Liverpool 3-1 Nottingham Forest, FA Cup S/F 1989 (Old Trafford)

Спорт

15/04/89. Hillsborough. Britain's worst sporting disaster. 96 football fans went to a game, but never returned home. The game in question was the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It was abandoned after 6 minutes. 3 weeks later, the semi-final was replayed at Old Trafford. I dedicate this video to the memory of the 96, and hope that one day they get the justice they deserve. Martin Tyler is the commentator.

    I'm a Chelsea fan and I remember watching that fateful day at Hillsborough. There is always going to be rivalry between fans but the so called fans who use this disaster and others to mock each other in my opinion is disgusting. I remember in 1985 Chelsea played at Hillsborough on the first day of the 85/86 season. I was with my two brothers, one being only 14 and when we were queueing to get in there was only 2 turnstiles open and we were getting crushed against the wall at the side. I had to lift my younger brother up to stop him getting hurt. I know that is nothing compared to what happened that awful day but it was a bit scary. Like you say the 96 will never be forgotten and my deepest sympathies go out to all the families and friends of the fans who so tragically died that day. I might be on my own when I say this but I think the Hillsborough stadium should have been demolished and a shrine erected to commemorate their sad loss and Sheffield Wednesday should have relocated to another ground. I mean there is a place of remembrance at the site of the World Trade Centres and when the awful story about what happened at Fred West's house came to light that house was demolished so why not Hillsborough? Also I think I'm right in saying that the Heysel Stadium was demolished after that tragedy. How can anyone stand or sit at Hillsborough after what happened I don't know.

    Can never understand people who support teams no where near where they live. I mean Oxford had a half decent team back then too. My brother in law supports Liverpool even though he’s from Notts. I don’t even take him seriously when he wears the top and tells me all about the current team form etc. I say you can know all you like about the history of the club, current form etc etc but I still don’t see you as a Liverpool fan you’re from Notts 🤦🏻‍♂️ where as I got a mate who is from Liverpool and is a casual fan. He wouldn’t even know who they are playing next, what position in the league they are in etc and hasn’t followed them for weeks. But even so when he wears the top and I saw him earlier in the pub about to watch them on tv in the semis today everyone still saw him as a real Liverpool fan. I guess it means something to be from the place your team represents.

    Hindsite is a wonderful thing isn't it, the Liverpool v Forest game should really have been played at Villa Park as the red would have taken a bigger supporting away crowd and that stadium had the larger capacity to accommodate it, as an Evertonian we should have played Norwich at Hillsbrough in the other semi. whats dones done now and its in history im sorry to say.

  • @scherben8870

    @scherben8870

    Hillsborough had a larger capacity than Villa Park; Old Trafford had a larger capacity again. However, OT couldn't be used on the 15th, as United had a home match. Hillsborough shouldn't have been chosen simply because the ground didn't have a safety certificate. Add in the incompetence of the policing and stewarding, and you're left with the entirely preventable loss of 96 lives; hundreds injured; and an unknowable amount of PTSD. Why lessons weren't learned from the 1981 and 1987 semi-finals is beyond me.

  • @mrkipling2201

    Scherben very true the tunnel was too steep and didn't adhere to the safety rules it was a 1 in 6 gradient when it should have been 1 in 10 I think plus barriers were added, moved or removed without any upgrade to the safety certificate in pens 3 and 4 , signage was inadequate and the supposed capacity of the whole terrace was wrong. It wasn't used for 6 years after 1981 and why they started using it again is beyond me. As you say the warning signs were there in 87 and 88.

    I'm unsure what you mean by the "wasn't used for 6 years". If you mean the Leppings Lane terrace, that was in use, as United filled it on three occasions in the 80s prior to the disaster. :)

    Help and assistance? Once aware of the scale of the tragedy they kept there mouths shut, initially they were insulting and booing the fans on the pitch. Forest fans didn't come onto the pitch and the SWP decided they needed to waste officers from helping the injured and dying by forming a line right across the halfway line. How did Forest fans help? I do remember several of your fans and that manager of yours blaming the Liverpool fans for the disaster. That's about it.

    Given the significance of this match, the crown distribution seems rather odd - theres is masses of empty space on the predominantly seated Scoreboard End and yet the mostly standing Stretford End is full. Given the 39000 attendance in a ground which at the time held well over 50,000 the logical thing would to fully utilise the seated sections and reduce the number of standing tickets.

    Old Trafford a better designed stadium, should've been the ground to host in the first place, why were fan pens ever a thing? Why if all the fans are the same team would they remain in place? I think that Liverpool rightfully didn't withdraw, it was better to honour those who had been victims by trying to win the cup. Who'd have thought in 2018 after it seeming like we'd had justice, proceedings have currently been thrown out against Bettison?

    Ironically, the pens were in part due to fan hooliganism. Heysel 1985 (which, unlike Hillsborough, was the fault of fans together with poor stadium choice/UEFA management) being one incident during a very troubled time. There was standing room in stadiums to allow for bigger capacities and more revenue. In the 60's and 70's it wasn't uncommon to see crowds right on the touch and goal lines. At times, they were literally on the pitch. Hillsborough was the disaster that revolutionized stadium safety standards. And it's the main reason that today you can go to a football match in relative safety. I always thought Old Trafford or even Wembley would have been a better choice. Hillsborough had been the location of the exact same fixture the year before and there was no major incidents. The disaster happened because of inexperienced police officers in charge in 1989. It's also worth mentioning that as I write this (15 Jan, 2019), Duckenfield, who was the officer in charge at Hillsborough, is on trial for manslaughter. Along with several others.

    Fair comment, I don't disagree. But there's always a degree of collective responsibility in football supports. If there's collective will to stamp out e.g. the singing of a certain song, then it will be stamped out. If there isn't, then it won't. It's hard on the decent fans who don't sing the songs, but there you go.

    My memory of this game is probably very different to most on here. I was at Villa Park watching Everton beat Norwich when Hillsborough was happening. Then like everyone with any empathy realised if the balls had come out the hat in a different order that could have been me and my club suffering. Between Hillsborough and this rearranged game John Aldridge announced he was seriously considering he may never kick a ball again. I knew at the time he would . Then Brian Laws scores an own goal. Nottingham Forrest indeed the entire footballing world stood as one with Liverpool, and how does Aldridge repay it? He takes the piss out of Laws. Laws on the ground devastated at scoring an own goal has Aldridge come along and ruffle his hair. No sympathy , it may be a small thing, you could argue after Hillsborough people weren't thinking properly. I was genuinely disgusted at Aldridge throwing back all the sympathy his club and himself had received with this selfish uncaring act. I will never forget this and have never heard a single person ever mention it. That's my memory of this game , instead of my first thought being a club their fans and players showing the strength to live this nightmare again and come through the other side it's of John Aldridge humiliating a fellow pro for his mistake. Thanks John I hope you're proud.

    That hair-ruffling incident shamed Aldridge. I remember it well. Like you I was at Villa Park watching the Blues beat Norwich (terrible game) on the day of Hillsborough and remember the news filtering through on the radio. If I had been Brian Laws I'd have sought him (Aldridge) out after the game and demanded he explain himself. Maybe he was just immature (or, more likely, thick) but it jarred horribly with the atmosphere the game was played under.

    No, but football being football it made songs about Hillsborough sadly inevitable. Maybe if Liverpool fans hadn't made it their business to taunt United about Munich for so long, United supporters wouldn't have seen fit to taunt them about Hillsborough. But they did, so I guess we'll never know.
