The influence of the Kinks literally permeates pop music and most people are simply unaware of this fact. They invented the power chords and riffs that you hear in all kinds of music for the last 50+ years. This was the follow up to their first hit You Really Got Me. The brothers Davies were 19 and 17 when this came out. Ray wrote YRGM when he was 15 and Dave was 16 when they recorded his manic solo which is said to be the first example of heavy metal, achieved by slicing and puncturing the speaker on the amp.

Absolutely! The true tribute to how great this band was is the number of bands that have covered them.

Bro, they were the AC/DC before AC/DC was.... raw, intensified, in your face power. Dave Davies (lead guitarist) was the first known to slit his speakers with a razor to get a dirt sound. The man was serious. Even the drummer's mix has the snare in overdrive.

The Kinks were trend setters. Remember, they started in 1964 and influenced The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In this particular song, you can almost begin to detect a Reggae flavor. As they went along they began to have a punk sound, long before punk gained an identity. A lot of their music was intellectually playful and emotionally deep.

Iggy Pop is known as the Godfather of Punk, but this is the beginning of punk. Jimmy Page, a studio musician back then, played guitar.
