LISTEN: Ex-wife details bizarre relationship between Alex Cox and Lori Vallow Daybell

CHANDLER, Arizona -- A phone call released Thursday afternoon from the Chandler Police Department reveals a conversation between a detective and Alex Cox's ex-wife where she shares a bizarre relationship Cox allegedly had with his sister Lori Vallow Daybell.
Marriage records previously obtained by EastIdahoNews.com show Cox married a woman named Debbie in 1992. The couple divorced the following year, but when the Daybell case broke, she contacted a Chandler, Arizona detective who recorded the interview in September 2020. Debbie's last name was redacted in police reports and EastIdahoNews.com is not reporting it.
"There were so many crazy dynamics in that family," Debbie told investigators. "... It caused a lot of issues right away and it actually made me scared and nervous."
The ex-wife described a lot of inappropriate sexual touching between Cox and Daybell. According to the call and a Chandler Police report, Debbie said the brother and sister would simulate sex acts in front of her and the rest of the family.
"He also talked about (how she was) hot and he sexualized her quite a bit. He did touch her breast and things," Debbie said. "Alex and I only lived together married about four or five months. Then I just knew that family was too weird and that I made a big mistake so I got out."
Cox reportedly saw nothing wrong with the behavior and arguments ensued between him and his now ex-wife. Cox told Debbie he had a problem controlling his sex drive.
"While he and I were married he got excommunicated from the Mormon church," Debbie said. "... He was always really convicted in the faith, but where Alex is weak is he was just sexually promiscuous (and) he kept getting kicked out of the church because I think he was a sex addict."
Debbie reported she learned Cox slept with a 15-year-old girl and the teen's father began looking for him to take care of the problem on his own. She said there was "too much promiscuity surrounding sex in our marriage early on" and that played into their divorce.
The marriage between Debbie and Cox lasted only a year but the two maintained in touch for years, according to Debbie. She says the last time she spoke to Cox was shortly after he got out of jail for attacking Daybell's third husband, Joseph Ryan, in Texas.
In the years following the last conversation Debbie had with Cox, he shot and killed Daybell's fourth husband, Charles Vallow, in July 2019. Cox died in December 2019 in the months after his sister's two children 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan vanished.
Investigators found Tylee and JJ's bodies buried in the backyard of Daybell's fifth husband, Chad Daybell, in June 2020.
Listen to the entire conversation with Debbie and the detective in the video player above.

Let’s not get silly and dramatic about this conversation! She wasn’t in any danger, not way back then, and probably would never have been! Cox hadn’t even beat anybody up at that point, according to her, and there’s no evidence that he killed anybody who was outside Lori’s immediate circle, and he never threatened her female friends. The drama of the actual murders is enough for a lifetime without injecting it with the fictitious thrill of additional danger and murder.

  • @WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey

@@voraciousreader3341 are you for real? He hadn't murdered anyone yet so the 5+ people he murdered in the future... don't count? The point is that Alex was an unstable man who murdered, dismembered and burned a 16 year old girl who was his NIECE, his blood relative and if he's able to do that he's capable of anything. Your comment is insensitive, and ridiculous honestly. I don't like anything overdramatised but you are doing the opposite and minimising and downplaying the hideous crimes he did. He never threatened her female friends... did he threaten tylee, jj, Tammy or Charles prior to murdering them? Possibly Charles but unlikely the others were threatened, so what does that mean? Someone's not dangerous unless they threaten someone? Your insinuation that he never liked anyone outside Lori's circle and therefore he isn't dangerous to anyone else is crazy to me. I'm wondering whether your comment is purposefully trolling but if it's not, I think you need to reevaluate exactly what a MURDER is and what type of person Alex is and whether you'd let him babysit your children... because they aren't in Lori's circle so they'd be safe, right? 😳😬🙄

And if Cristina Atwood & Nicole Earl had gone to the police back in the spring of 2019 before Lori & Alex killed Charles that July & told the police Lori had been crushing up benzodiazepines and putting them in his protein powder and that Alex said he wanted to kill him, maybe this would have turned out differently when Charles went to the police begging for help. Finally! Someone else has taken note of that comment Tylee made @the bat!! Thank you! She said she had a bat when she stayed alone at her uncle’s house in January so she could feel safer. The detective blew right on past that. That comment alone was what I kept assuming someone would dig into and find that the whole family had (has) dark, dark secrets, including sexual abuse - which would make complete sense - Lori has past trauma, no doubt, it’s obvious in all her behaviors. Alex may have been the perpetrator and/or victimized himself. And there’s a reason no one discusses Lori’s father.

A more disturbing group of people would be hard to find. The family dynamics that Alex's former wife describes is extremely disturbing. To further substantiate many people's beliefs, the parents seem to be just as far removed from reality as Lori and Alex are/were. Now we have a pretty good idea as to how Lori got Alex to murder her husband and children & maybe Tammy Daybell too. Lori was probably allowing Alex to do more than just grope her if and when he did as she bid of him.

I got chills when she mentioned Alex being involved with a 15 year old girl. Poor Tylee was 16 when he murdered her. Being that her body was so destroyed, the evidence of any sort of S.A. was likely destroyed too. I wouldn't be shocked if that happened before they dismembered and burned her. To do that to a body, usually means some horrific things were being covered up and DNA needed to be destroyed. Jmo

If this disgusting and inappropriate touching was acceptable in their home, was this happening to Tylee and JJ? I know Lori said Joe was SA Colby and Tylee… could it have been her or Alex actually doing it, not Joe? Hearing Alex planned to start a fight with Joe and kill him in “ self defense “, that makes me sick- Lori and Alex had that idea long before they used it on Charles. What a disgraceful, sickening family!!!! I can only imagine what Colby, Tylee and JJ went through.

She used it to rebel against her mother and possibly her grandmother and other family members. She didn't want to endure their "high standards" which likely caused Stacy's eating disorders and death. I was quite a bit younger than her and no one listened or cared so I stopped trying to tell anyone. It was confusing, uncomfortable, and downright scary to witness. I found out she died at age 50/52 from breast cancer but her own daughter is super messed up. That’s because he did it to her as well. I tried to report when I saw she had a child (once I grew up) but no one did anything again! I will say her dad hated every boyfriend she had as well. Possessiveness disguised as “protection” is common in these scenarios. It’s tragic those in authority are so uninterested when they profess to care about kids.

@@solrsys - I think it is because their dad was sexually molesting them. The parents were sexual deviants who at the very least spoke openly and repeatedly about their own sex life to their children, so it would be natural for Lori and Alex to feel comfortable displaying such behavior in front of their weirdo parents. It all makes sense now. The power Lori had over Alex was sexual.

that woman’s story sounds totally credible - now it all makes much more sense - unfortunately none of this can be proven in court, but it helps to see the full picture of what actually REALLY happened…

I don’t trust Zulema at all, her behaviour was extremely suspicious the day Alex died, I think she was just trying to cover her ass because she was worried about getting caught

Wow i feel like this explains alot about them, their dynamic and how Alex was as a person, I feel like this was a huge missing puzzle piece. Pretty sick and shocking. They've done a great job covering this story and I can't wait to hear all the details as they emerge to the public. What an absolutely insane case, the family is obviously super twisted.
