I founded out I have chronic hepatitis b when I was 16, but it started to affect when I turned 17. The condition got worse and worse because they suspected me diagnosing with liver cancer later on but thank you my liver didn’t break nor did it have any scar. Hopefully we will get over it with! Best of luck to everyone out there! ;)

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, feeling tired is a side effect of the liver not working well. Make sure you talk to your doctor about your day-to-day symptoms when you have your six-monthly check-ups. Interestingly, people living with viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and/or hepatitis C) also experience more mental health side effects such as depression and anxiety than the general population. This is because the liver works to regulate your hormones, and if the liver isn't working well (due to hepatitis), the outcome is an imbalance, meaning you feel depressed or anxious. Again talk to your doctor as they may be able to provide medication or a referral for some support.

@@HepatitisQueensland Thankyou for your reply I'm seeing my consultant tomorrow for my liver and today I'm seeing a Gynecology for lichen sclerosis. I also have a underactive thyroid and I'm always tired. Do they aggravate each other also as the consultants here in the UK don't seem to really have much time and my glands are always swollen in my neck, underarms and groin if really low. Please could you advise me again to a solution as all my family have died of cancer young, my partner died and I have a dog to look after as I couldn't have children due to ectopic pregnancy and cervical problems, miscarriages etc. I look forward to a reply 🙏

@@Bobsbud100 While we can't comment on your medical conditions, we can encourage you to keep your appointments and if needed seek further support if you're not feeling heard. As people living with viral hepatitis can also experience more mental health symptoms, it's a good idea to seek support for this as well. A mental health professional may also support you with the other challenges you have described. Reaching out to a local support service like the British Liver Trust could also be of benefit britishlivertrust.org.uk/. We wish you all the best.

Thanks for sharing your story Mack. How your body reacts to hepatitis B depends on how old you are when you come into contact with the virus. 90% of newborn babies with hep B mothers, will go on to have chronic hep B if they don't receive a vaccination at birth. 50% of children will develop chronic hep B if exposed to the virus. For adults, 95% will clear the virus and not develop chronic hepatitis B. We encourage everyone to be tested as people with hepatitis B will often have no symptoms even if they have the virus.

Thanks for getting in touch. Being diagnosed with hepatitis B can be a scary and overwhelming experience. Many people live with not knowing how they contracted the virus, so you are not alone there. Understanding how to manage it long-term is often the part that you need to focus on! Having hepatitis B is manageable and there is a lot you can do to take control of your health and your life. A healthy diet, not drinking alcohol, and exercising regularly will have an impact on how well your body controls the virus. Over time the amount of virus in your blood will change which is why it is very important to have regular check-ups to check your levels. Thanks for your great question. If you are applying for an Australian permanent visa, the Department of Home Affairs will ask you to arrange a health examination, which may include a blood test for hepatitis. If you are applying for a temporary visa, whether or not you will need a health examination will depend on how long you want to stay in Australia, what your intended activities are, and the type of visa you are applying for. If you're undergoing a health examination, the Department of Home Affairs states that you must disclose your medical history and details of any known medical condition. Hi Monstaa, thanks for getting in touch and for your question. In Australia, people living with hepatitis B and hepatitis C have rights that protect them from being discriminated against. There are only a handful of reasons why you would need to disclose your hepatitis B status, this includes healthcare workers, blood/organ donors, joining the Defence Force, and sometimes for insurance/superannuation. If a blood spill occurs in any workplace there is standard occupational health and safety guidance to treat any blood as potentially infectious, regardless of whether the injured person has disclosed that they have a blood-borne virus. This can be a complex topic so please feel free to call our Infoline on 1800 437 222 for a confidential discussion, or you can visit our website for more information: www.hepqld.asn.au/living-with-hepatitis

Hi, you have raised two important points here about living well with hepatitis B. Tenofovir and other hepatitis B medications are lifelong treatments, so it is important that you don’t stop taking them, even if you finish a script. Also as you are living with hepatitis B you should be having checkups every 6 months, to monitor your liver health and the hep B virus in your blood. If you don’t have an appointment with your doctor planned, it might be a good idea to contact them to make another appointment for a checkup and a new script.

If you don't know whether or not you are immune, your doctor can do a blood test to check. If you have completed a course of vaccination against Hepatitis B (through an approved schedule), you are considered immune as long as your anti-HBs titre measures as being >10 mIU/mL. The best way to know is to talk to your doctor.

People who live with hepatitis B often experience a range of symptoms including stomach or liver pain, loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, fever, dark urine, joint pain, or jaundice. If you are experiencing any concerns with your hep B, you should see your doctor. Having regular six monthly check ups when you are living with hep B is also very important. We have a treatment directory on our website called HEPnav if you need to find a local health care provider - www.hepqld.asn.au/hep-nav/

@Eric Lewis The only way to know for sure if you are living with hepatitis B (or any type of hepatitis) is to have a blood test. People who are living with hepatitis B live healthy, happy lives. The most important thing to remember is having regular six monthly check ups is important. There is a link between hepatitis B and liver cancer but having check ups regularly can pick up changes early so the doctors can start you on treatment to reduce the risk. Not everyone with hepatitis B will need treatment, in actual fact most people won’t - check out some of our factsheets about hepatitis B. See Living with hepatitis on our website for some great tips for staying healthy if you are living with hepatitis.

Hi Alexei, the most common medications that are prescribed for someone with hepatitis B are Entecavir (Baraclude) and Tenofovir (Viread). Both of these medications come in tablets. They are very effective and have very few side effects. Another treatment that is used less commonly is pegylated interferon which is given as an injection in the abdomen once per week for six to twelve months. This medication can have side effects and can interfere with other medications. It's important to discuss your treatment options with your doctor so you can make an informed choice about what is best for you.

Hi Sanchit, thanks for the great question. Hepatitis B is a manageable condition and there are ways to protect yourself and those close to you. Hepatitis B is passed through blood-to-blood contact, unprotected sexual contact and from a mother with hepatitis B to her newborn baby. The best protection for those close to you is to receive the hepatitis B vaccination (three injections over a six month period). For those who are unvaccinated practice safe sex and don’t share items that may have traces of blood on them like tweezers, razors or toothbrushes. Medication is used to help treat hepatitis B when the virus is active. It's difficult to know when the virus is active as there are not always any signs or symptoms. Only your doctor can help you decide when treatment it is right for you. This is why it is important to get check-ups every six months. @@nunalol465 Thanks for reaching out Beth. The thing to remember about hepatitis B is that it can be in a ‘silent’ phase - this means that it isn’t causing damage to your liver - which would be represented in your normal ALT. However, the virus is always there and you must keep having check ups every 6 months, and doing everything you can to keep these levels low. Not drinking alcohol, not smoking, eating well and exercise are all really important for your liver heath. Check out some of the resources on our website about the Phases of Chronic hepatitis B. If you partner does not have hepatitis B - they would need to be vaccinated. For adults this means three injections over a six month period.

Thanks for the great question. There is no reason someone living with hepatitis B cannot marry and reproduce and there are ways to protect yourself and your loved ones. Hepatitis B is passed through blood-to-blood contact, unprotected sexual contact and from a mother with hepatitis B to her newborn baby. The best protection for your loved ones is to receive the hepatitis B vaccination (three injections over a six month period). For those who are unvaccinated practice safe sex and don’t share items that may have traces of blood on them like tweezers, razors or toothbrushes. There are also ways to significantly reduce the likelihood of a mother passing the virus to her baby at birth. It’s best to talk to your doctor about vaccinations for your baby at birth. If you are living with hepatitis B your doctor can assess whether you need to take medication to help reduce the virus before the baby is born. Not everyone with hepatitis B will need to take medication, only your doctor can help you decide when it is right for you. This is why it is important to get check-ups every six months. If you would like any more info please take a look at our website www.hepqld.asn.au or call our free Infoline on 1800 437 222.

Hi Jemar, thanks for reaching out. Living with a chronic illness can be upsetting and overwhelming. While new scientific research in treating and curing chronic illnesses is occurring all the time we don't know how far away a cure is for hepatitis B. Though it's not a cure there is however treatment for hepatitis B than can help fight the virus and slow its ability to damage your liver. It's very important to have regular check-ups and develop healthy habits which will also help you focus on what you can control to help manage your fears and your health. Hi Ngurah, thanks for the great question. You can get hepatitis B if infected blood or body fluids get into your blood, or through unprotected sex without a condom with a partner who has hep B. Hepatitis C is a little bit different as you can only get it if your blood comes into contact with infected blood. You cannot get hepatitis B or C from saliva, hugging, kissing, or sharing food and plates. The situation you have described of coming into contact with infected blood with your skin intact does not sound like it would be likely to transmit the hepatitis virus. However, if you are concerned you can ask your doctor for a test to check if you have the virus. The best protection from hepatitis B is to be vaccinated. While there is no vaccination for hepatitis C, in most cases it can be treated successfully with medication.

Hi Akash and thanks for your question. My apologise in the late reply. A hepatitis B infection can result in either an acute infection or a chronic infection. When a person is first infected with the hepatitis B virus, it is called an "acute infection" (or a new infection). Most healthy adults that are infected do not have any symptoms and are able to get rid of the virus without any problems. Some adults are unable to get rid of the virus after six months and they are diagnosed as having a "chronic infection." A simple blood test can diagnose an acute or chronic hepatitis B infection. Thanks for your great question. No, hepatitis B does not transmit by kissing. The ways you can get hep B are blood-to-blood contact, unprotected sexual contact, and from a mother with hepatitis B to her newborn baby (vertical transmission). Hi Bharati, I'm glad you reached out. If you are living with hepatitis B your doctor can assess whether you need to take medication to help reduce the virus before the baby is born. Not everyone with hepatitis B will need to take medication, only your doctor can help you decide when it is right for you. There are also ways to significantly reduce the likelihood of passing the virus to your baby at birth. All babies in Australia who are born to mothers who are hepatitis B positive are vaccinated within 12 hours of birth. It is really important that these vaccinations occur as it reduces the baby’s risk of developing chronic hepatitis B from 95% to approximately 5%. You can find more information on our website here www.hepqld.asn.au/hepatitis-b/#pregnancy. You can also call our free Infoline on 1800 437 222.

Thanks for the great question Sirivella.
