Keith Emerson was mostly self taught. He had lessons from a neighborhood teacher -- no conservatory for Mr. Emerson. But he had a great nose for what and where to study. His unorthodox methods have produced results that speak for themselves. You'll find prog bands that sound like Yes, or Genesis, or Pink Floyd. You won't find another band that sounds like ELP. For my money, they are the most original -- and most overlooked -- band ever. And if I'm doing the picking, they're the greatest band ever. And you guys -- bless your hearts -- are doing more than your part to honor the ELP legacy. Prog on.

Which prog band sounds like Floyd?
The beginning section that sounds like harp or strings is piano. Emerson has an open grand piano, he stands up, reacts inside, and rakes his fingers across the piano strings. Vocals, bass, acoustic and electric guitars are all Greg Lake. One of the best prog song's of all time.

To get the chords you want, you first silently press the keys of that chord with one hand, then slide the fingernails of your other hand across the strings. You’ll get the zither sound from all the strings, but only the strings from the keys you are holding down keep ringing.

Here's a tidbit from WIKI. I was going to write a comment about how he hand=strums the piano keys, but this author says it best: "The song starts as a soft ballad. On the original recording it begins with Keith Emerson holding down voicing on the piano keys (without having the hammers strike the notes) while strumming the grand piano strings with a plectrum, as Greg Lake enters on electric bass guitar, and Carl Palmer on subtle percussion." Its a masterful piece of music.
Keith Emerson in my humble opinion is one of the best keyboardists ever In the history of any music genre... When he lost the use of his hands he lost his will to live God rest your soul Keith
When you listen to "Endless Enigma", go into the "Fugue" etc. as well, and then maybe thank me.

LOVE IT also. I see why Lake left King Crimson because of music such as this (which I thought insane, but he had his reasons). This work has such a jazzy feel. It is truly a masterpiece. In the '70s I had the priviledge of going to one of their concerts. Absolutely amazing. I can still see that huge gong behind Carl Palmer! I don't recall hearing this (until it got to the ending), but this song is a revelation to hear. Thanks for bringing it forward. Love that your folks dig this music and you are sharing it (and GENESIS) with them. It is never too late to discover great music.
ELP was never just a little anything. You will learn quick now. Brilliant. Don't stop! Keep going down the rabbit hole please!!! That voice....ohhhhh maaaannn. My favorite part of the song is when the theme consists entirely of piano and bass guitar with the light snare behind it. Lake's bass work on that section is just fantastic! This song seems so strongly influenced by King Crimson's first album (I've heard echoes of "Moonchild" and "Epitaph"). And, regarding Greg Lake's past, there's nothing strange in it. Personally, I prefer these works of ELP where they define their own unique style.

@@1969adasss I hear those echoes, too. And remember when they performed Tarkus live, they added part of Epitaph to the lyrics.
In this era, ELP and Yes actually shared one thing in common: all their early albums were produced by Eddie Offord. He really was the fourth member of ELP and sixth of Yes
And this is just the tip of the iceberg guys. ELP had a deep impact on me! I was 11 years old when I first listened to this guys and they blew my mind. Now I'm 62 and they still does. You need to listen to Tarkus, Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery. Those 3 albums are amazing! Thanks for sharing!!!
Greg Lake's voice.....🎆🎠⭐🌟💫✨ I had to come back and tell you two that when this album came out, I was 15 or 16 years old. My two best friends and I pooled our money and bought this album, two bottles of wine and a joint. 😅We went to another friend's house.. . who was a couple years older than us and who had his own apartment. We listened to this album at least twice. The feeling I had then, I just relived while listening to it again with you. And lex honey, you're right about the 70s !!!! It was a great time. 😍🤩🤗🧡💛🧡💛
Over 45 years ago a young girl walked up to me and said - Has anyone ever told you that you look like Keith Emerson ? I replied - Who's Keith Emerson ? I was a Led Zeppelin fan and although had heard of ELP I did not know their names or have their records. I got a - "What ! ! ! ? You've never heard of him" ? Lol - I was wearing a leather fur lined jacket and had shoulder length hair. She became my girlfriend and first love. This song reminds me of her. She had posters of him on her wall and it was the spitting image of me including the jacket. We got engaged, but in the end I got my heart broke, but never will forget her. I never married. Greg Lakes vocals are wonderful. So many memories - like ripples. Music has this extraordinary way of becoming a time machine. Love this track, still. Thankyou for such a great reaction to a very special song.
A true story. Saw them in concert in ‘73, didn’t know much about them but SHE really wanted to go. Let’s assume all the real fans had prepped for the show and were properly wasted. At least that was true for the guy sitting in front of us. After every song he’d yell, “TAKE A PEBBLE!” He finally passed out. and they played the song.
Been waiting for this one for a long time. I can't listen to this without showing emotion.

So lovely to hear this again after many years. Damn they were good. We were blessed in the early 70s with Floyd, the Moodies, Focus, Yes, ELP and others. It's sad that the punk rock movement was partly a reaction to the cleverness of these posh boys. Why sing when you can sell records with spit and snarl? Fantaaaaaaaaaastic track from three Amazing musicians, greetings from Treviso Italy
Finally you gave Emerson, Lake & Palmer the credit they deserve.
From time to time songs that are a perfect union between creation, instrumentation and presentation grace the music listening public. In my opinion this is one such song.
These guys need to be inducted into the rock & roll Hall of Fame--it's a crime that they haven't been. Not only were they one of the biggest acts in the 70s who sold--I think-- 50 million albums, but they were true pioneers in, not only prog rock, but rock music in general. Keith Emerson, particularly, inspired countless keyboard players--transforming what had always been a solitary piece of on-stage furniture into multiple sexy instruments. He was also the first to use a Moog live, despite Bob Moog's doubts about the "roadabilty" of the instrument. Along with Greg Lake and Carl Palmer, ELP played a significant role in the development of modern music. I had the good fortune to see them when they were all at the top of their game in 1974. I hadn't seen anything like it before or since. Just scary talented. Hopefully whoever makes these decisions will come to their senses soon.
Another album by ELP that gets overlooked is Pictures at an Exhibition. It is a must.
Keith used to be the consummate showman. At one point taking a whole grand piano flying it up and revolving the whole thing! Sticking knives in a keyboard to hold chords. Playing the keyboard upside down …. But a great player equally at home playing classical or jazz - liberally scattering bits of Bach and other classical composers. A great reader of scores too once treating a music student who had been practicing a complex piece for months to an impromptu masterclass - the student had no idea who this guy was who had strolled in, taken a look, and played it. That night he meets his pals who are going to see ELP - Tells them what happened. They tell him he has just had a masterclass from Keith Emerson. Sure enough he goes to the concert and is blown away by these amazing musicians. Truly they were an early example of a supergroup. Keith had THE NICE and had at one point asked Hendrix to join - who declined! THE NUCE we’re great not so hot vocally but Keith wrote a classical/rock piece as a hymn to his native Newcastle - the 5 BRIDGES SUITE - which is worth a listen.Greg Lake was in the original lineup of KING CRIMSON - still the best configuration of KC in my view. Carl Palmer from the wonderful ATOMIC ROOSTER. They were musicians of the highest order. When Keith committed suicide Rick Wakeman did a wonderful tribute to him along with Rachel Flowers - Keith’s blind young protege who is amazing in her own right. Keith was mischievous often messing with time signatures to keep his band mates on their toes. Check out their rendering of PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION recorded live!
This album came out in the fall of 1970 when I was in 11th grade. One of the then brand new progressive rock stations played "The Barbarian" and I was blown away. Soon the pop and rock stations were playing "Lucky Man" and I ran out to buy the album. Regardless, "Take a Pebble" right away became my favorite track. Fifty One years later I'm still playing this song and feeling that sense of wonder every time. It is indeed a masterpiece.
Amazing piano from one of the best. Try Tarkus next, that whole suite is Prog at its best. Nice reaction, can't wait to see your faces when you give UFO another chance, they will amaze you once again. Rock Bottom is epic off Strangers in the Night Live. Rock On! 😎

We had this album when it came out. I was about 14 and played the piano. We didn't have a grand piano, just a spinet, but I would lift up the music shelf to reveal the strings underneath, step on the sustain pedal and strum and pick out the notes from the beginning of this tune. I would sound just like the record!
“C’est La Vie” has to be the next one, absolutely beautiful piece by ELP…..

Everyone will sing the praise of Greg Lake and Keith Emerson. And duly so! But before the evolution of Neil Peart I was enthralled with Carl Palmer and Bill Brufford. Just as spectacular as Brufford has been for Yes and King Crimson no one could be more perfect to play with Emerson and Lake than Carl Palmer. I love the honesty in Nick's face (you can't fake that kind of emotion. ) And Lex has what Jamal aka Jamel calls stink face. LOVED IT
From their first album, do try The Barbarian, you will see why. Cheers! oh, and you might want to branch out to trying the albums Trilogy or Brain Salad Surgery. The song Trilogy would be right up your alley.

I was quite amused at your reaction to this song, it has been my favorite since the first time I heard it as a teenager in the early 70's and ELP has been my favorite band ever since. I've seen them live maybe 10 times and they were just as amazing live. I once saw them in Providence RI one night and followed their trailers to Cape Cod MA to see them the next night. Keith is a virtuoso on piano, Carl Palmer is simply phenomenal, he was Neil Peart before Neil, but that's my opinion. If you ever get a chance, look for Carl Palmers snare drum demonstration on KZread, he's amazing. Greg Lake has one of the best voices and very underrated bass & guitar player. They were the first band that I ever heard with a quadraphonic concert, stacks in four corners of the area, the end of Brain Salad Surgery I thought the building was blowing up.
Take a Pebble is my favourite ELP piece.. hauntingly beautiful with a great vocal from Greg and wonderful contributions from all three.Oh how I loved the 70s progrock

I got to see these guys live back in the late 70s. It was awesome.
If this song was on 'In the Court of the Crimson King' it would've fit perfectly, but mostly because of Greg Lake's voice of silk.
Such joy. In the song, in your reaction to the song. Thanks.
I heard their new album Tarkus in the 70s when I was a freshman music major in college and was blown away by the creativity of these guys.
In 1971, I saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. They were opening for Procol Harem. Dave had managed to get a seat in the 2nd row. Suzi and I were back in the 7th. The roadies made some final checks, flicked a switch and the place went black. Among the rustling of the confused audience, I started to feel a slight subsonic rumbling that was growing louder with increasing speed, until a sudden crescendo and flooding of light revealed the band on stage diving into their new album (armadillo tank on the cover). Dave came running, demanding that we squeeze him some space. He needed people to grab, and strangers wouldn't do! From then on, ELP just took over, completely. It was actually lucky that Harum's Leslie broke down. Their classic fare wouldn't have cut the mustard. So, after a short conference, stage right, they came back out and lit into Salty Dog, their new, unreleased album. The unfettered rock and roll saved their day.
Makes me so happy to see another generation enjoy ELP. I play keyboards and Keith Emerson has been my idol for most of my life. The year he died I attended his tribute concert at the El Ral theatre in Los Angelos. An unbelievable concert. I highly recommend you get the DVD. There is an outstanding performance of “Take a Pebble”, “From the Beginning”, and other ELP material. Superstar lineup at that concert.

Since you guys appreciate Classical music you might want to give the ELP arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition a try. It is really quite remarkable!

I'd love to see their reaction to Pirates!
Keith Emerson (piano, organ, synthesizer, keyboards), Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass), Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). Three super talented innovative musicians. One of my favorite groups. So glad you're liking them.
Hooray! Glad you heard this finally! Love from Tassie
When I saw you were finally reacting to "Take a Pebble", BooM - I was instantly transported to my youth. What a beautiful feeling. Wonderful memories came rushing back. THX so much for reacting to this. I love your reactions to ELP. Cheers from Bradley a.k.a. monstersound 🟥🍁🟥
I know I've said it before, but us kids that grew up in the 60's and 70's were absolutely musically spoiled!
Greg Lakes favorite acoustic guitar Gibson SJ-200...really nice tone.
You finally got to skip that pebble across the pond.... Thanks for giving me a treat today, first it was Metheny and now this? An absolutely great piece of music!
Hey Nick N Lex. This is a favorite of mine. Great song. Great musicianship. These guys could really bring it. Glad you both liked it. Keep up the good work. Steve P.S. Southside of the Sky by Yes
Yay!!!!!
Simply the best.
Keith Emerson: Piano, Keyboards; Synthesizer Greg Lake: Acoustic and Electric Guitars and Vocals Carl Palmer: Drums
One of the most amazingly beautiful tunes ever. And it gets better every time I’ve listened to it for 50 years.
You guys are so on point in your prog journey....Thanks so much! 👍💖
Your reaction to this is so beautiful. The emotion, the joy, your reaction together, and alone. You're right, this is a masterpiece. Read what Irvin Yalom has to say about 'ripples', the 'ripple effect'. Its the existential feel this song has...sublime.
Hi guys..... yet another wonderful reaction. I first saw ELP 50 years ago, and watching and listening to your review...... I had tears in my eyes. We have Keith Emerson, formally of The Nice, Greg Lake, formally of King Crimson and Carl Palmer, formally of Atomic Rooster. I am STILL a huge fan of them. Sadly, only Carl Palmer is still alive. RIP Keith and Greg..... Missing you so very much.
you hang on to and enjoy each note! It is a pleasure listening to this great music "with you".
