The second best DT album for me. Fresh and progressive music. No pointless shredding, but every instrument played for the whole of the song. It's peculiar to start listening this album from the b-side as I've, obviously, always started it from the beginning. Dream Theater sound excellent on this one!

An overture is a piece of music for the orchestra to play at the beginning of an opera or ballet. The word comes from the French word for "opening" because it "opens" the show. Overtures usually have tunes which are going to be heard during the opera or ballet. In this way it prepares the audience for what is to come.

This is, IMO, their magnum opus. The piece by which they should be judged for the rest of time. Your comments about this being more compositional in nature are spot on, and the whole band gets many chances to shine while maintaining a strong balance throughout. Also, the subject matter and lyrics are insightful and brilliant, touching on some very sensitive and important issues relating to mental health. The way the music fits each topic as it comes up is amazing.

I've listened to this gorgeous album a million times and I never noticed the overture ends the exact same way the entire piece does.

So where do I begin with this one Jim? . . . Part I I know! From the very beginning :D. Well, at this time in January of 2002, I had been working at Tower Records in Santa Monica Calif. near the famous pier. I knew it was coming out, I believe from reading music trade magazines (I did not own a computer as of yet, nor did the store have a modern computer to look-up such stuff, with images. Though the supervisor had a desktop in his office, he was a bit of an _______ ). So I got word from the reps around Christmas of 2001, it was coming in January with hopes of promotional material. Sure enough I got quite a few double-sided posters (2 I kept for myself) and made this "quicky" display for it: fav.me/ddk362a And with that I received the "Metropolis Live Scenes from a Memory" DVD and Six Degrees CD from the label rep. This became my 2nd fave album in the DT catalogue. I had been a fan since the debut of "When Dream and Day Unite" (on LP from the "Mechanic" label, which I still have), so each album to come was always exciting. The "Overture" was just that, it was a preview of everything to come. If the album "Metropolis: Scenes from a Memory Book II" (the previous album) was the Musical, then Six Degrees was the Stage Play, with its Broadway Musical embellishments. I was always amazed at how they capture certain moments that make you think of a mood or setting, like the part Jim, you picked up on at 4:45, and then Mike Portnoy plays the drum much like a drummer in a stage play at 7:00 (tap tap tap). That must come from his love of Film & Film and Musical Scores. And then eases us into the set-up, and the various tragic lives to come. As it says on the albums wiki page; "(it) explores the stories of six individuals suffering from various mental illnesses. Particularly represented are (1) bipolar and (2) post-traumatic stress disorder, (3) schizophrenia, (4) post-partum depression, (6) autism and (7) dissociative personality disorder. Furthermore, the title of the album may also allude to the fact that each song on the album could be seen as a different form of inner turbulence, with the six tracks making another reference to the six degrees, along with the apparent reference to the six degrees of separation." This was some HEAVY stuff, and I knew musically it was going to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but I didn't think parts of it would hit me in the gut. Our first character we're along for the ride in her ups and downs, caught up in her frantic life, and those that to catch her when she falls. With that feeling that we may be back to see where we left off in her particular story. War Veterans in particular are a soft-spot (our "Veterans Day" comes this Monday), and the character suffering through PTSD painted a movie in my head. The band was able to create very sympathetic characters through the moods of the music and lyrical content within minutes. And that's just the 2 characters so far . . . . To be continued.

Hi Jim! Here's the thing... I don't like Dream Theater. Never really liked them. I've been listening to their music for years hoping that maybe one day something will magically click and I'm gonna start enjoying the fruits of these guys incredible musical skills. Well, that didn't happen. I've stopped trying more than 15 years ago. However today, something has changed. I simply wanted to quickly check out your channel and relax after listening to extreme metal bands for the last few months without a break. Saw Dream Theater video smiling at me and decided to give it a try. Guess what? I loved it... for almost 10 minutes. Until I've heard the voice of one James LaBrie. Holy Hell! His tone literally makes me mad, causes twitching in my left eye and activates Tourettes syndrome that I never had. Anyway, it's good to be back here and thanks for this video. Now I know exactly why I can't stand listening to this brilliant and very talented musicians. :) Have a great Sunday Jim!

James LaBrie polarizes ... and even me as fan of the first hour I don't like the newer stuff because of his singing ... and see him live is even worth, he just doesn't hit the high notes anymore ... I love the older stuff and my personal theory is, he was better as long as Mike told him how to sing ... as seen in the making of DVD of Systematic Chaos ... another theory is, that his singing sounds more european and american singers simply sound different ... more volume... harder ... but as you learned, the music is great ... at least it was as long as Mike Portnoy was the boss - my opinion 🤘
