    One of the saddest losses in 2021 was the demise of the legendary Sparta Pride. The Sparta Pride is of such historical significance because it was the natal pride of Pretty Boy, Rasta, Dreadlocks, Kinky Tail, and Mister T Mapogo. In 2000 the five rulers of the Sparta Pride, the West Street Kings, made the wise decision to adopt a nearly two-year-old Marthly(Tsalala) lion named Makhulu.

    The thing is, the Sparta lionesses and the Mapogos were really not so special or individually exceptional. This is being objective, it is not just "opinion." In KNP there are routinely 5-6 lion coalitions prowling around, and some of these lions may be/have been bigger individually and more impressive than most/any of the Mapogos. The Maps could do what they did because they were the only coalition with their numbers in the Sabi Sands area--the next largest was 1 four-lion group, the rest were all less, even a couple of single dominant pride males. The Mapogos caught 1 from that four-lion group and the others smartly took the opportunity to leave, probably for KNP. Yep, the West Street Males--who looked a bit ram shackle even in their primes compared to more than a few in KNP--they tolerated a son from another pride. There is that probable relationship with the predecessors of the Tsalala pride, some of whom were renamed Ximumghe in Sabi Sands, it seems; the West Street males surely mated with more than just the Sparta lionesses, and the Charleston pride might have been one, and both Makhulu and the Roller Coaster males could've come from that pride. If Mak came from the Ximumghe predecessors of the Tsalalas, well, it could've been a sister of BB Tsalalas mother--Mak and BB were both born in 1998, probably. But this all remains uncertain.

    @@private4918 Your opening sentence is an opinion; your closing sentence is a fact. Most lion enthusiasts and lion experts agree that Makhulu was an exceptionally intelligent lion. He understood that there is strength in numbers. He could have considered the shorter term by recruiting the three older Mapogos as a coalition of four and then leaving the Sparta pride a year earlier than he did leave. However, he made the prudent decision to look to the long term and waited until the two youngest Mapogos were old enough to join his coalition of six.The Mapogo coalition of six left the Sparta pride sometime in 2004. Makhulu would turn six years old in Oct. of that year. The Mapogo coalition is considered out-of-the-ordinary because it acquired the largest lion kingdom in the recorded history of Sabi Sands. Ximungwhe is a newer name for the Castleton pride. In the first half of 1998, two lionesses broke away from the Castleton pride and formed the Marthly pride. Tsalala is a newer name for the Marthly pride. I believe that one of the two Marthly/Tsalala lionesses is Makhulu's mother.

    @@barbaraquay4482 What I said is not strictly opinion. Did you actually read what I said about other lions in KNP, which applies to all those in Africa? "Experts" are not always right, and probably few of those you have in mind have graduate college degrees, and that's not a guarantee they would always be "right" about everything. If Makhulu was so smart, how could the Ottawa male have been so dumb as to charge at both Birmingham males? Many lions understand strength in number every bit as well as Mak, and strength in terms of having numerical advantage over opponents in fights and takeovers. But, Kinky Tale and Mr. T had no understanding of things that "smart" lions understand, otherwise they would probably have lived a few years longer. That is NOT just a matter of opinion. They were NOT smart to try to fight 1 against 4, while the Ottawa male was dumb to try to challege 2 dominant males, which he most likely really was NOT doing that night? The Mapogos were not exceptional in any way except that there were no 6-lion coalitions in the Sabi Sabi Sands. That is not opinion. Do you remember what happened when the Mapogos lost the numerical advantage? ?? How exceptional were they? Not more than any other lions! Kinky Tale and Mr. T got themselves stupidly killed--almost suicidally--by the Majingilanes and Selatis. Were Makhulu and Pretty Boy able to then fight, defeat the 4 Selatis and keep that territory and 2 prides, as if they were some sort of exceptional super lions? No, that definitely didn't happen. Now about Dreadlocks, the other Mapogo not yet mentioned. If he was such an exceptional, huge, strong, elephant of a male lion, why was he so stupid and lazy to keep going into a farm stockyard and killing cows? If that was out of reserve boundaries, the people may--I said if and I said may--have not really been guilty of "poaching" if they snared and killed him. See the point? Back to Makhulu. He was probably the maternal grandfather of the Ottawa--OM had lots of darker hair in his mane past 6 years of age that John Varty seems to have been ignoring. OM's Maj father was most likely Scar Nose. The Majingilanes were probably much smarter than the Mapogos, and thus far, they may have had the longest "reign" or "rule" in the Sabi Sands in recent times. Do you know how they hunted buffalo? Maybe more like wolves/dogs, and smart cats can do it too. The Majingilanes genuinely smart as to reduce the Selati males down from 5 to 4 early on because they really understood strength and numerical advantage--the Mapogos could just go around and slaughter without a second thought--even from Makhulu--because they didn't have to because of their own number. Back to the Majs and Selatis. The Majs didn't just stupidly blunder into the far west and "takeover" the Ottawa and Ximumghe prides in an even numerical match. No, they listened and snuck around until they could hear the roars of 3 Selatis instead of 4, then they made their move. One of the 4 Selatis died too soon of hunting injuries or whatever, and injury seems to have been the cause of 1 the 2 who made it into Manyeleti. Back to Makhulu. Of course I know about the Castleton pride. From what has been written, those two Tsalala lionesses that split away from the Castleton pride lost a bunch of cubs, and wound up with 1 female and 1 male, the female being the original tailless Tslalala, or BB. If Makhulu was indeed the son of one of those two Castleton breakaway lionesses, he must've disappeared awhile, because all the cubs were lost, except the 1 female and 1 male, and it has been written that the male was poached; so, Makhulu would've probably been a cousin and son of another Castleton lioness who became a Ximumghe. I haven't seen any records of the lions in the Castleton pride--other than the info about the 2 breakaway lionesses--at the time, or their cubs, 1 of which may have been Makhulu.

    @@barbaraquay4482 Yes, there were 6 Mapogos. That's part of the broad points I made about them as a coalition. Did you read it? People tend to ignore things. No, I really wasn't intending to write a huge critique about each Mapogo. I really didn't criticize Makhulu, whom I really like; some of the others may have had some positive trait or another, but I was making valid points. Rasta and Pretty Boy didn't distinguish themselves in the ways that the others did, like I mentioned earlier. Rasta and Pretty Boy sometimes patrolled together and they probably split from the other during the chase in later July of 2010; the Maps drove the 4 Majs into KNP, probably--and remember that the Maps had the important numerical advantage here. It might've been Mala Mala that mentioned a bedraggled Pretty Boy making his way back to the others when the chase stopped. He had a number of puncture wounds that looked like spear holes--too many for him to have survived a buffalo attack. I do believe Rasta was poached in KNP. I don't agree with Mapogo maniac fanatics that a total of 4 Maps were killed directly or indirectly by humans. Also, are you aware that the Maps did eat other lions? The pride male for the Tsalalas in 2006 to 2007 was killed and eaten by the Maps. As far as I'm concerned, KT and Mr. T may have had something coming and definitely could've escaped.

    @@mbr936 It was reported that OM may have been a bit "on fire" all right on May 6--but it most likely was not at the Birminghams, or directed at any Kambula/Ntsevu lionesses. Nobody thinks OM couldn't have been a mad father trying to get revenge against cub-killing "nomads" who were returning from Sabi Sabi? Yes, the images are out there that point to something like the fight between the Red Road male and the Tintswalo males; and healing marks in the faces of the cub killers in images afterward, beginning when they started being seen by rangers and tourists again at the end of May.

  • @private4918

    @private4918

    @@mbr936 Just to clarify: I'm not saying Lodolozi says what I believe, based on a combination of evidence, some from Londolozi and elsewhere. OM was described by people who did see him that last time as being agitated, but not at the people in the vehicles. If you look in Lodolozi's web pages/blog you will see what Tyrell says, and he talked to the ranger head who didn't recognize the roars in the east as being from Nhena and Tinyo. Lion's can here/pick up sounds much better than humans, and this is something that none of the game reserve people, including John Varty, seem to want to talk about, if they are aware of it. Lions can hear about 4 times the distance a human can. This is hard science, NOT my opinion, and it's CRITICAL here to understanding just who OM was going toward. OM most likely knew better than the humans out there who he was trotting toward; and it probably was neither the Birminghams nor the Kambulas, though he probably did encounter 1 or another of them later on. The Nwalungu males had been down in Sabi Sabi--the images are on the Web. Did they remain there, close to the Ndzengas? When they showed up in images after OM's death, marks that were not just simple scratches were in their faces, and those weren't there before; the marks were most likely not from the Plains Camp males because 2 vs. 2, the Nwalungus would've given the same to the PCs, and the PCs had nothing like it in their faces at the time. The Nwalungus wanted Singita and the Manghenis, especially the Nkuhuma male who had been tramping back and fortth for 2.5 years before OM died. Whenever lions "invade" or try to "takeover," cubs usually wind up being lost; the Kambulas seem to be down to 4, right, as a result of the movements of the Ndzengas during the past couple of months. OM and the Manghenis lost 11 of 13 cubs born before his death. OM had chased, as reported by Lodolozi, the Nwalungus in April; Nhena had chased his son and nephew in March. OM sensed/heard the Nwalungus coming back from Sabi Sabi and thought he would stop them before they even reached their destination: Singita, of course. OM was youthful with lots of energy, and he went running into Mala Mala that night, probably in response to the roars of the Nwalungus after they made a left turn--remember that the roars were coming closer, westward, before they stopped. OM had a fight with them, they scooted westward while OM turned a bit more northwest; he encountered Nhena before he got into that carcass clearing. You know that Nhena limped for 6 weeks afterward. I saw something I think on Twitter from Mala where it was reported that Nhena and Tinyo had come into Main Camp that night and OM came into Mala Mala 3 km to the south. so who was roaring in the east? It wouldn't have been the Birminghams at all. But no exact time was given for when the B males were around Main Camp, and it is possible they could've done some maneuvering that night, from east northward to Main Camp, but....

    @@mbr936 About the B males. I disagree about them being "far past their prime," but Tinyo was going in and out of good condition for some time. Yes, it's hard to understand OM's not escaping. But based upon what probably happened, OM was probably already injured by the Nwalungus when he probably encountered Nhena on his way back home. I don't think OM was really "killed" or fatally injured by lions; I think he wound up in that clearing alone and was finished by hyenas; the "dark" or "black"--which was it, John Varty?--hair on the ground, that is really not visible in the carcass pictures, probably or could have come from OM's mane, which was torn off by the scavengers, spewing some hairs on the ground.

    This reminds me of the Roman Empire. They conquered territory after territory. They grow too fas too quick which led to their fall. The lions have to split in order to patrol the vast territory and that is when they find themselves facing other lions, younger lions. And the fall of their empire begins to fall. I have seen many documentaries of different prides. They all endup the same way. Sad, but it is the law of the jungle.

There are,facilities that foster cubs and later release them into the wilds. All those people/entities being thanked above. Yes, but then what they say and don't say should be paid careful attention too. What I've seen lately is that Inyati says that Singita said that Styx was killed by hyenas. Slashing the underside is exactly how hyenas and the dog family do things; the Nkuhuma male would most likely not have done that, and he was most likely being beaten up by the Manghenis at the time. In the images the world can see the Styx male carrying a piece of buffalo carcass accompanied by about 2 hyenas--Singita reported 5 of those. About the Ottawa male. No, Londolozi doesn't know for sure who the roars toward the east were coming from, and it was probably not the Birmingham males. Just recently I saw something maybe on Twitter that seems to have come from Mala Mala: a report of Nhena and Tinyo entering the Main Camp area on the night of May 6, and the Ottawa male invading from Londolozi 3 kilometers to the south. The Ottawa male had been losing cubs to nomadic males, and Londolozi even mentioned a bit about this. Just who were those nomads? Four of those were the Ndzengas, who made a northwest excursion earlier in 2021, but they have been held responsible for the loss of only 2 Mangheni cubs. The other cub killer s no doubt were Nkuhuma and Styx. Cubs may not be directly killed by invading male lions, but when lionesses run, cubs can easily get left behind and get lost, then to be eliminated by hyenas and whatever else. People just cannot understand what the Nkuhuma male was up to, like a perfectly nomadic male, for 2.5 years, and what he's been up to since the demise of OM; more lately however, the Plains Camps shoved him back into Londolozi, and the northern half of Singita can almost be considered their territory, and they've attracted 2 lionesses from the Nkuhuma pride, maybe on a permanent basis. Also, despite what a certain Londolozi ranger thinks, I doubt that lionesses try to castrate male lions--maul and cripple them permanently, yes, but it is typical of male lions to do the castrating, not lionesses. The Nkuhuma male was left with more than a few fang puncture holes all over the groin area underneath and injury down the hind legs, I think too. The PC males stopped short, but these big rangers should realize that lions don't always fight to the death and they don't always fatally wound their opponents, even when they have the numerical advantage.

  • @private4918

    @private4918

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Night Watchmen The Manghenis are like headless, wandering chickens. The problem was that they and the Ottawa male had too big of a territory! Yes, cubs wound up on the wayside, no doubt, and then caught by hyenas, leopards, and so on. A smaller territory is actually easier to defend: it's a matter of running intruders out instead of running here, there, and everywhere spewing cubs along the way. OM's 18-month-old daughter was probably killed by those 20 hyenas in Londolozi in January because the dumb mother/aunts insisted on harassing a mother hyena at a den.

  • @private4918

    @private4918

    @Night Watchmen You mentioned the late Styx male. What lion are you actually talking about? Inyati GR said--and it's online for the world to see--that Singita GR told them that hyenas killed the Styx male. There were 5 of them and Styx just didn't want to let them have that buffalo head! the Manghenis were no doubt beating up--or trying--the Nkuhuma male while Styx faced the hyenas. There is an image of Nkuhuma in Lodolozi web pages, I believe, where his back is turned to the camera and a bluish circle that looks like a scab can be seen above his tail. That image is from maybe October of 2021. Singita said that one of the 2 male lions was bleeding from 2 wounds in the rear, something like that. But the Styx male is NOT bleeding in the few images of him with the buffalo head and hyenas. Too bad Singita couldn't have clarified at the time which male had the bleeding wounds, but it was most likely Nkuhuma.

    @Night Watchmen Interesting that Darkmane had met the Manghenis. The do have some of the right instinct for protecting the remaining cub, and they have vigorously fought off Nkuhuma for probably longer than people recognize, buy they go to far in defending themselves, like headless chickens in a HUGE territory leaving cubs behind even if certain male lions actually didn't kill the cubs directly. Lately, 2 Manghenis have been friendly with the PC males. I hope the pride doesn't go extinct because Tinya/Mfuma and OM's last daughter would deserve a chance!

  • @private4918

    @private4918

    @Night Watchmen I agree that some of those "mothers" probably sort of just abandoned cubs: after fighting with the Nkuhuma male, both BEFORE and after the loss of OM, and ONCE with the invading Ndzenga males, when cubs got separated during the skirmishing, the "mothers" didn't bother turning their dumb heads and looking back to see where the cubs were, and just marched on without them; even without any fighting, the "mothers" probably just didn't look after the cubs well enough, kept wandering here and there, leaving cubs behind. I would say that the Manghenis really are like that, and it's to be expected from Kinky Tail's and Mr. T's daughters. The only adult Mangheni now who seems to really be different, with some brains, is Tinya/Mfuma, despite having a Mangheni mother.
