LIKE SO MORE PEOPLE CAN SEE ACC QUOTES FORM: Form: A Christmas Carol is written in third person as it was a Victorian tradition to tell ghost stories around winter and especially Christmas. The story was released 6 days before christmas. It is also a novella - a short novel. The story isn’t a long novel because Dickens’ target audience of employer's, higher class' and middle class' would be too busy to read it over a long period of time. Therefore the story can be read in a short space of time and Scrooge’s one night experience can be immersed by the people that Scrooge is supposed to represent. Dickens therefore allows the reader to observe Scrooge’s redemption retrospectively Stave 1 “Marley was dead, to begin with” - NAR Supernatural, Redemption ‘Was’ Implies that Marley is going to come back, as ‘Was’ is a past participle of ‘is’, which shows certainty in the phrase ‘Marley WAS dead’, this would be a deliberate attempt to create intrigue by Dickens as at the time of the novellas creation, the mainly Victorian audience were into Gothic and ghostly stories, this phrase would especially attract the attention of the audience and somewhat force them to listen to his narrative full of messages to help improve the then class system. However the quote could also be read as if Marley had died, the alive narrator gives the impression of familiarity and humanity, so phrases such as the one above could make the reader read the words as if told by a friend, this creates uncertainty in the readers head as the original line reads ‘Marley was dead’ makes a intriguing and unknown start to the novella to draw even more interest from the reader and also to help the reader relate the later story to the beginning of the text throughout, putting it abruptly at the beginning shows the sudden nature of death. This is expressed later at the end of stave 3 when the ghost of Christmas present is sitting it is revealed the mortality of the spirits which becomes a lesson to scrooge but also brings up the memories of Marley’s death, which is the perfect precursor to the big reveal of Scrooge’s death in stave 4. “A Squeezing, Wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!” - NAR Greed, Fear, Religion, Redemption Scrooge is presented as a fearful; desperate; covetous; and a demonic man through this semantic field of desperation and other imagery throughout the introduction of scrooge. “Grasping, scraping’ are adjectives in this semantic field, desperation that knows no bounds, but could also show him being survivalist, ‘Grasping’ is grabbing with vigour which is used to convey people just barely grabbing on for human life, he fears that he will live the life of the poor and be seen as such. This shows that scrooge sees money as life, even to the point where, in the quote, he quite violently tries to gain and keep his bundles of currency. This is to juxtapose with the later scrooge in stave 5 which both ends the theme of violence and desperation in the description of scrooge and shows scrooge giving to the poor. Dickens wanted to make fun of the richer class by presenting them as sociopaths which only cared about the conservation of their money. Fred references this later, saying that scrooge ‘don’t do anything good with (his money)’ which, as Fred reflects the lower middle class, shows the richer of the audience how people perceive them, showing them for how they really are, scrounging, greedy, and childish. ‘Sinner’ is a word that is used to convey scrooge as a devil, further showing the perception of everyone else on them, it is also repeated several times in stave one, especially the dogs in the alleyways bowing down to him as if he were a ‘dark lord’. Which presents richer people as not only greedy but also sacrilegious which was set up by Dickens to offend the higher class protestants, some who’d pledged their allegiance to the queen and therefore god. “He was all in a Glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled” - NAR Family Scrooges Nephew, Fred, is presented as a kind and generous man in a Christmas Carol, through the Semantic field of light and handsomeness, in his introduction. “He was all in a glow’ could show how he has been running excitedly to the counting house, as we know, he is Fan’s child, and the original introduction of Fan included the line ‘she darted in’, this immediately makes an impression on Scrooge, which he dismisses in stave one. This shows the familial love which Fred has towards scrooge, the same which Fan had, but scrooge didn’t, because Fred was the reason for Fans death, it is quite possible that Fan’s demise is one of the main reasons why Scrooge has ended up this way, feeling as though ‘another idol’ has replaced her, to wit, he cannot love like he did his sister all those years before. But these actions also served for familiarity which, though putting scrooge on edge, also broke down his arguments as he was flustered by it all. “glow” could also show the architype of Fred’s character, he is a generous man, light is symbolised throughout the Novella as ‘Generosity’, which we see in stave 4 when he offers support to the Cratchets after Tiny Tims demise, Fred has a lot of, he also argues for giving to the charity when the workers invade the counting house asking for a donation. “If they would rather die, they better do it, and decrease the surplus population” -SCRO Redemption, Social injustice Scrooge, as the antagonistic protagonist, is represented as an unlovable, unforgivable, even fascist in nature with his suppression of the poor, all in an attempt to create a political diatribe of the Victorian parliament and Populus and show the horrible perception the rich have on the poor in the hope to change society’s attitude towards charity and the poor. “Rather die” is a juxtaposition, psychologically no one really wants to die, unless they do not perceive the implications of death. This could prove to immediately show Dickens message as he believes the only way that the poorer will grow is if they get educated, the implication that they don’t even understand the implications of death proves this. But this is the vision of the more fortunate, scrooge himself has never been poor, he is “old money” and doesn’t really understand humanity when it comes to people who will only slow his cashflow, it’s how he was taught. It is implied in stave 2 that his father is abusive, and Scrooge probably picked up many of his father’s traits, whether he liked it or not. This move by Dickens makes readers think about the fault of this, ironically education had changed the way that scrooge had perceived others. “Surplus Population” is a reference to the Thomas Malthus book on the economy, where he stated that the better the time is, the poorer will have children, then when we run out of recourses that’s when the recession will hit again. This message was supposed to warn the poorer of the population to be careful and save money in the best of times but however the parliament used this argument against the poor, making the controversial “poor law” to supress the poorer classes. This mindset is shared with scrooge and the other rich people in the story, this, though not prominent in the 19th century, would be seen as a fascist ideal. “I Wear the chains forged in life” - MARL Redemption, Super Natural Marleys Ghost is used to symbolise scrooges future spirit as Marley has led a similar life to him. It could be argued that Marley has chosen to remain chained up, using the verb “wear” shows this as if you’re to wear something you can normally take it off, this could be a message by dickens to show that the richer people like Scrooge and Marley are choosing to wear these “chains” that hold them down. Maybe even going to say that this is some form of purgatory, the land between heaven and hell. Having to wait for eternity, to unlink the chains that bind them to the ground to be able to go henceforth into heaven. Victorian Britain would’ve believed this and would think about their ways, believing that it could save them from the eternal misery of being stuck, chained to earth. Stave 2 “A little girl, much younger than the boy, came darting in” - NAR Family Fan, Scrooges younger sister, is seen as the other half of Scrooge, being kind, loving, and having a family, albeit for a short time as she died in childbirth. Fans death effected Scrooge like some of the other tragic people and events in his life that lead him to the point in stave one whereas he is known as a “cold” man, being separated from fan, belle, and Marley. “Darting” is a quite powerful verb, meaning that she isn’t just running in but running in quickly. We know that she is only a “little girl” and “darting in” shows this child like innocence

and adventure. Dickens created many child characters in his story’s, and most to all of them are there as devices for meanings. Like his story, Oliver Twist, where he shows the poor children of London and Bill Sykes who indoctrinates them to pickpocket. Fan here is to show what Scrooge should be like as a child, but instead he is “solitary”. His memory in stave one is jumbled between reality and fiction, talking of ali baba, a character from a book he read. Fan is the “other side” of scrooge, the part of scrooge we only see in stave 5 when he is “as light as a feather, as happy as a schoolboy”, but happiness as himself as a schoolboy wasn’t present, it was implied that his father was an abusive man, and scrooge himself took the fall for most of it. Dickens wanted to show the importance of treating children correctly and providing care for them, just like in Oliver Twist, just like a Christmas carol. “he has the power to render us happy or unhappy” - SCRO Fezziwig is the exact juxtaposition of Scrooge when it comes to being a role model and boss. And this quote “he has the power to render us happy or unhappy” shows the true nature of both. Fezziwig uses this power to render people happy, throughout the scene of Fezziwigs party, he is seen as a “jovial” man, something which was described in his introduction semantic field of Christmas itself. Fezziwig did what Scrooge had vowed to do in stave 4, being to celebrate Christmas like its “all year”. Fezziwig is the example of a good boss, dickens presented him as such to appeal to the bosses whom will be hearing this story, the story is short for this reason, people are buisy and don’t typically have the time of day to read or preform a long book. dickens wanted to change this culture where bosses have to be cruel and make their workers unhappy. This could be attuned to the experience of dickens in his early life where his father was sent to debters prison and he was sent to work at the blacking factory whereas the working conditions were poor. This could be a personal response by dickens to make sure other children don’t meet his fate. “Another idol has replaced me” - BELLE Redemption, family Belle has been quite loyal to Scrooge, though in the story we don’t get too many examples but it is proven in stave 2 when belle is trying to get away from him. “Idol” implies a love, it is said in the next line of dialogue that a “golden” idol has replaced her. This shows how Scrooge became so obsessed about money that it effected his relationship with belle, this move made by dickens is to create an idea of how money, in both extremes, can pull relationships apart. Scrooge was very hurt by this, he says in stave one that “marriage” is not a worthy endeavour, which could be a “wall” between himself and society, trying to say that he doesn’t agree on marriage but in reality he is hurt that he was unable to have a family, especially when the spirit goes on to say that belle went on to have a family with another man after this interaction. Stave 3 “To shed its light on scrooge” - NAR Supernatural, redemption “Light” in a Christmas carol always means generousity and kindness which, Scrooge did not have in stave one, being described “cold” and a piece of “flint” that couldn’t strike “generous fire” . The spirit of Christmas present, a pun in itself, is the representation of Christmas in the 1800s, which isn’t too far off modern day Christmas. It was seen as a day of giving and the spirit was the representation of this. “Shed its light” is quite a common phrase which means to reveal something, Scrooge in this quote is being forced to be generous by the spirit, like how Christmas does year in year out. This was made by dickens to show Christmas as a time of giving and to show that everyone has the ability to change, to wit the audience that needed to change in his eyes as the poor crisis was getting worse. “Ill give you mr scrooge, the founder of the feast” - BOB Family, Poverty This quote by Cratchet is quite strange, but it however shows his character and also shows how poor people are human like everyone else and how he appriciates his little amount money. Scrooge is a bad boss, he doesn’t pay well, to the point where Bobs smallish family struggles with the amount he is paid, however bob remains hopeful and thankful for his employment. “Founder” is used to show that without his wealth he wouldn’t be eating right now, this statement can be seen as ironic as scrooge doesn’t appreciate the waste of money, being described as ‘covetous’ and hoarding, Dickens showed this irony to make fun of the rich for living a poor mans life, showing that happiness is in family, generosity, and appreciation over money, which is why that day, the only people to be having Christmas dinner are the poorer classes whilst the rich try to remain in business. “This boy is ignorance, this girl is want”. - GCP Supernatural Ignorance and Want, according to dickens, are the horsemen of the issue of the poor law issues in Victorian England. Ignorance, represents the rich, as scrooge is uncultured to the struggles of the poor which is represented in staves one to four as he watches as a third person to his life and others in his life. Want represents the poor, being how they want money and they want food. The use of children for this example creates a guilt feeling In scrooge and the reader, as children are the essence of innocence but the description of these children make them seem misshapened and messed up by humanity Stave 4 “Scrooge feared the silent shape” - Nar Scrooge in stave one spent a lot of energy trying to try and keep control of the situation with Marley but at the point of stave 4 he can no longer keep control, this psychologically makes people feel anxious as they feel like they can’t control things. This, and the fact that the ghost of Christmas yet to come being the impersonation of the grim reaper, are reasons wht he fears the ‘silent shape’. ‘Shape’ makes the ghost feel the most unnatural of the lot, the other spirits are represented as forms, either of a timeless person or a giant, but this is merely just a ‘shape’, a shadow. “I will live in the past, present” and future” - SCR Redemption Scrooge decides to learn his lesson from his life up to the point where the ghosts had intercepted him, lives in the present, the morning after, and the future, to stop Tiny Tim from dying as an example for the higher class audience to be able to better themselves and save the poor. “I will” is an imperative phrase that show scrooges change, “Will” is a definite word that shows scrooges willingness to change, its also a future participle which shows that though he has changed, he still has a lot to go. This shows to the business owners reading that it isn’t as easy as being haunted for a night, but it requires time but is all worth it as in stave 5 when scrooge is seen as jovial and loved. Scrooge already was living in the past, he acted like everything was awful and he shouldn’t experience joy, this is after his father abused and then abandoned him, Belle broke up with him - which was because his ‘idol’ changed to money. This makes impressions on scrooge psychologically, which shapes Scrooge to this day, which means that in this phrase he says he won’t let go of these experiences but he would also live for himself and everyone else in the changing climate Stave 5 “and so, as tiny tim observed, god bless us everyone” - Nar/TT Supernatural, Family Tiny Tim mentions In the last phrase of the novella that everyone is blessed by god, this inclusivity extends to scrooge who is in the scene. This is the same inclusivity we see in stave 3 when Bob calls scrooge ‘the founder of the feast’ which was a way to keep scrooge in their thoughts as he knew no one else would. However, now that Scrooge decided to change time, the line changed, making it so scrooge isn’t individualised but now appreciated by everyone. It is important that Tiny Tim says this line, as much as its important to mention Tiny Tims Future fate, it shows that Scrooge, like the employers and higher classes, have chances to change the future and make it better for everyone. Children in Dickens storys are always used as a diatribe to help end poverty. Whether that be Tiny Tim, Ignorance, Want, among others like Oliver Twist, which was created after a Christmas carol and further made points of poverty. Dickens wanted to show his experience without telling, he himself was a child of poverty and was forced to work in a blacking factory to make up for his father’s debts whilst he was in debtors prisons. He wanted the future generations, being represented by Tiny Tim, to suffer the hardships of his life.

@@pigeon_371 So what I wanted did not come up but, there were still good questions regardless. The Romeo and Juliet question was about how Shakespeare present Juliet going through difficulties in the extract and entire play. The extract was something that was not much of use but I still tried to link it back. I think it was act 2 scene 5. The Jekyll and Hyde question was good. It was on how Stevenson presents an atmosphere of fear and danger in the extract and entire novella. The extract was Chapter 2- Utterson's dream of Hyde. Overall, the exam went well and AQA really chose something out of the blue for Romeo and Juliet !!
