Great conversation. I love Robert Wright and funnily enough, as an Israeli yoga and meditation teacher, his book “why Buddhism is true” is one of the books I quote from the most, especially during these crazy times of war and turmoil. I find it helps the average person resonate with Buddhist values through a more scientific or factual lense. Anyway was super fun listening to this - I think you were both able to open each others minds a bit which is remarkable and definitely not something that you see online too often. Looking forward to many more!

I like you to ask these questions from your guests if you can. Why do Israeli soldiers keep posting videos on tik tok of blowing up so many infrastucture like apartment buildings and even the last university in Gaza even when there is no Hamas presence and IDF has complete control over it? Is there an ulterior motive? Does Israel have the right to keep taking Palestinians hostags in the west bank without proper charge and indefinite detention as a "bargaining chip" as opposed to Hamas taking Israelis hostages? Mainly because this is said to be the main reason why Hamas stormed into Israel to take hostages to swap with Israeli government.

Noam, since you've done so much research and have talked to so many people who were there, can you or any of them describe specifically what the Israeli offer was in Camp David? Is there a map? What about water rights, airspace, borders, security, East Jerusalem? Did Israel offer reparations to refugees that can't be settled back?

One stat I’d be interested in seeing but I’m sure it doesn’t exist is, of the 25,000 Gazans who have perished, how many died because they were human shields? I do agree that whatever your views on Israel, Hamas is committing genocide against Palestinians. Their views on martyrdom and human shields prove intent.

Just read South Africas 84-page submission at the International Court of Justice. Michael Shaw KC, Israelis lead defense council, made the same argument as you did and did not address South Africas claims. Hamas is guilty of being in the most densely populated area in the middle east and as such the accusation of human shield would necessarily follow. But to say that A is committing genocide (lets just accept that for the sake of argument), it does not mean B can do the same. Hammas committing genocide does not mean Israel, a state with nuclear weapons and prosition weapons which they demonstrated in Lebanon when they killed Hammas leaders, can commit genocide.@@EytanKoch

@@samow7 Please do not put words in my mouth. I allowed for the argument that Israel is committing genocide when I prefaced my comment with "Whatever your views on Israel...." Nonetheless, no one is taking Hamas to international court, are they? Why not? You just agreed they use human shields, which is a violation of international law. Moreover, even if Israel IS committing genocide, South Africa’s case against Israel is a hypocrisy of enormous proportions. Soundbyte: South Africa could have arrested a guy called the Butcher of Darfur who the International Criminal Court indicted in 2009 for committing a genocide 20 times bigger than the one Israel is accused of committing. South Africa simply refused. Details: In 2009, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for the ex-Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir, also called the Butcher of Darfur, on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity for his involvement the long-running conflict in Darfur, where the United Nations estimates 300,000 people had been killed and more than two million had been displaced. Well, in June 2015, the Butcher was physically in South Africa, and South Africa refused to arrest him. In fact, Cuno Tarfusser, one of the ICC judges said this: “By not arresting Omar al-Bashir while he was on its territory between 13 and 15 June, 2015, South Africa failed to comply with the court’s request for the arrest and surrender of Omar al-Bashir, contrary to the provisions of the statute, thereby preventing the court from exercising its functions and powers under the statute in connection with the criminal proceedings instituted against Omar al-Bashir.” Israel has not touched a hair on the head of a single South African. So why does South Africa care about an alleged genocide where 21,000 died, perpetrated by Jews, but not an actual one, perpetrated by an Arab, where 300,000 died? I’m not trying to say South Africa is anti-semitic, but….

I think it would be better to ask, “Would you agree…” rather than “Would you agree with me…” The latter makes it personal. You definitely have a tell when you’re bothered that someone doesn’t agree with you, which is to squirm in your seat. You often explain Israel’s arguably over-zealous response to 10/07 as partially due to anger and vengeance. I don’t think enough attention is paid to the compounding effect of continuous shelling by Hamas. Israeli citizens have their own bomb shelters and have essentially turned the other cheek for years. It’s enough. I think that sentiment more than any existential threat is motivating Israel. You know what it’s like when your brother antagonizes you for the 100th time and you finally turn around and clock him. Finally, you are correct that religious fanaticism is a major impediment to peace, that Islamists are unmotivated by economics. However, their leaders ARE motivated by economics, hence the normalization of relations with other Arab states.

A major problem that Israel has had when dealing with the Palestinians is that the Palestinians have a very poor track record of coherence in their wants and desires. Israel can negotiate with the Palestinian Authority, or they can negotiate with Hamas, but who speaks for all of the Palestinian people? When has there ever been a time when the Palestinians were so united that you could go to one individual and understand that that person represented their desires? And this is a major reason why the Palestinians should not have their own state. They have not got the national direction and coherence that is necessary for such a thing to happen.

I recall he wedged it in with a few others and I was surprised because I wasn't aware the two of you had had anything to do with another. My beef with Sam is his Believe All Women nonsense. Although he walks it back every time he puts it forth, it is quite revealing as to where this man actually is emotionally. You might want to examine his work during the Kavanaugh hearings and on another video with a woman, I believe she may have been British, when he refers to being corrected by his British prosecutor friend as to how many sex crime allegations out of ten are often false. Sam thought it would be way less than one in ten, and very rare, the British prosecutor told him three or four out of ten or something to that effect. How the man of "reason" and "facts" could believe that is telling. The percentage of sociopaths, borderlines, histrionics, and garden variety narcissists in the population alone should make it obvious that millions of people are capable of rendering a false accusation should the right circumstances arise. Write a column on that and I will sing your praises (and phrases) forever. I can write properly. I can't see what I am doing here to edit.
