This is a live album performed in a single take (with one flub!) on the Ableton Push 3 standalone, Playdifferently Model 1 mixer, Erica Synths Zen Delay, and Meris Polymoon. I also used a Focusrite ADAT audio interface to route audio from the Push 3 to the Model 1.
At the heart of all my music is live performance, but this is the first time I have played a full set from front-to-back on a single setup. It includes stems from some favourites in my repertoire, and also some substantial reworkings of old favourites, and lots of additions to fill out the sound. It felt amazing to capture an entire album in a single pass.
There is a more detailed walkthrough of the setup on my Patreon, if that's your sort of thing.
00:00 - Nychthemeron
05:14 - Flame azalea
11:45 - Earthshine
17:45 - Youth on age
22:25 - Come back
27:45 - Lustral
33:43 - The prince
38:34 - Crisped pincushion
43:03 - Ostinato
Thanks for listening.

Remarkable. I can barely keep track of where I am on one simple track and here you are flipping and changing and arranging and playing live all over the shop! An absolute delight to listen to and an inspiring masterclass to watch Sir!
This is incredible! Thanks for sharing!
Amazing as usual! I needed this kind of escape today. Thanks again Jay!
This was a masterpiece. Thank you for creating & sharing. Keep on rockin’. 🎛🎚👑
So much fun listening to the variations after being so familiar with the album/video versions. Nicely done, man!
ive been looking for push performances the whole day, this is by far the best ive seen. Super impressive that its all in one take
Mind = blown. Sent shivers down my spine. Nice one Jay!
Fantastic production. You are an artist and a wizard.
I discovered your music a while ago and absolutely adore it. Especially Flame azalea. This track brings tears to my eyes. So much feelings. Thank you very much for everything. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪.
This was amazing. That model one sounds so goooooooood ❤
Absolutely sick performance!!
Wonderful sounds! Thank you Jay.
Awesome stuff, Jay, and glad to hear (on Elektronauts) that you've been loving your Push. Have been enjoying mine as well.
Absolutely loving this.
I had this setlist on repeat all night , last night - and once in a while , i took a glance out on my apartmentfloor - i had some friends over - which developed from a little gettogether , into a fullblown cocktail party , which just never seemed to end - and The Hoskingianna sound was that magic backdrop , never intruding but just a perfect backdrop for a damn fine allnighter - You -Jay - made that evening unforgetable,- do know - that not one day goes by , without a Jay Hosking tune has been played ,-
Im FLABBERGASTED 😮 this is Uber filmic, suspense and Drama - The Hoskingianna is STRONG in this one 😘✨👌You are such a rare breed, man -
Wonderful - thank you for sharing this! And best of luck playing it live in Seattle, hope you have lots of fun~
Very inspiring, I'm in the process of figuring out my live set as well. I would love a walkthrough about what Macros you have set up on Push! Cheers
This is so cool. You remade some of my favorites :)
Excellent work
Amazing sound and musical quality 😊

Well done Jay.

Already got an album on it is nuts! Good stuff
This is great!

nice work and I need to get that mixer those filters sound fresh af!
Wow, Jay. Ostinato is probably my favourite piece of yours and this version with the added synths and drums was incredible. I was hoping that you would add guitars at the end but then you played a guitar solo like lead on the push. Worked perfectly🙂
Perfect !
Ostinato has been one of my favorite tracks (I never knew the name of) since your live recording with the moog rig. another great video. Bravo, hope to catch you in a club someday.
Yep, model 1, zen and Push is the way to go. 🕉️
Yes outstanding all the time 😊

Oh, wow - this is kinda what I want to do as well. Pre-ordered the Push 3 a few days ago, but will have to save up for the Model-1 😅 this sounds fantastic!!
Fantástico equipamento sonoro e amazing music🎼🌆🎛️🎹🕺
Excellent. I love the remix of "Flame Azalea". A really great chord progression, but without the kit being on a mirror and recorded outside this time.
Incredibly nice set. Bravo. You should go on tour with TD.

Nice! I’m planning a somewhat similar setup, but with two Push 3 standalone, less tracks, but more fx. Same mixer but 1.4. Zendelay, H90, LVX and Analog heat+fx. The idea is to mix my tracks between the two temp matching by hand. This way I can create endless transitions and combinations on the fly. It’s a bit more expensive having two Push 3’s, but the fun should be more than double.

you lucky bas...😊, I would love to try that kind of setup, I just posted about that and then read this 😆.
I would like to try using 2 Push stand alones with a dj mixer, using them like my "decks". It will take time, I have to afford the first one yet 😆.
Very funny... this is the track I've been remixing! Had to look up whether "Nychthemeron" is a made up word or what 🤣 Very cool track.
Very nice set Jay, really enjoyed it! Glad you found a setup that suits your need for live playing 😃👍 I was wondering if you considered, for a while, integrating 1 or 2 "small" instruments in this setup like the Minitaur, Bass Station II, Minifreak nay Take 5...? (in order to be able to tweak some knobs live 😉 even if I'm aware that it would somehow complicate the performance 😅)
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
I definitely want to do this. The main reason I didn't was for simplicity of setup when I'm travelling. If space and setup time was no matter, I'd definitely have the Minitaur and maybe Nymphes on the table, and the Sub37 or similar to the side to play. But yeah, more gear means more wiring and more possibility of something going wrong, so I'm trying to simplify as much as possible. And thanks!

Best push 3 performance I’ve seen so far. Congrats! You are a Octatrack lover, does this means that your performance sequencer brain has change from now?
@JayHosking

Hey, thanks so much. I don't think this will change my relationship with the Octatrack. The Push 3 is amazing, but I see its main value in compiling a number of songs, some of which will still be created on the Octatrack. But who knows? Maybe I'll change my mind! Thanks again.
Hi Jay, very nice performance and setup ! I'm curious about the channels going into the Model 1, what was your strategy for grouping all the tracks into 6 channels ?
Good
This is simply amazing. Congrats!!! How did you master the sound after recording? Model 1 can not record separate tracks so did you use some Ozone only? Once again - stunning work.

Best I heard for a while. Does it help to reduce choices? How much of the sound character (soft saturation) comes from using the external boxes? Mix does not sound this "boxy" then, maybe.
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily trust my ears (it's just fun and lovely gear), but something tells me the Model 1 does some nice subtle work to the overall sound, especially bass. The effect sends really just allow me to perform and have fun, while also creating transitions and a seamless set. And thanks so much!

@@JayHosking Yes, from my experience, if you do "any" analog processing at all, the whole mix gets more liveliness and depths. Something out of the box makes a difference.
Very nice live set! The new Push seems to be a solid standalone device. Can it be paired with midi fighter or similar midi controller for master track beat repeat, etc effects?
@JayHosking

I haven't tried it, but considered that. I'll post something here if I ever get around to trying it!
Very musical. Are the crunchy drums from Ableton stock samples, processed how? There is a lovely lofi touch on everything, I'm really curious.
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
The drums come from all over the place. Some are hardware, some are loops, some are stock from Ableton or NI collections, some are Addictive Drums 2.
Awesome tracks and performance Jay! And I love to see the Push 3 in action this way. The performance fx you use, are they per track? Or on the master or on a group of tracks?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
Most are macros that are controlling multiple per-track effects, but some are on groups. I'd lose to do master, but there's no master out from the Push, only the individual outs! And thanks!
@martenmeij

@@JayHosking Ah, I get it, since you are using the ADAT outputs. Thanks!
Very Robert Milesy! :)
You only use audio loops? I still don't know how to switch to a new sound on the next track with a midi instrument? The track from top to bottom is always assigned to a synthesizer. If I change this, does it change completely for this track? Or can I work around this with the Instrument Rack? Kind regards
Very nice! But I must admit that I am a bit surprised that you haven't included the Octatrack as part of your "live setup". I get that this video is mostly about showcasing Push 3 and the Model 1 mixer. But the Octatrack has been such a central part of so many of your performances that I would have expected it to be irreplaceable for you in a live performance. In any case, keep it coming - I am always inspired by your jams!
@JayHosking
11 ай бұрын
I have definitely tried to incorporate the Octatrack into every live set I've built, including this one. But in this case, the OT's four inputs would limit my mixing; I'd want to have drums on the OT, and then I'm switching banks patterns on the OT, which is one more mental thing to juggle. As such, I skipped it for this setup, and think (in this current incarnation) I'll continue to skip for the moment. But I could see a simpler setup with just Push and OT in the future. I'm also building an OT set at the moment. AND bear in mind that a bunch of these tracks were built in OT to begin with! More OT soon!

16:30 - awesome drop. You have supreme control of these machines.
This is great! Congratulations for the hard work you put in. I just have one question. If you are sending 2 output signals from push into the interface, Why the model 1 is receiving 5 signals?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
I'm sending ADAT out to the audio interface. Max number of channels on ADAT is 8, or 4 stereo outs from the audio interface to the Model 1 mixer. The last stereo input to the mixer comes directly from the Push 3's audio output. Hope that helps. And thanks!

Stunning. What ADAT interface did you use out of interest?
@JayHosking

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd gen. And thanks so much!
I'm curious if you could have pulled this set off without the mixer, using an External Audio Effect device on a send channel for the FX, and EQ devices for the EQ. Definitely preferable to have hardware but it seems feasible that the 18i20 ADAT + Push could serve as a performance mixer solution for those of us that don't have a Model 1-caliber mixer on hand.
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
I think it could certainly be pulled off using the Push 3, sending stereo outs to one send effect (e.g. the Zen Delay), back in through the inputs, and then sending master through the headphone output. You could pair it with something like a Faderfox to have faders on the side, and use macros on the Push to do filtering. That way you wouldn't need mixer or audio interface. For sure!
wonderful ❤❤❤, what is your model of Focusrite interface ? I was thinking to buy one to have a similar live setup ...

I don't know how much I'll use it for song creation yet. But if you're looking to play full live sets, or even want to think of it as a multitimbral MPE synth, there's certainly value. I'll share more here when I try other use cases.
Did you have more fun performing Come Back on this setup or the Octa?😊

Is the Zen delay clock sync? can you please tell what is the buffer size, round trip latency ? Is it monitored THRU the push 3 ableton via spdif??
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
The Zen delay is definitely not clock synched here. I use the tap tempo quite a bit, but also do a lot of dialling in by hand. I have no idea what the round trip latency is. Virtually undetectable. I'm using 64 or 128 buffer, can't remember. The output of the mixer goes to an audio interface where it's recorded, just a stereo in. Hope that helps.

@@JayHosking thanks, i am trying to figure out if Push 3 can tightly handle an external clocked synced device which is monitored THRU it - with no computer. so far i could achieve it only with top notch audio interfaces + macbook
Hi Jay. Are you finding that you can make it through a live set without the Push 3 crashing? I'm looking into it for that purpose, but hearing many reports of it crashing while in use
@JayHosking
6 ай бұрын
I had a crash when I played it live in a club, but during the recording of this set/video, and in all my time preparing, it didn't crash at all. If I had to guess, it crashed during the club set because it had been running/idling for longer, but I don't truly know.
Does the adat audio interface send out to 6 tracks on the model 1? So u can control 6 tracks separately. Is that 10 stereo outs for 6 tracks? Love the vid

ADAT sends four stereo outs, plus one more stereo out from the Push 3 itself. And yes, that gives you control over five separate tracks on the mixer. And thanks!
