My favorite programme for improving listening comprehension and exponding vocabulary is 6 minute English with BBC. Episodes are short, speakers are always extremely clear and funny. There are always couple new words for me with great explanition at the end of each episode.

Thanks for the reminder, "The world is giving you answers, Learn to listen". The laws of attraction is real indeed. Also one of my favorite movies is The Descendants, ft George Clooney. Its speaks on a realtor dealing with a conflicting relationship between him and his wife.Few months after, She's placed in a coma due to a boating accident & has to prep himself to tell his kids, friends, & family. He also learns, while Traveling for business, His wife has an afair with a mystery man. What I love most about this movie is how he handles things as a man without getting out of character, While simultaneously remaining humble in figuring out his self resolve with each individualized issue.

I used to watch the Vampire Diaries with German subtitles, my English wasn't as good as it is now, but I believe that it helped me create a basic understanding of the language. Truth be told, those subtitles were sometimes wrong, but in some cases still useful to help me understand some unusual words or sentences, especially English slang which isn't taught in school.

I learned english from TV while i was young. I used to watch/hear it in cartoons, then i systematically switched to movies which were transmitted in the original language with subtitles in my native language. Later i studied french in school against my choice (long live democracy) which i was good at, well versed, but i never liked it as much as english, therefore it didn't stick. As of this day i can barely put together a few phrases in french, while in english i'm able to hold longer, more complex conversations, listen to music, watch movies without subtitles yet still being able to understand the content of it. That stands ro prove that the methods James is describing are worth trying. I'm very happy and grateful to have discovered this channel for it is very helpful for anyone to learn and respectively improve their knowledge.

That last technique remember me how I started learning english by myself ten years ago. I did not understand most of the contents but I watched stuff that I like without worrying about how well the people spoke. I remember watching a show (Equals 3 with RWJ) that in one video, the guy was laughing at a comment he received saying "I am learning THE english with your video" because the show was full of trash joke and he would end up saying obscenity everywhere. However, it was interesting, so watching his video wasn't a chore even if I had difficulty understanding. Meanwhile, I had an aunt which desesperatly wanted to learn english, but she was struggling a lot. She had many strategy, but one of them was listening the news. She said it was because they speak perfectly with less pronounced accent. My answer was "If news float your boat, fine. However, if you don't enjoy it, it will not last". Now she has a house for the winter in Florida (yeah she's not broke) while I'm still living in a French environment but I am willing to bet I have a better understanding of English than her due to the massive amount of content I have watched over the years. P.S: subtitles and good audio are a game changer. When I began, it was impossible for me to understand English with the TV speaker, but when used my headphone everything was way easier.

According to the 3rd criteria: Listen and Read at the same time; Watching Anime in Japanese with English subtitles has prepped me so much. I guess my parents were wrong about it being useless. Thank you for the lesson. . . . LOL. It has even gotten to the point that I can understand Japanese without seeing the subtitles. Its really weird. I just stay in my room and hear it on the outside if my family is watching a movie or in public and it feels weird that I subtly understand it. I even know the difference between Chinese, Japanese and Korean. You can actually recognize the difference by the words or sounds they use in speaking thus I can distinguish if the person is Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Its cus I watch anime and Korean series with subs. So, All in all, TV isn't useless. Media isn't useless it is just another medium to learn something as well as being entertainment. Funny isn't it?
