As a biology student and zoology enthusiast i have never had any issue with allowing natural selection to take place and observing rather than interacting, however, in this case, considering the dwindling numbers of rhinos left in the world due to unnatural hunting by humans, i would argue it might actually be a better idea to try and preserve individuals such as this one who are not being hunted or sick, but instead are simply trapped. It’s strange that i’m saying this and i know people will attack me in the comments for even suggesting it, but their numbers are just so low and on the decline, it might be time to try and rescue some of them.

Y'know, there's an anti-tank rifle from WW2 which could penetrate some tank armor and kill an elephant in like one shot. But shooting hippos with it? GOOD LUCK. Luis P the elephanths that get killed by lions are typically not close to fullgrown, or sick/old. The reason there is no videos of a lion killing a rhino is probablly because there are so few rhinos left compared to elephants. and you cant even compare an elephant to a hippo and especially not buffalos. I've seen lonely male lions kill fullgrown bufflalos several times. Even saw a shelion do it one time

+james smalling Nice discussion! I agree that there are much less rhinos in the wild, and that certainly influences in this case. But you can find a lot of videos of lions and rhinos interacting in a hunter/prey behavior and I never saw lions winning it. In the case of young/sick/old animals, that's a key factor for lions to hunt all of these big preys we mentioned, except the buffalo, which is a more common prey to the lion, I agree too. But if you consider the particular characteristics of the elephant, hippo and rhino (all of them in the same condition of age/health), I believe that the set of strength, agility and aggression makes the rhino the most difficult to be caught by the lion. Also the dynamics of the self-defense mechanism, makes the rhino more likely to hit and hurt the predator due to the movement of his horn: very close to the ground and then up. In the other hand, the elephant is less likely to hit a much quicker animal with its tusks, the defense would rely in powerful kicks or the attempt of crushing. And for the hippo, his defense of biting is extremely dangerous for the lion, but again it's a slow movement, difficult to hit a lion, then it adopts the "survival mode": crouch to protect itself and try to reach the water as soon as possible.

That rhino was very smart in the situation. He could see the lions were scared of him because of his horn and even while he was stuck he would get closer to the closest lion, knowing they would get scared and back up. Also once out he kept going in circles to make sure he had a clear view of each lion and charged at them to scare them off. All in all he used their own fear against them. Good footage! :D

I love how the lions are trying to help the rhino and then when the rhino finally gets out they all start playing together in celebration. Mammals are such naturally loving and caring creatures that helping other species is routine. ☺

But for the lions turning up, I am not sure the rhino would have had the brains to move away from the area it was stuck in. The longer it stayed there, the worse its predicament became. Ironic that those who came to kill it saved it's life.

2:21 two Lions drinking water showed rhino the exact way to come out of water. Coz lions know how to escape a croc attack in water.

Yeah if they weigh it down to the ground as a group and suffocate it they would then start near the balls! That’s where the skin is softer and they can rip apart from there

Rhino would've made the lions minced meat if it wasn't exhausted from being in the mud.

These were curious adolescents, seeing what they could learn from the situation. They learnt that rhinos were tough customers, not easy meals

Good to see a steady camera person and not hear someone yelling in the background.

At 1:20 the lions be like "Maybe if i just.. nah... fuck it! Your turn"

I love how in the end they just stare at eachother awkwardly like: "Well... you guys cant atack me... i cant atack you... lets forget about this"

I like how that one Lion at 2:44 , jumped off the Rhinos back real quick, once he saw that the Rhino made it out of the mud; and was going to start charging at them.

Great video! The lions wanted to prey on the rhino but they "helped" him to find another way to get out of the mud.

+Jean Chris Good observation. Looks like he was going nowhere until they came along.

Normally, I'm all for the predator in these videos, and the No Human Interference rule, but in this case, I was rooting for the Rhino or for a Jeep to pull up and chase off the lions. The Rhino is just a little too critically endangered to let even one die.

Lions weren't happy at this ending...

So basically the lions saved the rhino. The rhino was stuck in the mud and the lions motivated it to get out of there.

+Vladimir Ceh to be honest, I don't think stating where this is would help at all. But I want to respect my community as that's what they have asked for. I think more good people will know where rhinos are than bad, thus making it harder for the poachers to hide if they were to do anything, but I'm happy not to take that chance.

Did not know that the Rhino's were that mobile, agile and fast! Whoa! Lions wanted no part of that thing once it started waving that tusk around!

There's no way those three "teenage boys" could have killed the rhino, unless it exhausted itself and was already drowning. You can't choke-hold a rhino, nor can you easily pierce its skin while its still alive to resist you.
