Livewire S2 Del Mar - Good Beginner Motorcycle?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

EV Electric Motorcycle good for a beginner? Nope. Well at least not THIS motorbike. Why? too much power, round wheels and too tall. However, its one of the best bikes I've ever owned!

You should update this video, this video is misleading. You left out you can deactivate all the modes and have a custom learning mode.

I’ll pin your video, you do bring up a good point, but not one that changes the overall scope. Why? You can not deactivate the default Road mode, which remains a mode that new riders can find themselves in trouble pretty easy on. Actually, if a new rider (accidentaly or otherwise) switches between modes that have drastic regeneration differences, it too can get them in trouble.

@@MCCJustMotos let me ask you this, when you turn the bike off and come back and start it up again later in the day. Will it start up in road mode or will it stay in what ever mode you were in last. To me why are you pressing the mode button. You should as a beginner should make a beginner mode. And leave it there till you want to move up in level. And yeah people are dumb and will fuck with things but thats up to them. And fucking around has consequences. To me this is a great beginning bile. You have a bike that can grow with you.

@@wasp2151yup, it can stay in whatever mode you were last. Yes, you can grow with your bike and yes you can make a mistake and get yourself in trouble, tires and power wise both. Of course each rider is gifted with differenting beginner skill sets so this may be a good beginner bike for a select group of people (as I mention). To me I think a pure beginner bike minimizes the chances to have a mistake cause issues. And if this bike wasn’t so overly powerful at a simple button push (mistake or not) can 10000% causing new rider to get in over their head. That being said it is a fantastic motorcycle, the best I’ve ever owned.

Love the videos and attention to the S2DM…..all review elements spot on and well presented …but as a brand new rider S2DM meets my beginner needs perfect !,, (just keep it rain mode ) why a great beginner bike….no clutch, no heat, no noise, light weight, maneuvers great, no maintenance, not interested in long full day rides, great tech…well designed and quality build backed by a great company and great new company, classy….now if the future S3 is slightly less powerful …..an ever better starter bike. Thanks again for the great video and attention to the deal mar

Thanks for the kind words! These are great bikes! Agreed on it being totally doable, each persons skills are definitly unique. my comments are more my general thoughts, than an absolute. However, if someone hit sport mode by mistake instead it’s really easy to do. ;)

I think the whole notion of beginner bike has evolved over the years. In the 1980s, when I started to ride, a biginner bike was a 125. We didn't have advanced electronics, ABS, traction control, etc. People learned to ride on underpowered, basic machines. Now almost all bikes have an "A2" or beginners' version. To be fair, a 600cc bike today is probably easier to handle than a lot of old 125s but the real question for me is not power, but attitude. Power can get you out of situations, as much as into them. I do a lot of urban riding in Paris and before in London and power is essential, as are good brakes. That brings me to the tyres. After years of ICEs, I bought a Livewire One, (instead of the Del Mar - tough choice;-)). I found that the handling in the wet wasn't great are recently changed the tyres. It's a different machine. I'm sure that the same would be true of the Del Mar, or many other stock tyres. For beginners, something like the Michelin Road series would make all the difference.

Very good thoughts especially on the tires, that would make big difference for traction in wet and in turns. Of course new rider can learn on ANY bike, some are easier than others. :D

Sounds like it is a good beginner bike as long as you have the self-control to keep it in low mode until you are ready

It definitely has some features to make it a good beginner bike. But IMHO the line gets crossed into dangerous territory almost l imperceptibly. I have heard from a bunch of experience writers that they almost got in trouble on this bike.

About the Ride Mode selections, can you toggle OFF which modes the button cycles through in the settings menu like the pan am? I think locking out the accidental sport mode selection or limiting to a custom low power rain mode would help make it new rider friendly

  • @MCCJustMotos

    @MCCJustMotos

You totally can and that is a great point… I just think anyone can turn-off that mode or unlock it eventually and if you’re new writer, you could get yourself in trouble that way.

@@MCCJustMotos absolutely you need someone guiding new riders to get into the menu and detune the button options maybe just 🌧️ options until they get adequate seat time.

S2 even better for beginners with the upcoming S2MH (Mulholland model);) lighter, shorter height, no track mode, likely different tires….check out the S2DM owners manual for a sneak peak at the upcoming model specs. love It as a new rider !,,

I saw that today…I think better more street oriented tires would be welcome for a new rider. I’m not sure how different. The overall model will be but interesting to check it out.

If that is College Park Maryland I have been in and out of that airfield dozens of times but not in the last 30 years; it is the nation's oldest airport-in-continuous-operation, Kitty Hawk in N.C. obviously pre-dates it. This airfield has a railroad track at one end and tall trees at the other, always a challenge getting in and out of there...

For me the choice was between having a bike ill never ride or my new del mar which i ride every day. So yes its a great beginner bike because it actually gets me RIDING!!!

This is not a beginner bike. Learning to ride should be done on a small 125 bike like Grom or Supercub for the scooter people. IMO, manual trans are overrated and the future should be in a DCT. Not worring about shifting or stalling makes the ride more enjoyable. That's why we have auto trans on cars. People should get a bike that fits their skill level and height and weight. Riding within your limits makes the roads safer for everyone.

Nah. Honda just released the E-Clutch. Full auto or full manual. Eventually the clutch on a bike will be as common as they are in cars. Maybe for beginners they could have a key position that limits performance.

I know clutch is going away, but I still like it. They do have a way to limit Powhar as I mentioned, but it’s very easy to get overconfident and switch off to full power which could get you in trouble.

Mirrors are supposed to be this way…I i’m not a huge fan of the look and you can absolutely flip them out the other way. However, I understand why they did it like this for the style and also your hands have more room on the controls with the narrow ends on the inside.
