Living with an MG4 51 Excite

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What's it like to live with the base model MG4 and drive it every day? Is it convenient to drive long distances? What little annoyances are there?
All these questions are answered in this week's video as Gav puts this affordable, electric hatchback through its paces.
If you missed the first video, be sure to check it out here: • MG4 Excite 51: New Zea...
And if you're interested in the fast charger installed in Gav's garage, check it out here: • Evnex E2 wall charger ...
But most importantly, if you're keen on cutting your carbon footprint, come and join us at Ecotricity, which is now New Zealand's only climate positive electricity provider! That means by switching today, you're actually turning back the clock on Climate Change, while saving money in the process.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not! Ecotricity is real, with really affordable electricity, thanks to it being purely renewable.
Head to www.ecotricity.co.nz and chuck in your address to see how much money & carbon you can save right now. It's that easy and it makes a real, positive difference for the next generation.

I purchased this car today, same spec. We do road trips a handful of times a year and realised the 51kw would be enough because we stop every 1.5 hours when driving for at least 15 minutes.

Another brilliant episode, I lived (actually born in Patea) near here and was there at the end of 2020 and the wind farm could been seen easily from the Patea Beach area. I believe this is the way to go, given the area the electricity should be produced close to where it's needed, the energy losses be transmitting it over large distances can be significant, lots of power probably used here as a very dense diary farm area in South Taranaki.

It's definitely cheaper if you are lucky enough to be able to charge the car at home.. in Europe public charging is 0.70c (NZ$1.25)/kWh. It would cost €66.02 (NZ$118.08) to do the whole trip. On a petrol hybrid with a consumption of 6.5l/100km it costs €61.30(NZ$109.65) to do the same trip. This is with the current price of petrol of €1.80/l (NZ$3.21). Unfortunately at the moment, with the price of EVs, it's just not worth it, unless you have a garage at home. Also where i live, electricity is still very much generated with fossil fuels. In terms of CO2 emissions, there is very little difference at all. I really think EVs are cool.. but there is still much to be done before i would ever consider buying one.

350 km WLTP range is about 310 km real world. Next given that (in Europe) public chargers on motorways are about 40 to 50 km apart you need to keep around 40 km in your back pocket just in case the charger you arrive at is not working for some reason. The real world workable range is now down to 270 km. Next if we're traveling at motorway speeds energy consumption is about 20%+ higher than than mixed driving - so now we're down to about 210 km real world range, or about 1/3rd of a pretty normal ICE vehicle. When you don't lug around a big battery 50kW is plenty fast. The battery is 51kWh anyway and can only go higher than 80kW (officially 88kW) on the best conditions, so on a 50kW you don't loose much that much time anyway. There is also the added benefit of those lower echelon of chargers, they are usually much cheaper and looked down at from other EV owners so less likely to be busy, and for the longevity of the battery on top of it being LFP already, charging at less than 1C shouldn't degrade the battery at all. The only thing the 51kWh model could really do better would be on AC charging, being stuck with single phase instead of a 22kW three phases of the MG4s with NMC batteries really hurts. Here in France a lot of supermarkets offer a free hour of 22kW 3 phases AC charging if you have their loyalty program card.

As the owner of a MG4, I find your comment quite laughable. The build quality is very good actually. It's a new car on the market, so there's no way you can tell its long term reliability at the moment.
