Live Aid - Rockin' All Over The World (4/6)
Documentary telling the story of the day that music rocked the world. Bob Geldof recalls how, after 12 weeks of manic preparation, the big day finally arrived. But would it work, would the punters watch, and more importantly would they part with their cash?
Bob Geldof and his team recall their fear of how the whole thing might fall apart at any minute. Stars from the day itself - Elton John, Queen, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, U2 and a whole host of others - remember walking out to face a crowd of 72,000 and a global audience of billions. And those who watched it at home, including Tony Blair, JK Rowling and Helen Fielding, recall how they didn't miss a minute of this extraordinary event.

I think Queen's performance was not just the best performance of the day but still to this day the best performance I've EVER seen in pop and rock.

I love all these comments about how Queen at Live Aid was, is & always be the best live performance in history!
Queen at live aid - a unique phenomenon
Queen had the advantage of playing stadiums and arenas, and the great Freddie Mercury having mastered how to command and own the crowd, so no surprise they stole the entire show.
Dave Grohl was right, Queen was the only act you ended up remembering after Live Aid. They took everyone.

U2
The thing about Queen was that playing stadiums is something they had grown accustomed to. A lot of the bands here did not do nearly as many shows like that as Queen. Not only that but Queen actually practiced a set so they could get a bunch of songs played. Some of the other bands barely got 2 songs done while Queen did parts of some and mixed them to get around 6 or 7 out

That was called preparation on Queen's part and it paid off. The truth is, though, the Wembley bill was pretty awful for bands. There were only about three good live bands that played: Queen, The Who, U2 and possibly Dire Straits. The rest of the bill was made up of cheesy '80s pop stars and has beens who hadn't played for literally years.

Midge Ure was also a big part of producing it, tho. Queen was a last-minute addition, as they were having internal issues to deal with at the time the concert was being put together. Had they declined to appear, the show would have still gone on - albeit with one less act.
RIP Freddie. A little bit of me is glad you're not around now to see the manufactured shit that inhabits the charts that you're genuis once owned. RIP. Your like will quite literally never be seen again.

Elton and Freddie were great friends too. In fact, Elton was just about the only other star that was invited to his funeral. Bowie sent some flowers.

The turn table was built on top of the stage, postioned in the centre so they could be setting up the heavy equipment for one band, taking away the euipment for another while another band was playing. But as you can see from the video the platform was raised as you can see the ropes. The stage was already left up, they placed the platform on top of that.

QUEEN!!!!! xx SF
Queen.. 👑 They were the Best !!! But yet they were nervous.... ❤
Live Aid was before my years so I don't know an awful lot about it, and am seeing it out of the context of the time...watching this documentary I actually find most of it really irritating. For a big fundraising event, all I am seeing are people whinging, posturing, acting totally self important, complaining about who went on in what order and who said what to who, etc. BUT...the bit where Queen performs actually made me choke up, just from the sheer awesomeness. Man, I wish I was there.
I just realised what's missing! No dickheads on their mobiles taling feckin photos all the time... yep them were the days!!!
It must have sucked for ALL the bands who went on after Queen he he
Ian Astbury is so cool sitting on the couch just smoking.
The fact that he is less popular than Queen doesn't make him less right
@abrokenplate As someone who actually watched Live Aid as it happened I can tell you that Queen WHERE the whole show!
“Bob said don’t be smart, just cram in your best hits, not your latest single you want to plug. That’s what we did. We really tightened it down and made sure the equipment was good and just treated it like any other gig.” Brian May “Oh my god darling. I’d have shit myself if I thought I was playing to the biggest crowd in history.” Laughs. Freddie Mercury

You may think Dire Straits were crap. However, Mark Knopfler is widely acknowledged as one of the world's finest fingerstyle guitar players. He IS a talented musician, and a far better guitarist than, say, the Edge from U2, who just plays one riff and is lost without his echo pedal!

@@MALONEYCAMFIELD I may do so in the future. But it's not clear what you mean by 'effects'. That's more common in movie and TV production (i.e. 'special effects') than in 'music' per se. If you listen to U2's recordings, they dont rely heavily on 'trickery' - they always let the basic core of their sound come through. The closest thing to a 'trick' recording they did was on the "Unforgettable Fire" album. A track on it is a song of theirs (minus vocals) run backwards and slowed down, with Bono improvising lyrics over it.

I don't think it was half. I think you're meaning the beginning of Radio Gaga. Synths and sequencers weren't banned at Live Aid, other artists were using them. Every artist cheats to some extent - where would U2 have been without the echo pedal?
