over a year ago myself. Miss some parts of the job as well as the people but not the night work. Have joined a heritage railway not far from home and I'm looking forward to driving trains for fun.

I would hope it’s mostly night owls that work for the railroad. My dad is an early riser and I have no idea how he manages it. He doesn’t actually work the trains, but it’s still horrific hours.

I can tell you really enjoyed your job, It seems like the railroad job was the best suited for you and I'm sure you've had a great experience working for B & O and CSX. I live on the LCL Subdivision formerly the L & N, which is just south of Cincinnati and the B & O sub division. You further my desire to work for the railroad and getting to see your experience shows the job of a locomotive engineer in the first person.
