This is my first time watching a canadian farmer, exept for one shepherd lady you likely know, whom I've loved to follow for maybe 3 years. The other farmers I follow are really fun, but it feels good to my ex translator's ears to hear good canadian English. Southern grammar sometimes sets my hair on ends, lol. Don't take that as meaning that I don't still enjoy watching them. Especially one who's had a cute children channel for about 3 or 4 months.
Chad, you and your Darlin continue to be the most inspiring couple I know ☺ All your critters are thriving and your flourishing farm a testament to your strong work ethic and dedication. Those little pigs, Molly and Olive make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 🥰 Olive is so good with them. Thank you for the continued uplifts !!! Warm hug for Darlin ❤🐶🐷🐱🐰🐣 Have a great day !

Thnx, fun to try an episode with 5 different storylines. It took 3 days to upload into KZread 😂 these critters are our stress relievers everyday.
I am a farmer in Brazil. The growth process is so fast here, for the tropics, that the work is huge. Today I cut lots of tree branches. All day doing this. I did only 2 mango tres and a sapoti tree. Long stair, climbing equipment, wood storage, compost windrows, an enormous bonfire, bees and ants attacks... and there are dozens of trees to take care yet... Here, if we let them grow freely, the jungle invades the buildings...

Just a note. Chickens LOVE Japanese beetles. In fact, chickens are the only animal I know of that will eat those darn pests. They used to ingest our strawberry patch until I let the chickens out and in less than a minute, seven chickens gobbled up what looked like several hundred beetles.

Good to know, I tried to give the ones in the trap to the chickens but they didn't touch it, probably cause most of them were dead and nasty.
Old dead rotten trees are integral to good forest health. Pull over a percentage of live trees, roots and all. They will present an incredible ecosystem to fungi and bacteria, replenishing and renewing nutrients for a healthy forest. And opening up the canopy for more sjnlight. Watch some youtube channels on Old Forest Regrowth.

to help young trees get established without weed pressure you can use cardboard around the base and then top it with mulch or straw... I've learned this lesson over time. Also you may have to put mini fences around each tree to protect them from deer and rabbits. Lots of luck.

30:30 looks like your chain needs sharpened. Your chainsaw should've dropped straight into that cut, and you look like you're making sawdust. You should be making some decent sized chips. When measuring out your logs, get yourself a 16 inch bar and chain for your saw so you can just but it up against the front of your log, give a quick squeeze and itll make a slight groove at 16 inches.when cutting in the woods, after you cut down your 1st tree, get 2 logs cut and use them in the feild as a saw horse so you don't have to drag the larger logs back to the house just to cut them again. Will save a ton of time for you, and im loving the channel

Lovely property. One thing about the home-made covers from the old plastic bags. Not all plastic is meant for direct sunlight; outdoor plastics are UV-hardened and will not fall apart after absorbing UV radiation. Those bags may not last more than one year and as they disintegrate they will litter your gardens will tiny plastic chunks. Another KZread channel, RED Gardens, has demonstrated what non-UV hardened plastic will do (I do recommend his channel as well; he's a Canadian).

Yeah they’re fairly docile compared to a lot of stories I heard.
I was a foster child when I was six years old when I first came to Canada from the USA,. Our farm was in Fisherville Ontario are you far from there? I would love to visit with my brother this summer when he returns from the way up north in Whitehorse when his daughter and son and their families live.
@HiddenSpringFarm
Жыл бұрын
Not sure where Fisherville is but we’re up in Horseshoe Valley area close to Barrie & Orillia.
One thing that has become a big problem for us is building permits and property taxes. If you want to build up infrastructure like root cellar, greenhouse, barn, etc. the regulations&taxes make it very slow and expensive (government). Of course the government loves the control and the taxes that they then can waste on things but it a huge discouragement and disadvantage. The recent years have gotten so bad (extremely high cost of living and low wages) that we started thinking of leaving Canada. But we have two children (about 10 years old) and are about 20 years away from retirement and we are wondering if starting all over again would be really worth it. I started looking at Belize, Equador.. We are not quite sure how to continue.
When your rooster crows, all I hear is “get the hell out of here”😅

Best tip is to understand that most fruit trees require some kind of cross pollination from the same fruit but different varieties. We have apples but varieties Honey Crisp, wolf, golden delicious, Fuji, cortland. If u just have one apple or one pear tree it most likely won’t fruit.
Is it only you and your grandma in the farm?
I would ask what variety is the Pear; but prob'ly you won't know till it actually fruits. This spring's growth will likely have a lot of suckers ... Oh yeah, and water sprouts. Don't panic, just stick to the pruning plan Let's hope for the really fat red pears ...
@HiddenSpringFarm
2 ай бұрын
I think it’s just a really old variety of wild pear. It hasn’t fruited much even after the pruning, I think it needs more cross pollination from another pear variety. The pears are small and green last year it only gave a few fruits. I’ve planted 2 more pear trees close by but they’re still young so maybe a few more years they’ll help cross pollinate.

We keep 3 roos, MJ, Big Red & Elvis. 3 different breeds. I find the hens are actually happier too. Roosters allow us to breed and hatch our own chicks for sale, meat chicks and fertile hatching eggs for sale. Roosters will also defend their flock when free ranging which I'll hopefully build my setup this summer.

@HiddenSpringFarm
Жыл бұрын
Always good to hear folks helping to grow our channel for so long from the beginning, thank you. Even when I look back at what we've accomplished it's amazing, but imagine where we'll be in the future. The cats will be fine, they have my workshop which is now the cat house and the protected outdoor catio area plus inside the cat house we have a heated tent that fits 4 cats and I'm waiting for another one on order so they'll be nice and toasty on those frigid nights. But honestly most times they only go in the tent for a warm up and then they go out. That's exactly what I intended for this much longer episode to be...a stress reliever (for me AND the viewers lol)
I have to ask the hard questions here... but how did you end up affording all of this? Do you both work full time jobs still? The equipment you have all together costs tens of thousands of dollars and that's not even counting the property + house costs. This is certainly a dream for many of us, and I recently moved to a 50 acre property, but due to the house we bought being a money sink havent been able to pursue any real property tasks.
@HiddenSpringFarm

Oh yeah of course we both still work for a living. The farm business doesn’t bring in near enough to be sustainable yet not too mention all the startup costs.
I was wondering what you mean buy permaculture orchard???
@HiddenSpringFarm
Ай бұрын
Well it’s trying to take a balanced ecosystem approach, instead of just having one fruit we have 6 or 7, with Honey locusts mixed in which act as nitrogen fixers and lots of raspberries & blackberries in between trees. Also trying to rewild the area so it’s more natural. Some call it a food forest. I’m no expert on the subject though just been trying to implement some principles as I learn them.
Cool video, But nothing like spending a 100k to grow $800 worth of food. Looks fun though
