Living with PTSD after War (Combat PTSD, Bipolar, and Borderline Personality Disorder)

Justin is a veteran diagnosed with combat PTSD, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Living with these mental health disorders has strained many of his personal relationships. Justin is now in therapy with the goal of ending generational trauma and providing his daughter with a happy childhood. He wants others to know that just like going to the doctor for checkups on your body, it's okay to do the same for the mind.

Thank you Justin for sharing your story. I know it will help many people out there. During our discussion Justin told me one of the best things he did for his mental health is quit alcohol. I asked him what hobby he replaced drinking with and he told me "creating art and music". In the description of this video I put a link to Justin's music for those who would like to check it out.

You’re not alone brother. I served in Iraq in 2015, and I joined to pay for school and attain health care at the age of 27. I was a music teacher and musician previously. I have always been a deeply empathetic human. I’ve been home from war for 7 years, rated for PTSD from deployment, and there’s really no coming back from war. Nothing can prepare you for it, and nothing can bring you back. Stay strong bro, you got this, all of us who’ve shared the experience of war are behind you. You’re not alone.

I understand so much about what you said, I also have borderline personality disorder. People also need to understand that not all disabilities are visible. Continue with the therapy, it was so helpful. Justin you might benefit from a service dog, they can also be owner trained, they can intuitively sense what is going on both physical and mentally and help you during an episode. I am currently with my third service dog. I wish you the best of luck in your life.

Thank you, Justin, for being an advocate for therapy. So many people, especially men, don't seek help because they think they'll be viewed as weak. That stigma needs to stop. Theray is so damn important. It took my fiance years to get up the courage to see one. He's still seeing the same same one every week and is seeing the benefits. I have C-PTSD and severe depression, which is a whammy of a combo. I'm, unfortunately, unresponsive to antidepressants thanks to being on so many different ones since i was 15. I'm 41 now. My last hope is Ketamine. I understand a lot of what he's going through. Abandoment issues still haunt me thanks to my past traumas. My therapist doesn't think i have BPD, though i do have some symptoms. She says it's just related to my trauma. One thing she said that i thought was odd was that, in her experience, people with BPD tend to be narcissistic. Justin here doesn't display that trait at all, unless he's in a manic state, but that comes with being bipolar. So it's interesting that she has that view. Of the 9 traits of BPD, narcissism isn't one of them. Anyway, this was yet another great video, Chris. Keep up the good work.

As a German/European, I want to address something that has been always on my mind, when talking about the military service and military culture in the US. I think the "thank you for your service" attitude and celebration of the military service in American media and elsewhere enables these institutions which do the "carrot dangling" of the army with healthcare and education, as you mentioned it. A more critical view might help highlighting what is wrong with the military as an institution that lures Americans in who can't afford the too expensive healthcare and education system.

These type of talks are what we need in society. We need deep talks where we care about each other and the world around us. I feel like so many people are numb to the world we live and don’t explore too far from the screens in front of their face. Channels like this is the only way to reach those ignoring what is going on around them outside of social media.

The willingness to tell pieces of your story to so many people is a masterful example of you being not only comfortable with vulnerability, but welcoming it with open arms and living alongside it. That’s huge and you deserve to give yourself so much credit for that (and for other people to celebrate that too). I have bipolar disorder and ptsd as well. What a journey! Thank you for opening up and sharing! When I was diagnosed, I felt so alone, and still do. I don't know anyone with bpd. There isn't any handbook on how to deal with it or what to expect. I definitely went down the path of hurting myself. I would feel so depressed and numb, I literally put my entire hand in a boiling 5 gallon pot of oil. I barely felt it. If you know anyone with bipolar disorder. Please show grace. Research what it is we go through. We have to deal with the instability of each day. It's so frustrating. For me, I try really hard to stay on top of my meds and share with those close to me how I'm feeling. When I'm really depressed, if I'm having a hard time doing things, it's not because I'm lazy, it's just so hard. Sometimes I can overcome it and sometimes I can't. But, we try. We try really hard! So much love out there to all of my BP homies out there!!!

Justin is very articulate and his self awareness is really commendable. 🙌🏼He clearly works hard on himself and seems like a great person. It must be pretty exhausting to deal with this stuff, very brave of him to deal with it all head on and talk about it. Great interview. Best of luck to him ❤
