Literacy Symposium Thursday Keynote - Speech to Print: Reading’s Most Important Idea

The dependence of reading and writing on oral language abilities is well established. Language-focused instruction, however, involves more than building students’ listening and speaking skills. It requires explicit teaching of print as a system for representing speech, and explicit teaching of the language forms used in challenging texts. We’ll compare instructional approaches that do - and do not - respect reading’s most important idea.
