I've been living in my Nissan Murano for 3 weeks working 50 hours a week where I have to show up. Its saved me tons of money. I must say though nobody would follow any video I made due to every morning waking up looking like Medusa yet worse! Still worth it💜

Girl I used to live in our vehicle too. I wish I had known about those pins. We used to stuff towels down in the gasket by the window. Or drape a towel over the window and shut the door on it. I cannot tell you how many times I woke up soaking wet because it started raining in Tennessee and if you've ever been to West Tennessee you will know it rains a lot that's why it's so green and beautiful here. But the towels would absorb the rain water and then start dripping on me. Even now living in an apartment me and my husband talk about how comfortable and peaceful it was living in the van versus actually living in an apartment. I told him when we buy our own house the in the backyard or even in the woods that we're going to put a vehicle back there just so we can get away from everything LOL

I lived out of my car for like 6-8 months (w/my cat) because I would be traveling a lot back and forth between CA and NV. It was kind of like an adventure. And Zoey, my cat, liked the car rides. I had set up her carrier in the back seat with a cat bed strapped ontop so she could look out the window while we drove. I had the carrier strapped in and the front passenger seat leaning back against it to anchor it in. She had a covered litter box in the back (the flooring lined with trash bags) strapped inyo my cargo rings in my trunk (i had a hatch back). But she usually waited until she could go out to go. Id go to a park sometimes while I would work on my laptop or make calls, etc. I'd crack the back door open so she could go out to play, climb a tree, etc. Or Id get out too and play with her. She never went out of my line of sight.. I'd call her back after maybe an hour or so and she'd hop back in the car. Her favorite was going into Petsmart to watch the bird enclosures. She wore a harness when traveling or when she was out of the car. I went to the gym to shower and work out (which is when Zoey would usually go play and explore the park next door (she was an indoor/outdoor cat anyway)). I often would park overnight in hospital parking lots, or at rest stops (of course) when traveling. It was an interesting adventurous time in my life, for sure.

I lived in my car with my cat for two months, alternating sleeping in the car and camping in a tent, and I don't think my cat's ever been happier X-D He never once got lost, always knew where to come find me in the morning after spending the night hunting and having fun discovering a new place. He had the trunk of the car to himself (without the flat covering thing that hangs behind the back seats obviously) with his carrier and his litter box. At night, he generally slept on me if we were in the car or at the foot end of my small one person tent if he felt like it. It was really nice to have the company. The litter box didn't get that much use actually because he would rather way for the stops. I didn't keep him on a leash, I tried at first but they haven't invented a harness he will not get out of but he always comes back when I call and never strays too far from sight so after the initial worry, I just accepted that he was his own cat and trusted that he would come back to me. It worked out X-D

the way I change my shirt in a car is this: I take the new shirt and I’ll put it over my head, but I won’t put my arms through. I’m completely covered. then, I will take my arms out of the sleeves of the old shirt and pull it up to my shoulders. then I put my arms in the sleeves of the new shirt. at this point, I am then able to pull the old shirt out through the head-hole of my new shirt and that’s it! hard to explain but it works and no one sees anything.

I don't live in my car but I've changed in my car plenty of times and I guess I just don't understand what the big hurry is and what all that extensive planning is for? Not trying to be a bitch... just really trying to understand!

Katie, its probably not a good idea to leave an inverter plugged in because it will wear out the electronics in the inverter over time. Only plug it in when you are using it. Keeping the inverter on/draining the battery without the car being on is a bad idea as well, since if the car is on the alternator is running and that will re-charge the cars battery, otherwise you are draining your car battery and thats not good.

Then I attach the blanket on each side above the doors and I have my own little cave. The back seats are folded down so I get the whole back seat/hatch area. A lot of room for one or a couple. My back windows are tinted so it's private. I love seeing how other gypsy's live and get new ideas! Thank you for the videos!

I’m thrilled because I’m so proud of myself to discover I can use a zipper lock bag as a sink and don’t have to make a big production about spitting outside ect. Just threw some papertowels in there to absorb water and threw in my garbage. Sounds pretty pathetic if you’ve never been depressed or ACTUALLY NEVER HAVE lived in a vehicle.

Cathie Dawson, reading through these comments and hearing backlash when anyone tries to give advice really makes me feel uncomfortable about leaving a comment, but whatever, here I go. While I agree with you about her getting a larger vehicle, I also think she could benefit from a more capable vehicle as well. *If her goal is to "travel" then she needs a ride that's capable of leaving the pave roads and accessing all the free BLM (burea of land management) lands*, this would open up a whole new world for her! I personally have a 2015 Forester XT (a regular Forester would be better at fuel economy, 32 MPG) that I'm able to live out of. I can't speak more highly of it. From the spacious sleeping area 6 ft, 5 in. to the panoramic moonroof to star gaze yourself to sleep. This vehicle has taken me to some incredible places. Most recently I camped out for two nights on the a cliff overlooking Zion National park, and just a week ago I drove up within 3 feet from the waters edge at Lake Mead and spent the day relaxing next to warm aqua blue water. The best part of it, the dispersed campsites I have access to are absolutely EPIC & FREE!! Please don't take this comment the wrong way. I know she' said she's content with her Yaris, but her #1 goal is to travel right? There's more to life than city living. Imagine driving to a natrual hotspring in the middle of winter while the snow is still falling on you and then... dipping in.

You’re really carefree... like I would be so worried about someone seeing the bags, clothes and purses you have in the truck since the windows aren’t tinted. Maybe that’s just me always thinking you should never just assume the best in everyone, but I think window tinting would be a good investment... no hate. Just concerned about your safety.

Actually there are lots of women driving trucks now, and they sleep at truck stops. Truck driving is essentially living from a car (vehicle) anyways. My wife is on her way home from a road trip, and is Prius camping. She is doing great, and she sleeps at either truck stops or Wal Mart parking lots. She also has covers for her windows she made herself from cardboard and fabric. The shapes are custom fit to the windows, so you don't have to worry about light getting in, or lack of privacy.

Real homelessness can happen to anyone. I was homeless. In the month of January in Wisconsin. It was a very trying time. This is rather luxurious living.

I've lived like Katie for a period-- in my car, moving around to different public lots, working, vigilant, even had tinted windows. I relate to the carefree attitude of Katie here, but it also unsettles me. So I just want to say (for anyone reading comments) that there will likely come a time when one is forced to not only understand but also *feel* the reality of just how vulnerable you and your belongings are when you are a young solo woman living in your car. Even when checking off all the precautions-- nothing visible in car, blocking windows, changing locations, 'safe' areas, etc. - it only takes one bad encounter to f*ck everything up. After having my car broken into and losing valuables and on another occasion narrowly avoiding a scary situation, I could rarely ever feel safe or at ease enough to relax in my car or to leave my car without anything I valued on my person. I could meet all of my needs (hygiene, food, sleep, income) but I was always on alert and this became emotionally taxing. It took a few instances for me to really get how vulnerable I was and how little chance I stood against anyone set on harming me with this lifestyle.

I lived in my truck/camper, boats, condemned buildings, etc. for about 30 tears of my life, and preferred it to living in a high rent noisy apartment. There's more peace of mind without the stress of having to meet the rent each month, talk about a buzz-kill. I did this in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. There was more space then, cause the world was not as crowded and you could park almost anywhere. It's clearly much tougher now, so you have my complete respect. You remind me of a woman I know when you wear the round glasses. I love your vid's, there was no internet or cell-phones at that time, a very different world, indeed. I think you're lovely. I too have health issues that no one understands.

That's exactly how I sleep in my car. I usually put up shirts or towels. The best is when it's rainy out in the morning, so you can chill for a bit longer. That's where I'm at now, in Austin. One thing you can do is, to cover all your stuff with a towel or blanket during the day, that'll keep from peering eyes. Oh yeah, about the Duracell charger thing, I have the same one. It does really come in handy. Just watch you what you plug in, you might drain the car battery. Small portable fans during the night and charging you phone is okay when you car is off, but for your laptop or other bigger items, keep your car on during use.

OMG you remind me so much of my lifestyle choices. I have traveled a lot and Target, Starbucks, and the gym were my go to places to go. Starbucks to do college HW online and you can get free refills with the Gold Card, Target is fun to buy groceries to eat right away (they have Starbucks) too or to buy makeup and fun stuff, and the gym to work out and get ready. Or most Starbucks have single restrooms to change if you feel weird dressing in the car, you can change there (like I used to sometimes.) I used baby wipes when I felt grimy in a hot day and the whole backpack thing too--same thing! You are organized and super clean. I know that makes a whole difference! Awesome! I always thought living in a car would be so easy and fun. If I did not have kids, I would totally travel the US and do this. I love traveling but stay at hotels since I have kids, but the travel to get to those hotels, I use the skills that I have learned throughout my traveling experience. Your life is exciting and some people like stability. However, I am a person that thrives on exploring and living different environments and experiences. You go girl! LIVE and do what makes you happy!

I thank you so much Ms. Katie for making this video, even though most of us know these thing's, some time's it is helpful, for me anyway to be shown step by step what someone else would do, so that now i want feel alone in my new beginning. I really don't want to be all over the place letting anyone else know that I'm a new car dweller if that make sense.
