I’m picking up a PRR non powered version tomorrow. I will be the first non-GE “DD” on our fleet roster. Currently we roster 3 U50C’s from MTH, ironically all are 5037, but all 3 are different in their paint as we use them for a show we film. One is factory clean, another is weathered, and the last one is painted in a “what if” Greyhound paint.

Thanks Eric for another great review. I was at one of the hobbyshop vendors today at the WGH Train Show in Chicago. He had a powered U.P. and Milwaukee Road DD35A's for about $539.00 but, I opted for the Santa Fe AC6000 Warbonnet next to it instead for $430.00. Keep up the grat reviews. Lookin forward to that Ice Cold set.

As delivered from EMD, there was no strobe light on the cab roof(they were added in the 1970’s), and all were delivered with Dependable Transportation on the cabs.

UP #72 -- 2011 EMD DD-35A, 2 CAT 3406Bs, Dependable Transportation logo on the cockpit. I'd like to have this unit because I saw it in the 2011 Signature Edition catalog, I believe. The Double Diesel family includes the DDA-40X Centennial, and only the DD-35s are also produced with booster units. Southern Pacific only had the boosters for the Double Diesels, and they make a perfect lashup with the GE U-50s. I also found out that Lionel made these in New York Central Lightning Bolt, PRR Brunswick Green, and Milwaukee Road liveries. Union Pacific owns both the Milwaukee Road and Southern Pacific.

Thank you for an excellent review of this model. According to EMD records there were 15 A units built and 30 B units. EMD originally intended to build only B units and frame them with GP-35 units. I have no photo of UP 72 but I have a photo of UP 72B. It is fairly free of ornamentation just like the Lionel model. EMD records indicate SP did own the DD-35.

I'm sure MTH would've taken the time to research this engines history to get each detail right Lionel just wanted to pull a fast one just to get on the market after them not caring to put it out until year after it as mentioned in the catalog, on the other hand the model sounds great. Excellent review as always Eric

Awesome review Eric!!! It looks like Lionel did a great job on the DD35A, it looks and sounds great, love the horn! By the way, I finally purchased the materials I need to start my bench work, I can't wait to get my trains off the floor! Of course, as usual my timing is impeccable, I finally start my layout and then Woodland Scenics burns to the ground! Oh well, what are you going to do? Anyways, thanks for the awesome review bro and have a great one!!!

I honestly prefer Lionel over MTH , but Lionel's models are pricy, and MTH's have a more affordable price. So if you buy an engine from Lionel, and get the same thing from MTH, it's cheaper but basically the same thing. Lionel and MTH both make a great product

Just some problems with that, the first is I live in a model train store dead zone and the closets is an hour and a half up the motorway in Brisbane, the second is AUD inflation on electronics which puts trains $300-600 more than the USD, if I went online I'd end up with $100+ added post cost. I ended up skipping O Guge and when on to building my own G guage trains. trucks are $10-20 motors are $100-200 and I'm making my own DCC system. every loco I end up building won't cost much over $400 :)
