When we approached lake Masek (Ndutu, Tanzania) we discovered plenty of wildebeest in the mud, some of them already dead. A lioness took their chance, killed a wildebeest at the other edge and afterwards tried to catch a young one right in the middle, that got bravely defended by the adults. They mobilized the last power they had till the cat gave up, struggeling on the soft ground. She walked straight up to our car, was too tired to sort out the hyena that was observing everything, hoping for a meal, but too scared to go after the lucky wildebeests that managed to get out of the misery situation. Unfortunately I couldn't use the original sound as we were just too excited.
The next day we found the place covered with vultures and the smell was terrible. Lots of wildebeest were on the move close by and we saw a young one running around and looking for its mother. It was lost and nothing we could do about it. Three years later we returned and saw bones everywhere, maybe still leftovers from the drama we witnessed. It happened in April 2009 and I never saw something moving like this again.
