I had forgotten Dave Johnson was on this broadcast. He was a very good race caller known for his signature line, "And down the stretch they come!" He called many of Secretariat's races on the PA system, but he had the misfortune of being the track announcer for the 1973 Belmont. Those who were at the track that day heard his voice, but unfortunately his call is not remembered today. It was CBS's Chic Anderson who so famously called that race for the estimated 50 million people who saw the race live on television, which is almost as legendary as the race itself. It might well be the greatest sports call of all time. Johnson gave some good commentary here.

Thanks for uploading this. I never got to tape the broadcast when it first aired. I miss the original theme music, one of the best in television history, which gives me chills up and down my spine. I was lucky to have seen Slew O'Gold at Three Chimneys back in 1989 when he was in the same barn as his sire, Seattle Slew. He was a huge horse, almost as big as Forego. Also saw Chief's Crown the same day I saw Slew and SOG. Pete Axthelm had written for Newsweek, where he wrote that wonderful essay about Secretariat, which was in the issue where the great horse was on the cover in 1973. Secretariat always brought out the best in sportswriters. Axthelm passed away way too young, awaiting a liver transplant, when he died at age only 47 of liver failure in 1991. This passage from Axthelm's essay still brings the tears to my eyes 46 years later. He was every bit as good a writer as Bill Nack, and that is high praise indeed: "Secretariat generates a crackling tension and excitement wherever he goes. Even in the kind of gray weather that shrouds lesser animals in anonymity, Secretariat's muscular build identifies him immediately; his gleaming reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest, he becomes even more prepossessing as he glides smoothly around the track; and when he accelerates to the pace that has already destroyed his rivals in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments rare in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness." Great passage, great essay. RIP Pete Axthelm.

It's awesome to see Seattle Slew breeding a mare and Northern Dancer prancing the field. That's what a Breeders' Cup telecast should feature more. I hope future telecasts would show Triple Crown stallions like American Pharoah and Justify and influential broodmares like Leslie's Lady.

Thanks for letting me relive being too wasted to walk to OTB with my last $6.00 to bet Wild Again at 30-1, figuring the owners were getting only 5-1 on their supplemental entry. The BC definitely lived up to its promise and then some.

Wild Again should have come down as well. He laid all over Slew o Gold in the stretch. You can see him leaning into Slew and putting all his weight on him. Slew o Gold wins a clean race without those two nags bouncing him around.
