It’s so sad hearing his story, and during his fight he starts saying things like “children, frozen abandoned by you” “I avenge my friends” and “Zach Sophie Eric Toma”

I legit choked up on NG+ when I saw his dialog translated. It was such a punch in the gut. He was raging against a world that took his friends away. It devastated me.

Unlike every other puppet, he didnt give a crap about the king, he just wanted his friends back

Since I fought him the first time, I had this weird fascination with what he was saying. I could make out the text from the Parade Master, but I couldn’t figure his words out. The music also felt strangely vengeful. Music tells a lot about a character even if it’s just a few notes strung together. If the music was killer then there is definitely more than meets the eye. I ended up paging through the descriptions of the items connected to him and pieced together the story. This video however compacted it all and made my theory coherent. What a sad puppet, poor fella lost his only friends. Though if you think about it all of these puppets have a relatable theme, human tendency’s. The parade master sacrificed everything to keep the parade going, even if it was to tear of his own head and use it as a mallet. Murphy the scrapped watchman, became lost in grief with the loss of his friends and finally, kings flame Fuoco, dedicated his life’s purpose to that of serving the king. We humans often sacrifice things vital to us in order to preserve something else, grieve over the loss of those we love, and dedicate our lives to certain goals. In a game about puppets becoming humans, it would make sense for this to exist.

This was one of the 2 stories that almost made me cry and that made defeating the boss painful in the ng+, the other was Romeo and Carlo

I have a (fan) theory that certain puppets are able to break the Grand Covenant given enough emotional impetus. There seems to be no clear reason why Polendina isn't bound by the covenant, and (aside from just assuming he was made before the covenant) I assume he simply has such a strong attachment to Antonia and is so perfectly matched with his body/position that he developed a will and broke free of it. I feel like Murphy went through the same thing, he was so attached to his "friends", perhaps his Ergo was either a child itself or a caretaker of children, that his will to be with his "friends" overpowered the Covenant and allowed him to fully grieve without being bound to obey. In other words, he was literally set free by the power of friendship (but was still an antagonist anyway, sad!)

I like it. It fits with Julian's wife not raging, too. What snags me is how none of them tells us about the commands. Like they can't hear it. Poledina wasn't like "hey guys, some weird voice in my head keeps telling me to kill you all... something about Law Zero, I don't know."

@@rickytebbe Given that Ergo is inherently not aware of what it is or once was and doesn't seem to have any sort of will, I assume Ergo is being manipulated on some sort of unconscious impulse, like giving drugs to a lobotomy patient. I think it's more that, once they become aware, the Covenant is kind of powerless and would only amount to an intrusive thought if anything, because they developed an actual will, not just weird implanted ideas.

@Kameko-uq5wy pretty much where I was trying to lead you with that 😀 I don't think you need to qualify your theory with "fan". I think it's pretty solid and interesting. It honestly helps explain odd behavior of puppets who haven't fully awakened, too.

@@rickytebbe Also, about Polendina and the Grand Covenant. Polendina recites the Grand Covenant, so it's easy to assume puppets are aware of what it is. But it's more likely he wasn't intimately aware with the actual laws, nor are any puppets, but was just repeating what every resident in Krat knew about the laws, the "four" laws and how they were described in human words. Not only would the (real) laws affect puppets more discretely than just "you have to obey this person", but puppets even have their own language, so the laws we hear are really nothing more than an interpretation, or, even, marketing material.
