Live: Witness of an ancient friendship at East King of Sulu's tomb 坐高铁看中国--大运河畔苏禄王陵

Along the Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway, in a small city named Dezhou in east China's Shandong Province, the tomb of the East King of Sulu has stood tall for over 600 years. Sulu is an ancient kingdom located in the Philippine islands. More than 600 years ago, the Sulu King traveled across the sea to make political, economic, cultural and other exchanges with Chinese emperor Yongle in the Ming Dynasty.
As the Sulu King's lineage extends to more than 3,700 descendants in China, the tomb is also known as the only intact foreign king's tomb in the country. Join CGTN reporter Yang Xinmeng to explore the tomb and trace its history.

The channel is misleading by misrepresenting everything. This was not a friendship between equals. The sultan was buried in China because he died in China. And what was he doing in China? Presenting tribute. He caught an unknown disease and died on the way back. Past China maintained a tributary system where they demand that minor nearby states recognize them as the overlord. New rulers who come into power are expected to come and present themselves and bring tribute. This cements their status as underling. And of course, if the emperor prefers somebody else for the throne, then they are not coming back. They will be kept as "guests", unable to go home. Note that the emperor never goes anywhere. It is always the tributary state's rulers who come. Sometimes, some of these rulers refused to come, and kept postponing their visits with various excuses. Perhaps they worried about putting themselves under the power of the emperor. Regardless of how many guards you bring, it would be but a miniscule force against the soldiers the emperor has near his own capital. More than a few wars have resulted from the rulers of tributary states refusing to come.

@@danielch6662 Paying tributary is like buying arm in modern day from the overlord. In ancient days, every state paid tributary to maintain peace, not with China but as a form of protection from stronger menacing neighbours. In addition, it is not just state to state relation which was formed but a formal close relationship in which the emperor betrothed their own princess to the king/sultan. Whether the Sultan of Sulu was kept as "guest" was only a guess work. In ancient day, why would the emperor need to travel the "7-sea" when an emissary, the like of Zheng He can do his bidding. It is believed that the Sultan of Sulu and Emperor Yongle was very special to each other and it was he who sought protection from the emperor against the Sultan of Brunei.

@@danielch6662 You are the one who is trying to mislead. If the Sultan was merely an underling, why would the Chinese Emperor build him an imperial tomb? It shows that the Chinese Emperor had huge respect for the Sultan. And one more thing, Ming Dynasty never sent a military fleet to Southeast Asia nor launched any military mission. Ancient rulers of the region sent tributes to Ming Dynasty not because of political or military submission. But out of admiration and desire to have a relationship with the world's number 1 superpower. Some of them did that to cement and protect their own rulership from their rivals.

We, the Tausug people of Sulu in the Philippines are very proud of our ancestors ( the Sultan of Sulu) who happened to be buried in mainland china. It shows the co-existence of two great nations and how great the Tausug people and the Chinese people during this ancient time up to now. The Sultan of Sulu ruled the Philippines and the state religion was Islam before Christianity was introduced by Spain. and I am proud to say up to this time that greatness and royalty is still in our blood and will continue to flourish. I am grateful to the Chinese people for celebrating this event despite the fact what is happening now between China and Philippines. Sulu and the Tausug people are now experiencing a lot of challenges and the worst of these challenges is poverty despite of its social and economic contribution to our country.

01:36 Kingdom of Sulú (Sulú, emphasis is on the last syllable}. Thank you CGTN friends for featuring this. Greetings from Mindanao, Philippines. During Ming period, one of Zheng He's port of call in Southeast Asia was the Kingdom of Sulú. Zheng He strengthened the foothold of Islam and Islamic polity in today's Indonesia Malaysia and Philippines. 15:45 There is a 1987 movie about the Sulú Sultan's expedition to China uploaded on KZread before. It's called 'Hari sa Hari, Lahi sa Lahi'. Last year I was still able to show the movie to my students using a classroom projector. Unfortunately the US government ordered KZread to remove it, for fear that Filipinos especially those of us in Mindanao might forge closer ties with China.

the fact china has records about this certain king from sulu but the ancient "Philippines" has few to no records at all and this piece of history is not even taught in school speaks volume. most of our history begins in 1500 and mostly about spain, catholicism, etc. w some twist of it ignoring the precolonial history. Every Filipino deserves to know, to learn, and be educated about this part of history. the precolonial history (about 600yrs if we start counting from 900circa base on the laguna inscription, the oldest inscription found in the Phil.) is as important as the 300+ years history during Spanish occupation.

The above mentioned is to express the Philippines and China was a friend and respected each other. However, China appreciated that the Philippines have to look after themselves first and foremost. It is nice to know this. We know that ancient Chinese traded with Southeast Asia for millenia before colonialism came. In the process there were intermingling of the different peoples. This why in countries like the Philippines, the majority of people have some degree of Chinese ancestry in their DNA. This is even earlier than the migration of Chinese to the Philippines 1 to 2 centuries ago, the descendants of whom are now called Chinoys.

What's interesting is how they separated the names "Wenhala" and "Andulu" into three characters each. While they might have known that they were single words, the first character they used for them ended up as the surnames of the descendants, even if the first character doesn't really have any meaning in the original language, it's just the first syllables of the names of their ancestors.

Nothing interesting. We all know that Chinese is a single syllabic language. Your name "Distortion" has 3 syllables and can be transliterated into 低头身。They would sound like "distortion" and its 3 characters. Though the 2 given chinese surnames might not mean what the original Sulu words meant, they are very good names. The Chinese characters "An" means "peace", and "Wen" means "warmth"
