Living Untethered with Michael Singer

Fritzi Horstman interviews Michael Singer about his phenomenal books and perspective about becoming untethered, letting go and "making it nice in there."
Michael A. Singer is the author of #1 New York Times bestseller The Untethered Soul and New York Times bestsellers The Surrender Experiment and Living Untethered, which have been published worldwide. He had a deep inner awakening in 1971 while working on his doctorate in economics and went into seclusion to focus on yoga and meditation. In 1975, he founded Temple of the Universe, a now long-established yoga and meditation center where people of any religion or set of beliefs can come together to experience inner peace. He is also the creator of a leading-edge software package that transformed the medical practice management industry, and founding CEO of a billion dollar public company whose achievements are archived in the Smithsonian Institution. Along with his nearly five decades of spiritual teaching, Michael has made major contributions in the areas of business, education, healthcare, and environmental protection.

Thank you. 10 years in prison for betraying the ones I love. I'm not supposed to find happiness, but I have, I have friends and home. I let go of my past and those behaviors. They are not me today.

I also had a genuine transformation from a scared, scarred, selfish and addicted a-hole to a simply peaceful life. I found Singer when my fiancé died suddenly and traumatically - I was ready to end my own life when the algorithm on YT sent him my way. I’m not in less pain and I still experience deep regret for who I used to be but facing these dark corners of my life has given me a capacity for joy and gratitude that was hidden from me.

I must have listened to this interview about 20 times so far. I've loved Michael Singer's teachings after reading each book as it was published: Untethered Soul, Surrender Experiment, and Living Untethered. I've been practicing the teachings from Living Untethered for months now since it came out. I saw probably every one of Michael's interviews and have been listening to his website recordings lately as well. I followed Yogananda about 50 years also. I'm delighted, Fritzi and Michael, to see you together in this video. The common ground that you all have, working with prison inmates, is something we don't see every day. Seven years ago, I was a student in an online meditation and study group of about 10 of us that included a prison inmate in Georgia. He'd been in a gang when he was young and shot and killed a another kid. The study group held a weekly zoom meditation and discussion group where we heard engrossing stories about his life as a dharma and meditation teacher to fellow prisoners. His perspective on life struck me profoundly: what it's like to be inside and possibly remain inside the rest of his life, his personal journey growing into a spiritual teacher, his difficulties of trusting in the universe from inside a place where you must watch your back. His presence in our class opened my eyes and heart to his unforgettable predicament. As I age, it seems miraculous that I could still be learning this much at this point. I'm sure many others feel the same way. The past few years have been challenging for so many.

When we feel stressed, we may have a pretty good idea of what our most painful samskaras are. Inner thorns become most painful because of resistance within ourselves. For me, it was this attitude of the unfairness of life and how much energy I'd already expended trying to deal with it. The sheer depth of my psychic pain prevented me from progressing beyond it. My partner quit working at age 45 after he got laid off and was never able to work again. 25 years had gone by since then. We both had experienced childhood trauma passed down from traumatized parents including depression and physical health issues. The way our pattern would go was... I would trigger my partner when I talked about my work stress and why wasn't he able to help out by working, his angry reaction to my stress would trigger me, reminding me of my father belittling me as a child. As a long-time meditator, I began working with my inner thorns using Michael A. Singer's process just because he helped me understand how to do that where no one else had before. I never understood how I was using distraction and repression to bury my anger and pain. Instead of pushing my emotion away or acting out of frustration, I began to sit and observe my emotions without judgement (witness consciousness) numerous times. I observed the discomfort, telling myself I can handle whatever discomfort it brings me. I reminded myself to relax my bodily tension and trust that the emotions or thoughts would pass in their own time, and allowed it all to move through me without my intervention or manipulation. I used this technique to work with... . Facing my need for self-care, which must always come first. I can back off from always having to obsessively be perfect in my work. I can take time to jog or walk 15 minutes before, during and after work, prepare a healthy breakfast and lunch, prepare for sleep by not skipping mantra and meditation, journaling gratitude and what good came of my day (even if it was simply making my bed). . Take a few deep breaths, observe my breath a couple of times between meals, thinking my mantra then as well, thinking kind thoughts, considering how I can help others. . Wishing compassion and well-being for all and forgiveness toward all.

16:25 we do this all the time. "I don't think I like what I thought you said." Basically bothering yourself over something you are not even sure you heard right. Then later you get to the point where you don't bother yourself over knowing you don't like what you know someone said. And eventually the like or preference goes away and you go with what he says elsewhere is the goal to be the only preference you have: I prefer things are the way that they are. It does not mean you don't do anything about it but you surrender to the fact that it is the way it is and do not endlessly bother yourself about it but simply ask yourself what can I do to make it better and if there is nothing for you to do, don't take others actions personally.

I nearly didn't want to watch when I heard the mention of prison as I felt pain on thinking about what life is like for them and so glad I released my discomfort and watched on, You do great work 🙏 and I feel so healed and heard in the interview and most importantly I know that there is great living to be done for me releasing and surrendering to the present as I create both a wonderful past and future from it. These bars that are on my window I know so very well My life in living bondage from the depths of eternal hell. By opening up my eyes, to my amazement what I see This day is what I make of it, its truly up to me. In gazing at the vastness of my great big prison yard Perhaps I find a purpose and a meaning not too hard. The seen is now upon me to start a brighter day This idle time of prison life begins to melt away. My days a little brighter as I watch the morning sky To deny my newfound vision I'd be telling you a lie. Perhaps I'm not in prison as bad as it did seem There are no bars, there is no fence, it's nothing but a dream. I'm breaking out of prison this prison in my mind, I feel that I'm more thankful and more loving of mankind..." I wrote this one morning while watching the sunrise over a prison(physical-mental) in north FL. It only Perhaps took 5-10 minutes to jot it down from a (moment in the now). Have a blessed day and do the best with what you have in the moment to the best of your ability and leave the rest to the Universe. 🙏 namaste... Michael

Of course, and thank you-Compassion in Action. You may share the poem with the Universe. To my understanding that's what we are here for, to experience (my perspective), the good, the bad, the ugly etc. From my personal experience - not sure I would enjoy the sunshine as much without the rain-?- I do have a few more similar like poems I've written during one of my so called physical incarceration s, perhaps I could share if you wish. One final thought from a smart individual. "A human being is a part of the whole, called by us Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself part of liberation, and a foundation for inner security ". Albert Einstein. Namaste 🙏 Michael...

When i get triggered and feel charged i go within and find the sensation. I watch it and allow it to do its thing. When i do this the supressed emotions are released. When i react outwardly then i strengthen the suppressed emotion just to have it try again.

Trauma is way more than something that bothers you. I agree. Being Abused is trauma. Not the same as my tendencies.

What about people who suffered terrible abuse? He always uses really trivial examples of Sally didn’t say hello and never mentions things like chronic pain and such.

It is same path.the only difference would be harder and takes longer time to clear deeper trauma.once you believed and you committed, needs to be patient,it is just matter of time to get there and it will for sure.

Abuse needs to be stopped. Cannot expect people to be abused and just say it is my job to relax and be okay with it 🤣🤣🤣 of course in the ideal world all of us are well developed and strong, to stay intact against any attack but we know in reality that is not the case. It is a fantasy. 😂 in that world all of us are rich and abundant as well and babies need no carrying or feeding 🤣 but when abuse is over, and free of that cycle, it can be time to learn letting go and surrendering?

I believe abuse is supposed to teach us forgiveness, it's extremely difficult but once you do it there seems to be a sense of relief, I thought I'd always find some things impossible to forgive and it chewed me up inside but I'm doing it day by day and I'm so relieved to let it go,they can't hurt me now but if I hold on I'm hurting myself and I'm done with being hurt,so I'm choosing not to be,I feel the emotions when I'm triggered and they hurt me no one else so I'm working on my triggers and things are way better 😊

For people in prison, the starting point is to help them understand reincarnation and karma ( cause and effect). And that imprisonment is a way to atone for our previous negative actions. Accepting our life as it unfolds, including all the dualities of life is following the pathless path.
