    I am relatively new to the hobby. I'm 20 and in college and have been running Lionel since the mid-1990s when I was given a simple 4-4-2 Santa Fe freight set one Christmas. So long as Lionel offers the basic smoking steamers that they have always offered, I don't worry about the crazy prices on these nicer trains. All it took was that 4-4-2 and its short freight with illuminated caboose to get me hooked, and today, I spend an extra couple hundred a month just to have a two bedroom apartment.

    And with that, I can now say that I'm officially a proud owner of the Lionel Vision Line UP Baldwin Centipedes. I found one for sale on Ebay earlier this week and got it for a very attractive price that I couldn't refuse. One of my most desired O gauge locomotives is now officially a part of my collection. Words can't describe how euphoric I'm right now. I will keep this set forever.

  • @tencents49

    Cause whats the point of stereo sound from a locomotive if its in a 3d environment. Unless you want to fill it with speakers that play each individual sound, then a single speaker will do. It gives off a great effect none the less

    Once again, thanks for another great review. It was because of you that I have the Vision Line CP Hybrid. I liked what you said about making innovations . It's like buying a car during it's first model year. Once your work out the kinks, you usually end up with a pretty good product. At least Lionel is trying to stay on the cutting edge. As for having both metal and plastic body engines, my other GEVO is the MTH one. I happen to like them both.

    That is a lot of engine almost 4 feet, the camera definitely doesn't do the size justice, surprised you were able to get the whole thing in frame. It would certainly be magnificent to see this thing in person going down the rails. The moving fans and faint horn sounds are great minor but significant details that add to the realism. I find the Centipede to be very odd and very cool by its size and it not being a very successful engine in real life. I wish Lionel would do more of these weird/obscure engines that are more forlorn and not very mainstream as Vision Line models and bring more attention to them. It's also been awhile since they've made a Vision Line diesel, I would love it if they made a Vision F3 or something like that. Great video Eric!

I agree with you that the sound system is the best feature and believe that it is without a doubt the best sound system ever put into a model engine. Eric, when you said "Postwar engines have maybe a pound or so of pulling power" I started putting weights on the frame of a tender for my postwar 2056...it can pull 15 pounds

  • @DarrellJMartin

    @DarrellJMartin

    3 жыл бұрын

    The pulling force is measured laterally, not by how many pounds are being pulled. That same 15 pd weight would require much more pulling force if it wasn't on wheels, and that could be measured by attaching a pull force measuring device (like a fish weighing scale?) to the weights and seeing how much force is needed to pull them (I'm spit-balling about the fish scale, so maybe someone has a better method).

It's located at the Arizona Railway Museum Chandler AZ. I have been next to this locomotive when running and as I listen I close my eyes and could almost feel the vibrations. I am into HO but love the detail Lionel put in. Wish our locomotives could have running fans.

The pilot models look very nice and since these were so obscure irl I feel like it would look equally out of place either way. Also, since they aren't in any of my favorite schemes, I would want a Milwaukee road one if they made one and I could find the money.

    Did you happen to have a slight issue with your engines when you first got them? When I went to go pick them up from the train shop, I tested them on the test track and got lights, sounds, and smoke, but it wouldn't move forward or reverse. When I got home, I tested them on my own personal test track, and everything worked as it should. A friend of mine in my club bought the Pennsy version new and he had an issue with them. He sent it back to the train shop, which then sent them off to Lionel, who corrected the issue. Apparently, Lionel knew there was a slight problem with these engines but never issued a recall apparently because they did not want to deal with backlash and everyone sending in their engines to Lionel for repair. I'm just curious to find out if yours had the same problem right out of the box.

    Even though they weren’t successful back in the day, the vision of basically a diesel Big boy, is massive; imagine the massive amount of power if you used todays parts and traction motors, with a massive diesel engine, would be immense, be the world’s most powerful locomotive and diesel engine the world, and replace multiple engines together, although if you had the engine generator the length of the engine, you would have to either hook it up to an oil tanker, or make a faux B-Unit that holds the diesel fuel

  • @themanformerlyknownascomme777

    @themanformerlyknownascomme777

    Жыл бұрын

    The engine's legacy is slightly complex, none of it's major failings (aside from the visuals) are it's fault, Baldwin didn't build these on an assembly line but two at a time resulting in maintenance being a hassle, they also chose to use an air throttle, killing off compatability with other engines and mandating an engineer to each cab. In terms of actual performance the engine did everything it was asked for and more. Even today it would be considered a viable option based on specs alone. If Baldwin had built these diesels like diesels and not steam engines it would have been a different story.
