Or in this case he risked the lives of his buddy, dog and the potential rescuers. You can have fun in ways that don't result in your death and endangering others.

@@AshlynOne Actually, having studied meteorology, and a current Severe Storm Spotter for the NWS, I do. Now if you want to be a fearful wimp and take no risks, that is your choice. I would have gone righthrough the vortex. The greatest danger here was lightning.

Maybe if you were in a small yacht, but that little speedboat could easily have flipped and left them capsized in the middle of the ocean with no life jackets. Was out fishing in our Bay one summer, a waterspout was too close to us , boat was drifting , was ok but my brother-in-law got sick as a dog ! It could have capsized the boat at the right angle , ours anyway I don’t know about this guy . At least we didn’t intentionally go through it . For the seconds it lasted I wouldn’t want to do it again.

Like how would he have even known that? The Fujita scale rank is determined by how much damages were done to building structures caused by the twister. It’s measuring wind strength. Not size. So where are the buildings and structural damages in the ocean to make that call? What Kevin was doing was already stupid but if he ended up being wrong and the tornado was actually an F5…Adiós.

Those things are harmless out at sea they are basically stationary and I would not even say those were 70mph maybe 30mph at most

water spouts are basically dirt devils of water, he'd only be in danger if he swam through it, its literally spinning rain, not even the winds are fast enough to knock him over. I'd put the dog in a more secure position though, just to make sure they dont jump out or nothing.

​@@NemeanLion- That's not true. If a tornado on land can reach EF5 speeds so can a tornado on water. Again there are different types of waterspouts. Some are like landspouts which form from the surface to the cloud. These ones are the most common and are very weak. The other type are tornadic which usually form from a supercell over the ocean. These ones are tornadoes but over water so they are called waterspouts.

In medieval times boats avoided waterspouts because they had the potential to damage the masts and leave you stranded at sea.

Less dangerous than land tornadoes since theres usually no debris in it

i hope the tax payers don't have to foot the bill if he needed coastal guard to rescue him one day.

While Waterspouts have the same appearance as a tornado they are more common and don’t have the same force - most of them would be rated less than an F0 ......just a guy with an apparent midlife crisis lol.

important to note that a tornado's F/EF rating is not how "strong" the tornado is, but rather related to estimated wind speed and how much DAMAGE the tornado does. many very strong tornadoes that happen out over open fields where there is nothing to damage receive low F/EF ratings. so no, you can't just tell a tornado's rating/risk by looking at it. this was a very silly and dangerous thing to do, and by someone very uninformed. the reason they're making a big deal out of it in this news segment is to make sure other equally as uninformed people don't make the same mistake, thinking there is no risk attached. you would be putting both yourself and any rescue/body retrieval attempts in danger, too! glad he and everyone onboard, including the dog, were okay, though! it does, admittedly, look like a lot of fun lmao.

Fair weather waterspouts, if you don’t enter the actual vortex and your boat is decent, are not very dangerous. He’s absolutely right that they are EF0 strength and max windspeeds usually no more than the 70mph range. Still not something to laugh at, but yeah not the massive risk they look like

An F0 waterspout above water is literally no danger at all. It can't pick you or the boat up, it can't rip your limbs off, and it's above water. "Underestimate it"? They were perfectly fine.

Some storms can create very strong waterspouts and many people, fishermen, tourists ect. have died due to this phenomenon. nobody must think it's fine to any severe nature phenomenon

Waterspouts are generally harmless to boats.
