Little Owls | Feeding one week old chicks | Breeding Birds Of Prey

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

One week on from hatching we catch up with the Little Owl chicks.
Have a look at the first video and you'll soon realise they are now twice the size - weighing between 21g and 27g. They hatched at between just 10g and 12g!
- What is happening to the chicks?
Two chicks went straight back to the parents, two days after hatching, to be parent reared. They are doing well!
The other four have stayed with me as they are being hand reared. This is because they are going to be flown as educational ambassadors. They are going to live with other falconers I know and trust, who will work with them correctly and free fly them.
These owls are captive bred, not taken from the wild. It is illegal in the UK to release captive bred birds into the wild. I breed a very small number of birds where there is demand from other falconers.
A few other quick facts about them:
- Their eyes will start to open in the next couple of days.
- They will be fully feathered and ready to fly at just 6 weeks, and will be giving it a good go before then!
- They are eating raw mouse today. They can only eat raw meat. They do not eat seeds or leaves. I give them a diet that nutritionally matches a typical diet for a Little Owl in the wild. It is a mixed whole carcass meat diet.

    its humans screwing up the world, not the so called pandemic. humans are the virus and covid19 is a rather ineffective cure. sadly. tilling a mere 100.000 under, out of an 8 billion strong army of planet eaters (that grows by 80 million per year) isnt going to cut it. still, grounding all those wandering death birds (jumbo jets) and making lots of humans unemplyed (and with any luck crashing the economy) is the best thing thats happened to the planet and its other inhabitants since the second world war.

    @Autigers2010 shut up. 60 000 Americans are dead (more worldwide but I dont know those numbers offhand) because of COVID 19. Calling it a scam is not logical, nor is it kind. Nor is it correct. But, when did you let a little thing like the truth stop you or your ilk from spreading your hate?

    Imprinting in birds is a visual process which takes differing amounts of time depending on species. Not sure how long it is for owls.

    Couple of questions if I may. Do the chicks have a sense of smell (or any bird of prey for that matter)? Your "tapping on their beaks" made me wonder. Second, notice something along the side of their head. Would this be where their ears are located? Thanks for your videos, love them.

  • @catzkeet4860

    @catzkeet4860

    No owls don’t have a sense of smell. Very few birds do. She was tapping their beak to get them to show a feeding response which means they open their beak(gape) to allow the food to be placed inside. And yes at this age, before their proper feathers grow in, you can see the holes for their ears on their heads. Birds don’t have external ear flaps or pinnae like mammals. Their ears externally, are just little holes that are covered by feathers in adults.
