Living Simply With a Flip Phone

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The promise of constant contact isn't good for all relationships. For Judith Goudsmit, a young New Yorker with no desire for a smartphone, the flip phone offers reprieve. She tells her increasingly rare story in this episode of If Our Bodies Could Talk with James Hamblin.

How does one become a "dating expert"? Wouldn't dating experts be happily married people? I mean, that's what I would consider a "dating expert." Call me old fashioned if you will, but I still subscribe to the idea that marriage is the end goal of dating for most people. (Yes, I know there's a huge contingent of people that want to date but don't want to get married, but studies still show that most people see themselves in a marriage sometime in the future.) So, since I'm married and happy, let me give all you singles some advice about smartphones: you don't need one in order to date. You're welcome.

I find the most worrying thing about this article the responses. So many people are denigrating the article and the author in the process. "How does he know this?" (He explained his credentials and his process.) Why is he doing this? (It's his job and he is interested in helping people.) He is only sixteen (You calculated that completely wrong. How is your math?) It's an elaborate joke. (It is a good paper written by a conscientious, trained scientist.) The author NOWHERE advised you to stalk your date on social media, quite the opposite. This feels so judgemental. (Honestly, how many professional articles based on social problems have you read? This is not in the least judgemental, but rather concerned.) I am glad to see the few from people who use flip phones or have restricted their online time on their own. I suggest everyone read the entire article and then all the comments. You will find the majority of comments reactive, paranoid and just wrong. The author knows what he is talking about and his statistics are sound. On the other hand, if you are involved in this problem you are very likely to denigrate this article. Read your own reply and see if that is what you are doing. Articles like this as written to help people. The author is articulate and his statistics are right. I checked. Did you? If you know how to use that smartphone, you should know how to research the net.
