Powering Down and Lower Base Disassembly:
- Press the Power button to turn the unit off and unplug it from the wall. Remove the bonnet, globe, and waste drawer.
Disassembly and Removal:
- Remove the bonnet, globe, and waste drawer and set them aside.
Open up the control panel and start disassembling the lower face using the Phillips screwdriver.
- Remove the 5 screws that hold the control panel in place then pop the panel off while pushing in on one of the buttons to leave the controls in the right place.
- Remove the DFI kit.
Install new DFI Board Assembly:
- Free the gray ribbon cable. Lift the DFI board retainers off the base.
- Orient the new DFI board assembly and secure with screws.
- Connect the black wires and feed DFI wires through the hole.
- Reassemble the base halves.
Pinch terminal installation:
- Using needle-nose pliers, gently grab each of the old pinch contacts and wiggle and lift them out of the assembly.
- Start with the top one and use a small-blade screwdriver to help position the contact properly, ensuring it's fully seated in its slot.
- Ensure that when finished, both metal pieces of the pinch contacts touch each other.
- Reconnect the black wires to the pinch terminals, noting that they are interchangeable.
- Gently press one wire onto each pinch terminal, ensuring they are fully inserted.
- Confirm that the connections look correct and secure.
Reassembly:
- Tighten base screws.
- Reconnect 4-pin connector.
- Secure tape over wires and replace the wire retainer plug.
- Reassemble the bezel, ensuring wires are tucked in.
- Tighten bezel screws without overtightening.
- Reassemble the globe, bonnet, and waste drawer.
- Plug in, turn on, and let the initial clean cycle finish. Verify proper cycling

**You will need a 6" screwdriver** First, thank you Litter Robot for providing this video. For the most part this is all you need to perform this repair. I was a little worried when the replacement part had MUCH smaller circuit boards. The old ones were 4.5 inches long, filling the holders. The new ones were only about an inch, but they appear to be working. Our litter box starting saying it was full after a single use. We would reset it in the app but the very next use it said it was full again. The DFI replacement kit solved this problem. If you're doing this and debating whether or not to replace the Pinch Detect Terminals, just do it. This is not an overly complicated procedure as long as you have a long, 6" or longer, screwdriver. An extension will not help as it will not fit in the holes. I was a bit perturbed when I got to the bottom screws and realized a standard 4" shaft screwdriver is not long enough. Having to make an extra trip to buy a long screwdriver after you have reached this step was highly annoying. A simple statement of required tools would have saved me that trouble. I will, however, give Litter Robot major props for making this system very serviceable. So many manufacturers make their products impossible or extremely difficult to work on. The fact that most of the maintenance and cleaning you will need to do requires little effort is impressive.

I watched this whole video and then went through the installation - coming back to look at the video for every step. After going through this, I understand that the original two pinch plates were badly out of line. I replaced everything slowly and carefully and it seems like out Litter Robot 3 is working perfectly now. An added benefit of going through this procedure is that I understand better how it works and could more easily fix it in the future. By the way, I came across some taped-up plastic lump with 2 wires coming out of it. I didn't know what it was and just pushed it out of the way so that it wouldn't interfere with the motor. Uh.... it turns out that it was the magnetic globe positioning sensor and it gave me the red-then-yellow-then-blue lights. I found the globe positioning sensor video, put it in the right place and NOW it's finally a success.

It was good to have the video, though it would helped if the photographer had shifted viewpoints more instead of taking a rather static position. We had a ton of trouble from the design removing the 9 screws once you flipped it over. There simply wasn't clearance for a regular screwdriver to reach down into the deeply countersunk holes.

A standard 4" shaft #2 Phillips screwdriver will not work for all of the bottom screws. A 6" or longer will work. I always watch the video at least once through before doing anything to make sure I have everything I need and am mentally prepared for the task. There is NOTHING worse than watching the video feeling all prepared only to find out you need to run out and buy something after you've nearly disassembled everything! And you better hurry before kitty needs to go. A simple disclosure in the beginning would have prepared me better.

My husband and I just spent an hour watching this video and attempting to fix it ourselves. It’s very involved, the camera angles are not great, and we both became so frustrated that we had to stop and walk away several times and we aren’t wound up people. The attempting to put all the wires back under the motor and not have anything touch is not just “a little tricky”. I don’t even know if it fixed the issue yet - for this price you should have people to fix these issues because this was beyond a simple repair and we have 2 litter robots that both broke down so we have to attempt this 2x and I’m thinking of just throwing them in the street because it is that difficult to fix.

Maybe you're not very mechanically inclined. That's okay. It really is easier the second time. Once you've girls with wires through the hole and replaced the tab, run the wires through the channel below the motor and put a piece of duct tape over it. Then run them through the next channel after the bend. It's okay to use small pieces of tape to keep the wires in place. Just make sure you don't get any tape on the motor or the sprocket.

This video was *mostly* very helpful. But if you ever make it again, showing the actual things instead of "make sure this is behind here" would be really helpful. I have no idea if I got my second pinch detector piece in right and won't get to know until I finish reassembling since I can't tell before then. 🙃

Yeah, the video could use a few closeups from a good angle. For example, it was impossible to see exactly where the pinch plates were located, or how they were oriented which is pretty important. Everything that the user needs to see is hidden around 7:00.

Like any piece a machinery, it needs to be maintained! It’s not a one and done thing. This video was so helpful and solved my issue. $45 bucks for replacement parts, took me about 45 minutes vs paying them $180 to fix it for me. I love my robot and it’s worth the investment and maintenance that comes with it. When it was in warranty, I had an issue and got a full replacement! Great product and company. Going on 4 years next month for my bot. 😌

Very helpful video. I did get my non-functioning robot working again, watching along with the vid as I worked. One suggestion though: use more close ups to see exactly what's being done, and what the presenter is talking about. It took me about 15 minutes to get the DFI circuit boards oriented correctly. I couldn't clearly see it from the video, so had to do a bunch of trial and error before I got it right. Also a note for consumers, understand this is a skilled expert in the vid doing the repair, using a brand new unit (?), that looks like it's never been used. My robot for example, had litter sprinkled around/on the motor, and other places, so I had to wipe that off, etc. Just expect it to take a bit longer, and maybe not be quite as easy as the video shows. BUT, it is completely do-able, and my robot is thankfully working normally again : ) Thanks

The repair was very simple and straight forward, and the part was cheap and affordable. I’m appreciative that a company lets us repair a high end machine, and lets us purchase the parts necessary to conduct the repair. AND provides a video giving step by step directions on how to conduct the repair. I didn’t have an appropriate screw driver so I went to Home Depot and spent $8 on one that would get the job done. These folks complaining certainly don’t have an appreciation for their Right to Repair. This is especially true when you look at a company like say, Apple, that designs their phone’s batteries to become obsolete after 2-3 years and all but forces you to purchase a newer model… be happy you’re able to repair the machine vs being forced to buy a new one. The video could have used more close ups on the finer details, but all in all I was able to figure out what to do. Thanks y’all, love the product.

Replacement was not difficult after watching this very helpful video. You do need a long neck screw driver with magnet head so you can get the screws out easily. So I had to make a trip to the local hardware store for the screwdriver. But once I got started, it took about 20 minutes. The litter robot is back working as it should.

This is the go to instructions for replacing anything on the Litter Robot 3. Mine came with a little different wiring and the pinch sensor boards weren't the same. The boards are smaller and the wiring that gets replaced was different than what was on it, and what they sent me to fix the problem . I don't know if it's some new kind of sensor that works better or not, but when I finally got everything put back together and set. IT WORKED!!!! And the BLUE LIGHT WAS SOLID NOT BLINKING ONCE AGAIN!!! i hope this is the last time I have to do this. but after taking apart the whole thing I found places where the litter went that I don't have access to normally. I always try to shake it out first before cleaning, I'm just glad it's back in service and my cats thank you as well!!! Hurray!!!! No more scooping!!!

Video tip: I do not need to see the repair guy's face, I need to see what each step should look like when complete. You need better angles and more close ups of what his hands are doing. You also don't provide this exact DFI kit anymore, you need a new video with the new kit. This did the trick for me. Thank you. The only problem now is that after a cycle the robot returns to its position but at a slight angle; so if you're looking at the front like a clock face, 12pm is the correct position. Well mine returns but it positions itself to 1pm instead. Also, once the cycle is complete, the dashboard lights up (all 3 lights) and needs to be manually reset to get the robot back into ready mode. On another matter, I have to counter some of the criticism I've read on here. The company have been very responsive with me. They have patiently answered my questions online, gave timely responses and recommendations on repair and processed my order efficiently. The team are absolutely ace and from my personal experience, I have nothing but praise. As for the robot - I've had mine for 5 years and this is the first repair its needed. It is an unbelievable piece of kit and performs perfectly well for my needs. It hasn't let me down in the past and consistently completes its job with little attention from me. The unit is transformative and sets the standard in this growing industry. Expensive yet, but if you're buying to avoid the daily scoop ritual then it is worth every penny. I wouldn't be without mine.

I've had my litter robot 3 for 4 years now. I bought the extended warranty with the thought that after that amount of time, if it broke, it would still be worth it to not have to scoop two cats poop multiple times a day. During the warranty period I had some issues that customer service helped me to fix each time. One of the times they sent me this kit. I replaced the DFI at that time, but not the pinch detect terminals. Fast forward to two years later, out of warranty, and the pinch terminals are corroded. Lucky for me I saved all of the things that were sent to me two years ago, and I was able to replace the pinch terminals by myself. This simple (not so simple, but absolutely worth it to not have to buy another unit right now) fix is going to extend the life of my machine for at least another year or two, maybe 4! I love the Litter Robot and will absolutely be buying another when this one finally kicks the bucket. Worth every penny.

Seems to have fixed my 3.5 year old refurb LR3. Got a little over eager with cleaning and fried the DFI sensors apparently. Had a flashing blue light that I couldn’t resolve. Also replaced the pinch sensors that were corroded. I’d recommend gloves because there was urine and litter in about every crevice. Also a fairly long skinny screwdriver would have made it easier.

Thank you. This was a good video. Overall my only recommendation is that you show some close-ups of certain things such as where exactly the pinch sensors are. I was able to pull them out based on your instructions easily, but I wasn’t really sure where they came from and it took me some time to figure out how to reassemble since there aren’t any close-ups.

My LR3 suddenly stopped working after cleaning it. The rapid yellow blinking light says it is the pinch sensors. I took it apart and cleaned them thoroughly, but it still won't work. I even tried bypassing the metal tabs by connecting the two contacts directly...taken it apart 3x now and still no luck. I've already ordered the DFI replacement kit. I'm hoping that once all the parts are replaced that it works again. *UPDATE: one week later I got the new DFI & pinch sensor kit and replaced everything exactly as shown in this video. Im happy to report that my LR3 is now working again! It seems the issue was the DFI sensors gone bad even though the website says rapid yellow blinking means pinch sensor. The problem is these two parts are connected, so if one goes bad it can be tough to diagnose which one. Some people have had luck disconnecting the metal tabs and connecting the two pinch wires directly, but if that doesn't work just replace the entire kit with the dfi sensors. Luckily the new ones seem more robust so they should hold up.

.."behind the other connector..." Behind it facing the litter drop or behind it facing the outside of the unit? I rolled my eyes so many times. Not being able to see if you did the connections correctly (solved by simply showing the finished action) was EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. While am somewhat mechanically skilled, I am not able to cognitively understand things without visually seeing them; a big miss on ALL of LR's vids. I was so upset knowing that I could assemble it incorrectly and would not known I had until I tried to operate the unit. Please re-do these vids SLOWER and provide more visualizations of product repairs. And I also followed directions to a tee. Blinking lights. I refuse to take it apart again (make sure you have a extra long screwdriver with a magnetic tip. The screws are death to put back in.) I'm out of warranty but the can have this machine back. Too much trouble for the money it's worth.

I had this same issue and the solution was to offer me to send in to repairs and get a 6mo warranty for $180 or buy a new base without connectivity for $174.50 or with connectivity for $199.50. A little pissed since I paid $40 for parts and it was a bitch and a half to take apart, repair, put together, and have it not work. I repaired it only for the pinch error code and now the DFI error code is the one going off. And now the solution is to have me pay more money for another part that will inevitably break too

If you can work off of audio alone this is perfect, if not this is not the instruction guide for you. The video does not show up close parts so you have no idea if its correct until the whole this is put together. The "easy" parts were a lot more complicated than this guy made it look. I couldnt tell if i connected the wires correclty or not. Had to plug in my litterbot to figure out that it was all wrong and didnt fix anything. Waiting to hear back from the company on where to send it for someone like the guy in the video to fix it, seeing as he knows what he's doing and I still don't. The other part was the fact that they sped up the video as he was unscrewing everything, way to make it easy for someone to follow along instead of having to stop and pause and continue that process for 17+ minutes

I just did this replacement. It seems like the old part (mine was from 2021) had a design flaw in that it had a large PCB exposed to the air, leaving it vulnerable to corrosion. The new replacement part seems redesigned -- the PCB is much smaller and it's covered in more plastic. So i suspect it will last longer than the old one. Thanks for addressing this with a design change.

There is obviously a reason if you purchased before a certain date you are eligible for a free DFI and pinch replacement kit. What was the reason? I just replaced mine and noticed a few differences between mine and the replacement parts. Everything was reassembled just as I had taken it out, and the robot works, so clearly there was an issue with the hardware, not the installation.

I am really not interested in rebuilding the thing that I paid extra for a warranty for... I am hoping they just send me a new base for it.

1:36 I've watched this 20 times and still can't tell which wire I'm supposed to pull. The first angle is completely covered by a plastic tab and then the cameraman moves to the left so the new shot is covered by his hand. Feels like an intern shot this, not a professional. I'm not a photographer but its *painfully* obvious to me that if you want to shoot something in a persons hand you should shoot from the OPPOSITE side of the arm they're holding it in so their body isnt blocking the shot. Guess I'll just pull one of the two 4 pin wires back here and I'll find out if it was the right one in an hour when it either works or I have to start over from the beginning because between the guy demonstrating, the camera person and the editor nobody ever considered the audience might want to be able to see what they're supposed to be doing. If you're gonna outsource warrenty repairs that most businesses do themselves onto the customer you could at least provide training material that doesn't leave the repair up to guesswork.

Found out the two wires are both 8 pin, there's only one 4 pin. I was confused because the wire he shows clearly has a black connector. We don't get anything remotely resembling a close up so that's all I could tell. Both of my 8 pins are black and my 4 pin is white so I guess they just use whatever color they feel like that day. Doesn't help with the repair process, that's for sure. Mine didn't have braided cables like his either, all my wire bundles are straight. These inconsistencies are frustrating when you're trying to copy what he does while already having such a hard time seeing it.

6:58 this is unbelievable. NOBODY thought the viewers might need to see any of what was going on? How hard is it to shoot a top down angle? Was the person filming doing it while blindfolded? How do you see this in your viewfinder and not IMMEDIATELY recognize you're missing 90% of the useful information? Also, GET CLOSER!!! 70% of what's in the shot is irrelevant to the video. All I need to see right now is the pinch sensor and the DFI. He says "make sure it's on this side of the plastic". Using the video only, I challenge anyone to tell me WHICH SIDE. He's referring to a half inch by quarter inch dark colored plastic tab that's obscured by the side of the pinch sensor, his hand and the shadows that's 4 feet away from the camera. How does an editor watch this and not tell the crew "hey you need to reshoot this shot, it's literally physically impossible to tell what you're talking about"????? Then immediately after he tells me to put one piece "behind" another despite the fact that the two pieces are parallel with each other. DO YOU MEAN TO THE LEFT OR TO THE RIGHT? DO YOU MEAN UNDERNEATH IT OR ON TOP OF IT? "BEHIND" COULD MEAN EITHER WAY!!! If I keep pointing out everything so obviously wrong with this video I'll spend more time doing that than fixing this litterbox.

What a junk sensor. I don't know what the engineers were thinking leaving an exposed circuit board in the drawer of the machine where it will inevitably corrode and fail. I must assume its planned obsolescence. Frustrating.

This video is totally outdated. I had to pay for a new set of sensors abt $40 and the new sensors are half the size of the old ones. No video exists online I could find to install the new sensors. Litter Robot owes a refund to all that purchased new sensors without showing how to install them the worst part is lining up the 4 pin connector they shld say what the color orientation is. Great machine but horrible to maintain.

Absolutely ridiculous to drop $1200 for two of these, both stopped working within several weeks of out of warranty. You don't expect this kind of sh#! when you pay this much for "robots". Feeling like taking a sledgehammer to both . . . . don't recommend that anyone purchase these!!!
