Living on the Most Crowded Island on Earth

Two hours off the coast of Colombia is a small island home to over 1,200 people. As the entirety of Santa Cruz del Islote only spans the length of two soccer fields, residents live in close quarters, making the island four times as dense as the borough of Manhattan. Despite the circumstances, the community makes the most of their limited surface area, packing in a school, two shops and one restaurant. Only 150 years ago, the island was uninhabited; today, generations of families are proud to call Santa Cruz del Islote home.

This is why I've never applied for a job at the restaurant right beside my apartment. Would love a zero-minute commute, but getting called in on day off I couldn't lie and say I'm out of town or across town or anything like that.

@@idk459 That's just how restaurants work - people call in sick or don't even bother to call in at all, or suddenly a group shows up without a reservation. It's often a scramble. There's a meme that describes it well. In text message.... manager: A group showed up, the dishwasher quit, and one of the cooks called in sick. off duty cook: Oh, wow, that's crazy - good luck though!

I doubt that would really prevent nearly all crime. The people on this island might just be uniquely nurtured into not hurting each other. Sex crimes and murder are most often committed against close relatives, close friends, or spouses. That island might prevent a lot of theft but theft isn't the worst crime.

In small communities, if you do anything wrong everyone finds out about it, or if that person goes to another small community what he did in past would catch up soon. In today's societies, it doesn't matter because people do not know each other, and you can escape with anything if the police don't catch you.

@@testingchannel1182 Shoot these days a person will and does commit crimes in broad daylight in front of many and then gets caught and still nothing happens. and now the crooks know that they wont get in trouble so whats stopping them now. Nothing , that's what. Shoot where I live in Oregon, we were the first and only state to pass a new law l that it is not a crime to have any kind of drug on you heroine, meth, acid, weed, cocaine.unless you are dealing it ,but for personal use it's not a crime It's all legal now. I don't think that was very wise.. I know it's going to save an unbelievable amount of money with court cost and such but the druggies are still wanting their drugs and they can't hold a job so where do you think they are getting their drug money from, Yep that's right they are stealing it from me and you . It may be saving court cost but it's costing me and you a lot more than they were spending. They say they are going to be spending more on rehabs but that remains to be seen...Needless to say the crime rate here is out of control and I am being 1004 honest no exaggerating at all, out of control !

This Island gives me some serious 'Fallout' vibes. Building a dense, ramshackle city in a relatively tiny space, like Diamond City (a city built inside an abandoned Baseball stadium) or Rivet City (a city built in an abandoned aircraft carrier) just seems kinda cool. Weird, but cool. (I know this is an *actual island* and not a baseball stadium (or fictitious) lol, but it still has that 'thrown together' rickety-shack look to it and I'm into it)

RedroomStudios mate no matter how good you know each other there they could always backstab you anytime because it’s part of human science. And also saying it’s practically “impossible” to escape is so stupid because the story said it was only a 2 hour ride from Columbia. And once they do reach Columbia. The islands people won’t be able to track down that person because there is no police department to tell Columbia who to track down. so your the one that’s wrong innit.

I'm probably going to be sounding like a jerk here, but as one person already mentioned, there is no racism because they are all from the same gene pool. Introduce a foreigner there and you'll see how racist these tight communities can be. And there is no upper class or lower class because everyone is equally poor and uneducated. However give one person some money and you'll see how fast the cast and class system becomes visible. It is only the human nature to be this way unfortunately. Social studies show that places where there is a larger sense of community there is also a larger sense of xenophobia and the community does not want to accept outsiders. This is evident in country towns across the developed world where it is almost predominantly the country folk of small communities that vote for far right, anti immigration parties. Look at the slums of India or the Phillipines or even the favelas in Brasil and some other south American countries, everyone is poor and everything including the infrastructure is poor to nonexistence. But within these slums, slowly some people manage to get themselves out of poverty just enough to be above others, and they suddenly become the new rich kids in town and distinguish themselves as upper class.
