Live From the Table: Defining Anti-Semitism while Protecting Free Speech - Professor Jeffrey Sachs
Professor Jeffery Sachs tells us all that's wrong with the proposed Anti-Semitism Awareness Act. Does it violate the First Amendment? Is it hypocritical?
Professor Sachs wrote about it here: pen.org/the-wrong-way-to-figh...
Пікірлер: 91
In other words “they were hypocritical, which justifies me being hypocritical, which is why I’m not being hypocritical.” Great argument…

What are you referring to? How many times did we both say the law shouldn't be passed? Sheesh.
Apparently it's antisemitic to stand up for the human rights of the semitic people of PaIestine.
The AAA (*I mean the new antisemitism bill) is insane. I say this as someone who isn't from the US, but it still seems insane free-speech wise.

And when the people lose their freedom of speech in the end, they will blame it on the Jewish people.
IF it is passed and signed into law, it will be overturned at the first legal challenge. It is an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment on its face.
I'm a Jew and I do not support this bill. The reason is: I want to be able to criticize, e.g., female genital mutilation, the killing of apostates, the stoning of women for the crime of being raped, etc. If such criticisms are deemed 'Islamophobic' and outlawed, the world is not in a better place. Allowing the antisemitism bill to pass opens the door for similar bills outlawing criticisms of the kind just stated. Better to keep the lines of speech open, even if it's sometimes painful to do so.

This idea that campuses have silenced pro Palestinian voices on campuses is pretty ridicules. Every year they lotteraly have apartheid week on campuses.

I think that it is important to define what constitutes hate-speech, as distinct from whether or not it ought to be permitted.

I don't support it, but the issue was that our most Elite University's were unable to apply Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("provides that no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.") for the benefit of Jews, which our most Elite I.V. League University's admitted to in front of Congress. Title VI already protects Jews. This AAA bill sets forth examples that "may" be considered violations under the Civil Rights Act when University's endorse, support, or condone them. I think Title VI is perfect on its own and that we leave it to the courts to make determinations of what constitutes such university level bigotry against Jews on a case by case basis.

Proud of Jewish voices for peace. Proud of Simone Zimmerman. Watch her movie 'Israelism' please. It will help you make sense of Noam's podcast; why he sings the praises of Sam Harris, author of 'in defense of torture', but picks a fight with Rashid Khalidi and the director of Human Rights Watch.

very much enjoyed this. shoutout to prof sachs for the discussion.
"They think i'm that guy." There are worse mistaken identities, so consider yourself lucky. Thanks for the self-affirming discussion.
Alright, hear me out… Why can’t the hypocrisy be the basis for a Title VI lawsuit? By which I mean, if you find an analogous example of speech being curtailed for one group, you can make the case for disparate treatment for another group. For example, Julian von Abele (2018) should be able to sue Columbia for racial discrimination if it can be shown they have allowed analogous speech by Black students. I’m all-in on unfettered free speech on campuses. However, in the case of private universities, they need to start compelling dialogue. They are in the business of free exchange and analytical rigor. I would require any group wanting to protest to publicly debate the opposition in order to get a permit. If you protest and then refuse the debate, you’re expelled. Likewise, any speaker is allowed, but they must submit to a Q&A session of pre-determined length after speaking. This should be a contractual obligation, ie you don’t get paid if you don’t participate.

I don't see how it isn't antisemitic to say Israel shouldn't exist. You would have to have a complet misunderstanding of what antisemitism means to not think that is anti-Jewish. That is like saying saying America shouldn't exist isn't anti-American. I don't dislike Italians but I don't think their country should exist. Makes no sense. The problem here is one people don't understand the complexities of antisemitism nore do they understand the deep connection with Judaism and the land of Israel and Judaism and Zionism. They are deeply intertwined.

Actually, Jews have prospered outside of Israel and will continue to do so. Being against an ethnostate on principle is the furthest thing from bigotry.
